My Doctoral dissertation aimed at describing the normal variation of the auditory event-related potentials (ERPs) of the newborn infants. The ERPs are evoked by external stimuli and appear as small voltage changes in ongoing brain electric activity, electroencephalogram (EEG).
To use ERP as an evaluative and diagnostic tool in infants, very scrupulous work should be done in collecting the reference database of the ERP responses obtained from healthy full-term infants. This database is needed for comparison with ERP of infants at risk (prematurely born, infants with very low birth weight). We are working in collaboration with neonatologists Vineta Fellman, MD, PhD  from the Hospital for Children and Adolescents, Helsinki (HUCH) and research assistant  Tarja Ilkka. Parents are welcome to follow the study and their approval is necessary. Permission from Helsinki University Hospital Ethical Committee has been gained.
As a whole, this research brings us closer to the goal of treating even the smallest infants as thinking and feeling humans who have highly developed cognitive functions and who possess abilities that are extremely valuable for their future development.
