FOR APOSTILLING AT THE ALABAMA STATE DEPARTMENT:

The person you will need to see in Montgomery at the secretary of state's office is Sharon Frith. Her phone number is 1 800 274 8683 if you want to call toll free and ask to be transferred to Sharon. Sharon also has a direct number but it is not tollfree. That number is 1 334 242-7207. It is a good idea to call Sharon ahead of time and go over your list of notaries with her just to be sure she has them in her records and their commission is up to date. Make sure Sharon knows when you are coming so she will be there. The apostilles are $5 a document. Her office is in the state capitol builing at Room S-105, 600 Dexter Avenue, Montgomery, AL 36130. To find her office when you get there go up the front steps of the capitol and enter the front door. Take the hallway to the right, the hall of flags. She will be in the main executive office in Room S-105.

TO GET A STATE POLICE CLEARANCE LETTER FROM THE STATE OF ALABAMA:

Call Brenda Thomas at (334)353-4506. This is in Montgomery at the AL Dept. of Public Safety. They will know what you are talking about when you say I need a state police clearance letter to do an international adoption. Be sure and remind them it needs to be on letterhead and notarized on the same day the letter is dated. They have done many of these so they do have a good understanding of how it needs to be done. They may possibly charge you $5 per document and the do not take personal checks. Be sure and ask if there is a charge when you order the letters. If they are going to charge you, they will not send the letters out until you send in a money order.

If you have any problem for any reason, the guy who is in charge of this unit of DPS is James E. Potts. His number is 334 242-4322. You probably won't need him, but just in case you have any problem, he is the boss. He is the one who will actually be signing your letter.
