The day prior to Wings' boarding to Lagos, Nigeria, to record Band On The Run, drummer Denny Seiwell and guitarist Henry McCullough announced they were leaving the band. The sessions produced not only the album songs, but also "Helen Wheels" (released in the US pressings of the album), "Zoo Gang", "B-Side To Seaside" and "Oriental Nightfish". The sessions happened on September 1973.
Some cool information:
*One hot and humid night, Paul fainted on studio. He couldn't breathe, and Linda thought he was having a heart attack. A doctor advised him to reduce smoking and said he was suffering from stress.
* There were many problems during the recordings of Band On The Run. The studio was still under construction, and the place had lots of big bugs which scared the musicians and engineers.
* Paul and Linda were mugged one night by six men armed with knives who were inside a car. They took their jewelry, cameras and money, as well as the demo tapes for several Band On The Run songs. Linda jumped in front of Paul begging for his life ("He's a musician, don't kill him"). Later the police informed them they weren't killed just because they were white and couldn't recognize their agressors.
* Paul was accused of "trying to steal the Nigerian culture", by using the local sound in some tracks. He then called the local music hero, Fela Kuti, to play him some songs and proved the statement was wrong. |
