We had to have Tomia put to sleep on January 10, 2007.  It was absolutely heartbreaking.  She was in good health until 16 years, when her kidneys started failing.  Here is her story:

I found Tomia in the newspaper back in 1991, when I was 16 years old.  The ad said “cock-a-poo puppies, $25 donation to Pet Rescue.  My beloved little cock-a-poo had just died a few months earlier and I really wanted another dog.  My dad, mom, Henry, and I all went out to take a look at these puppies.

I have to admit that when I first saw them I was unimpressed.  I was looking for little fluffballs and these  dogs had shorter hair.  They were definitely not cock-a-poos, more like schnauzer/cocker mixes.  But, one of the puppies just kept jumping all over us and she won our hearts. So, we brought her home.

She was such a little pain in the butt, as most puppies are.  But, she learned fast and before long Henry had taught her to sit, shake, lay down, and roll over (eventually she just did them all at once to get the treat faster).

Tomia was SUCH a good dog.  She always wanted to make us happy, and she did for 16 years.  We will always miss her.

JOSIE
We got Josie on March 19, 2005 when she was 8 weeks old.   She is my first pure-bred dog, a miniature schnauzer.  I really could have cared less if we got a pure breed, but Henry really wanted a schnauzer.  My only request was that she be black instead of salt & pepper.  She was jet black as a puppy, but soon turned a beautiful silver (not quite salt and pepper).

Henry didn't want another dog, but I convinced him to go look at the puppies after seeing an ad in the paper.  I really didn't think we'd be getting one of them.  But, once Henry saw Tessa playing with Josie, all of his resistance crumbled.  He caved without much convincing and we picked her up the next day.

Josie took a LONG time to housetrain.  I wouldn't have called her fully housetrained until she was about 1 1/2.  She still chews up things when left alone (at 2 years old).  But, she is really a sweet, loving, little dog and we get a lot of enjoyment out of her.
