Michaels Background:
Michael has two sisters, Laurie Strode and Judith Myers.  However Michael killed Judith, he stabbed her to death on halloween night in 1963, when he was only 6 years old.  He was subsequently sent to a mental insitute where Dr. Sam Loomis tried to rehabilate him for 15 years, until Micheal escaped in 1978 and returned to Haddonfield.  Where on halloween night he tried to kill his remaining sister, Laurie, but failed and went on to persue and try to knock her off in at least three of the halloween movies.  Michaels quest appears to be, we can't be sure, to try and rid the world of anything that is of family to him, and the people who get in his way.

How the character of Michael Myers came about:
John Carpenter and Debra Hill, the creators, got the idea of Michael from a serial killer in America who watched people sleep until they woke and saw him, then he'd kill them with a wench.  The mask used in the films is really a mold of William Shatner's face (Captain Kirk from Star Trek), the mold was meant to be used as a prop on a TV show but never was.  An interesting fact about the people who play Michael, even though he was orginally played by Nick Castle (The Fog, Escape From New York - co-wrote screenplay) in the first film, Debra Hill, Tony Moran and another actor played Michael in certain scene, although i don't know which ones.
The sequels that followed
This is a horror movie classics, always has been & always will be, that was the reason i originally saw this film because it's just one of those you have to see.  After i watched it i was amazed, i'd never seen a John Carpenter film before & suddenly i was in love with the man!  I haven't seen all the Halloween sequels, they are difficult to get hold of in the area i live in & they're very rarely shown on tv, i have only seen the first three.  Never the less, Halloween is one of the greatest films i have seen so far.  One of numerous brilliant things about the film is the music, the theme is a masterpiece, the suspense it builds is tremendous & all from a few simple notes.  This is what makes Carpenter a great director (and everything else he does in his films) his simplicity.
The first halloween film, which is my favourite, was released in 1978 & stars Jamie Lee Curtis (Halloween 2 & H20, True Lies) & Donald Pleasance (Halloween 2, Escape from New York).  I won't write anything that will ruin the film for anyone who hasn't seen it, but the basic storyline for Halloween is:  Michael Myers escapes from a mental home and goes on a killing spree in his hometown of Haddonfield, Illinois, USA.  The storyline for the sequels is pretty much the same except for Halloween 3 which has no Michael in it & has no connection with the prior two films whatsoever, it's about a different threat on halloween night.  Out of the three halloween films i've seen the first is still the best, although halloween 2 has a bigger variety of innovative killings.  Do bare in mind when you watch this film, especially if you've watch alot of recent horror movies,  that this is a horror movie classic it's been ripped off alot since 1978 so it may seem cliche but it's not, if you think back to what it must have been like when this first came out you realise what a revolutionary film it is.  Anyways this is a great film in my view, one of the greatest, that scene were Michael comes out of the shadows behind Jamie Lee Curtis, fantosstic!
Don't worry this is one of those on the set not during filming moments.  It isn't like a deleted scene or anything.  Click on Michael below to go to my pages on John Carpenter.

Some quick Halloween movie trivia:

1)  Halloween was actually shot in the spring, so paper leaves were made and scattered around the locations.  But cos of the tight budget they had to be swept up and used again every scene.
2)  Laurie Strode was supposedly named after Carpenters first girlfriend
3)  Halloween was shot for only $300,000
4)  Donald Pleasence agreed to take on the role after persuasion from his daughters, big fans of 'Assault on Precinct 13'
