"Talespin: Fire Down Below".
Any type of literary work is not usually done by one
person. It often takes a group of dedicated people to
keep the writer on track. Usually with their own input, ideas,
suggestions or just plain moral support. I, myself, find myself
gifted by being surrouned constantly by such fine people. :-)
I first met DavidT on a Disney Afternoon NG; on a thread
about Talespin and other ideas about the show. At the same time,
I considered the idea of writing a fanfic involving Talespin.
Considering that the last time I tried to write a fanfic ended in
abject failure, I dared to try again.
I sent the prologue chapter to DavidT via private email. His
response was optomistic and encouraging. And for the next year or
so, he became my unnofficial editor in this project. And he made
sure everything stayed on track and consistant with the
characters we remember. I must confess that whatever virtues this
fanfic has must go to him. Because he deserves it. He made sure
to remind me of where the story must go and where it must be
taken. How the characters act and how they must feel about
something. I'd swear that I would've probabaly left this fanfic
unfinished if it were not for his advice and guidance. So
needless to say, I have a lot to thank and give him credit for.
Of course, all the vices, mistakes and the like that this fanfic
has must be blamed on myself <G>.
Synopsis, in his own words:
The year is 1938 and a remote and frightened Usland has
allowed a brutal and
decaying nativist elite to impose a Nazi-styled occupation on its
outlying
island Settlements. But the colonists have not surrendered to
their new
order...
In my own words: It takes place a time after Cape Susette's invasion of the Pandalas. Usland is a bit paranoid of a future attack. But at the same time, they are also under this conspericy. One that wages war against it's neighboting colonies. Called the Settlements, they are fighting back, veying for their independance and their homes. And our heros are caught in the middle of this conflict. One that, left unresolved, threatens both sides.
Admitingly, I never knew what course this fanfic would take me. Even when I first started working on it. There was never a clear plot, never a clear plan on what might happen or how it might end. All I did know that it'd be a long story, and something that might end big.
There are a lot of themes in this story that I liked. Most of them I never really considered until after the story was finished. Quite a few that David spoke about, taking me by surprised and forcing me into looking at it from a new prospective. I hope that a lot of you will enjoy the story as well. But there are a lot of people I wish to thank:
Colleen: She did the initial spell-checking when I
was hounded down and drowning with my working life. Decyphering
my writings the way an Archeologist had to decypher anchient
writings without a Rosetta Stone <G>.
"Jill", for trying to continue the
spell-checking.
The AML: They're dedication and friendship is enough for
me to keep trying. Dispite the many frustrations I endured, they
were always there to lending a sympathetic shoulder and a ear to
listen.
DavidT: For obvious reasons above. For keeping the story
on track, amoung a whole mess of things :-)
Chapters 1-4 The Prologue and first chapters, in .wps format. Zipped and ready for download.
You're going to have to right-click on the hyperlinks above, into "Open in New Window" or "open..." For some reason, "Save As" doesn't work out too well for some reason.
I'll be adding more chapters overtime, taking the time to proofread and maybe add a few details here and there. The best (and worst) part of doing it this way is that I can't go back to correct it once word gets out that a new chapter is up <G>. All comments are welcomed.
