Grooming Tips For Your Miniature Horse!

Grooming your Mini is as IMPORTANT as feeding, worming, farrier care and Veterinary care.

If you have ever seen a mini horse just as winter has past and the heat of spring/summer is settling in, then possibly you can understand how HOT a mini can get under ALL THAT HAIR! One solution that many choose in the battle of the FUZZ is to clip the mini's hair down to about 1/4" inch of hair. This is quick and relatively easy as most minis soon learn that the clippers feel pretty good as the air finally hits their skin and they suddenly feel cooler! I am always amazed at how easy it is to clip a mini for the very first time. The down side to Clipping your mini is that the coat will look DULL and lifeless compared to a mini which has been groomed with a curry comb for a rich sleek shiny coat! However MOST people do not have the time or the patience to spend hours a day working that hair off their mini by hand! (Not to mention the aching back and sore arms from all that rubbing!)

Either solution works, it simply depends on the individual owner as to how much time and energy they have!
One suggestion BEFORE clipping is to thoroughly bathe and dry your mini prior to clipping to extend your clipper blades' usefull lifetime!

Regardless of whether you clip or curry the hair off your mini, occasional bathing (I personally bathe my minis twice weekly) greatly helps in the removal of hair. Bathing helps to break free the hair from being matted and snarled with dirt which "pancakes" the hair/dirt onto your mini like glue!

Don't forget about Cleaning out your horses feet! This is important to prevent fungus and foot/hoof rot such as "Thrush" or "white line disease".(Especially in the "WET" areas like here in Florida!)
