What's with the quills?

Hedgehogs have very unique behavior, compared to other small animals. Hedgehogs have a very specialized defense system- their quills. Contradicting common belief, hedgehogs spines do not "shoot" out- in fact, very few are ever lost. Hedgehogs are not related to porcupines, who do lose quills.

Why do hedgehogs lick saliva on their quills?

Hedgehogs have a very strange behavior- self anointing. In this process, stimulated by contact with a foreign sent or flavor, the hedgehog will chew a small amount of the object, while secreting foamy saliva, and lick it onto their coat. To do this, they contort themselves into a strange position, often falling over, and seem to take little note of their surroundings. Hedgehogs will do this with a variety of objects- from caterpillars to grass. Mine once self-annointed with some sort of fungus. Some people mistakenly believe that their hedgehog has rabies. THIS IS NOT TRUE! If you find this too disgusting, just make sure you don't give it to many new foods. However, you can't avoid self-anointing completely.
