Stella - The Inspiration Of Wings
Stella Nina Eastman McCartney was born in London's King College Hospital, in September 13th, 1971. Due to some complications, she had to be delivered by caesarean section three weeks premature
(Stella's birth was a risk for her and Linda; both could have died). Paul is barred from the operating theatre and remembers, "I sat next door in my green apron praying like mad...the name Wings just came into my head" (Linda maintained Paul was thinking about "wings of an angel"; according to her, Paul said once he saw a white angel beside Stella's cradle). After the birth, Stella had to be kept on intensive care for a few days.
Since she was a baby, Stella traveled with her sisters and parents during the Wings years, being tutored meanwhile. She developed an interest in fashion when she was 12, and by the age of 15, she was in Paris helping Christian Lacroix prepare for his first couture show. She later enrolled at Central Saint Martins, alma mater to the likes of John Galliano and Alexander McQueen, then began an apprenticeship on Saville Row.
As a teenager, she pieced her own wardrobe together from fleamarket stalls and the vintage boutiques in Kensington High Street. That all changed when she started her own company out of the garage of her parents' London house. She spent three years in the fashion school and earned a BA (Bachelor of Arts) degree.
Stella was appointed chief designer of Chloé in March 1997, and made her debut fashion show in May. For the occasion, Paul wrote a song for her called "Stella May Day". She is now one of the greatest fashion designers in the world, with some famous clients like Madonna, Cameron Diaz and Gwyneth Paltrow.
In 2000, Stella received the Vogue Fashion Award for Designer of the Year.
In the beginning of 2001, Stella left Chloé for the house of Gucci, where she's going to have her own label.
LATEST NEWS: Stella got engaged to her boyfriend Alasdhair Willis. The pair plans to wed next year.
