Total Solutions to Keep Machines Running Reported by Shigeyasu Tateishi, Komatsu Ltd.
Aiming to Achieve Win-Win Solutions for All Three Parties Komatsu pursues support activities that help customers achieve targeted production volume within their established budgets by guaranteeing specified operating capacity for its machines and reducing total owning and operating (O&O) costs. One tool employed is Komatsu’s service contracts, which are entered into between Komatsu distributors and customers. Komatsu enforces these contracts through the Repair & Maintenance (R&M) Contract for large-sized mining equipment and the Maintenance Contract for medium- and small-sized equipment. Under the platform of “3PM,” or Preventive Maintenance, Predictive Maintenance and Proactive Maintenance, these contracts ensure that the best possible steps are taken before breakdowns occur so that the customer, distributor and Komatsu all come out a winner. Komatsu provides the tools and manuals defining each party’s tasks in order to facilitate accurate implementation. Moreover, Komatsu continues its efforts to acquire more precise information on its partners’ needs and deepens the channels of communication in building a framework that provides immediate remedial measures when problems arise. Ultimately, Komatsu endeavors to help customers expand sales and reduce costs for higher profits. Maintenance Contract for Medium- and Small-sized Equipment Komatsu distributors provide periodic machine maintenance service, as well as replace components that Komatsu is accountable for, within the budget specified in the contract with each customer. Quality service is offered through Komatsu’s extensive distributor network, assuring only experienced, highly trained specialists undertake repair work using only Komatsu components. In addition, data on such defective parts and components are collected for future improvements. (KOMTRAX (*1) must be installed to provide operational management for each piece of customer equipment.) R&M Contract for Large-sized Mining Equipment In addition to the services provided by the Maintenance Contract, the R&M Contract offers a full suite of repair services within the established budgets for optimal machine efficiency. By designing a program tailored to work sites, machine applications and the machines themselves, Komatsu guarantees suitable preventive measures before breakdowns occur so customers can avoid unexpected expenses and enjoy stable and systematic production. Customers are required to introduce VHMS (*2) (Vehicle Health Monitoring System) to take advantage of the “machine health check” and facilitate risk management. VHMS is currently equipped on the HD465-5, HD465-7, HD605-5, HD605-7, HD785-5, HD985-5, PC1250, PC1800, PC4000, WA1200 and 930E, with plans for future expansion.
