Octopus
Day 1

Pre-instructional:

TSW name the four major oceans.
TTW ask the students what they know about octopus. (KWL Chart)
TSW sing “The Octopus.”

“The Octopus with eight arms,
You let your ink out so you won’t get harmed.
You can go into holes at the bottom of the sea.
You can changes colors to escape and be free.
Octopus, Octopus you are not neat.
You have lots of arms, but you have no feet.

Procedure 1:

a. TSW will predict what Herman the Helper by Robert Krauss is about.
b. TTW read the story to the class.
c. TSW answer questions about the story.

Procedure 2:

a. TTW show the students a picture of an octopus.
b. TTW tell the students facts about octopus.
c. TSW tell what they have learned.

Procedure 3:
a. TSW discuss how our lives would be different if we had eight arms.
b. TSW tell the pros and cons.
c. TTW list them on the board.
d. TSW make a handprint on a large piece of construction paper.
e. TSW turn their paper upside down, and form an octopus by using the paint to           add three extra fingers.
f. TSW draw details to show how the octopus would use his arms to help          
     someone.
g. TSW and TTW write a sentence about their picture.


Day 2

Pre-instructional:

TSW name the four major oceans.
TSW sing “The Octopus.” (Tune: “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star)

“The Octopus with eight arms,

Procedure 1:

a. TTW reread Herman the Helper by Robert Krauss to the class.
b. TSW answer questions about the story.

Procedure 2:

a. TTW show the students a picture of an octopus.
b. TSW tell facts that they have learned about the octopus.

Procedure 3:
a. TSW discuss the  “H” sound.
b. TTW draw a chart on the board.
c. TSW make a list of names, action words, and objects that begin with a H.

d. TSW make a sentence with a few of these words. (Harry helps the Hippo.)
e. TTW write the sentence on the board.
f. TSW draw a picture of one of the sentences on the board.
