Candyman This film is based on 'The Forbidden' by Clive Barker, who is better known for his 'Hellraiser' trilogy which he wrote and in the case of the first directed. Bernard Rose actually wrote the screenplay and directed 'Candyman', which was released in 1992. It stars Virginia Madsen and Tony Todd (Wishmaster) who develop a bizzare relationship. The basic storyline is as follows: Madsen is a researcher looking into urban myths with her collegue, Bernadette Walsh. They come across the tale of Candyman, who suppossedly will come and kill you if you say his name five times in a mirror. The doubting Madsen foolishly dares to speak Candymans name five times in front of a mirror and now he is coming for her, but will she give in and 'be his victim'? Despite what alot of people say, for it's time, this is a very good horror film. What makes it especially good is the fact that we go through the first half of the film without seeing Candyman, which helps build up his role, it has you wondering things like, is there really a Candyman or just some crazy people using the ledgend? When Candyman (Tony Todd) does arrive we aren't disapointed, everything about Candyman is mysterious and terrifying. His voice for starters is deep and fearful but at the sametime alluring and hypnotic and the confidence in which he carries himself and his body language and gestures are not just threatening but also very inviting. The way in which Candyman speaks, he speaks very poetically and some of the things he says are so cool, hence why i have a few quotes on this page. The few killing we do see in this film aren't exceptionally gory, we don't get to see Candyman ripping open peoples thoraxes in full detail but the views of the aftermaths (see at the bottom of this page) are satisfying for those of us that need our blood and guts fix. No good horror movie is complete without a good soundtrack and Philip Glass delivers it. The main tune that's used throughout the film is nothing more than a simple childlike tune over broken chords. It's simple and catchy, you'll be whistling it for days after seeing the film and it brings lotsa atmosphere to the film. The fact that it's childlike is appropiate because urban legands are something that parents and adults use to scare children, yet in this film it's the adults who are being warned and scared with tales of monsters. This is a film worth seeing, although some of the storyline is very weak in places, (Candymans reasons for persuing Madsen is one of these weak links). There have been Candyman sequels, Candyman 3 is the most recent, but i haven't seen this. Candyman 2, which i have seen, is nowhere near as good as the first, i only keep it on tape because i like a couple of the killing scenes, apart from that it's a pretty bad movie. |
The story of Candyman: The legend of Candyman dates back to around 1890. Candyman was the son of a slave, who has earned a considerable fortune over the years, because of this Candyman was sent to the best schools and became a well sought after artist. He was commisioned by a wealthy land owner to paint a portrait of his daughter, she and Candyman fell madly in love and she became pregnant. The father wasn't very happy and hired some local hooligans to take vengance upon Candyman. Candyman was chased to area known in the film as Canbrinni green, where his right hand was sawn off with a rusty blade. But this wasn't the end of the torture for poor Candyman. The hooligans went to a nearby bee farm, smashed the hive and stole the honeycomb. They stripped Candyman naked and smeared the homeycomb over his body, after he was stung to death they burnt his body on a huge bonfire and scattered his ashes over Cabrinni green. Just for general interest in the first Candyman film, we only see Cnadyman kill two people! However throughout the film we are told about various other crimes which Candyman suppossedly commited, though one has to wonder whether it was Candyman who killed them or his followers? Which ever it is they are also responsible for the death of Ann-marie Macoys dog, who was be-headed. |
