Kolobos (1991)
'Are you having bad dreams?  Don't be afraid.  Bad dreams aren't real.  Just keep telling yourself that, and the demons will go away' - said by Lucille in the film
This isn't the best horror film in the world, its very much a mixture of every horror film you've ever seen, with many a scene pilfered from prior horror movie classics.  But nevertheless, this is the first film in quite a while to scare me.
Kolobos is written by Nne Ebong, Daniel Liatowitsch and David Todd Ocvirk, a group of unknowns really, the later two also directed it.  The film lasts just under an hour and 30 mins and stars a cast of unknowns really:  Amy Weber plays Kira, Donny Terranova - Tom, Nichole Pelerine - Erica, John Fairly - Gary and Promise LeMarco - Tina.  The basic storyline is these five peeps all respond to an advert in a papers asking for open minded individuals to take part in a film experiment, in which they're to live in a camera filled house togther (all rather Big Brother-esqe).  But as you can guess, what with this being a horror movie and all, things all start to go pear shaped with the activation of numerous deadly booby traps throughout the house.
The first serious killing in this film is near perfect!  The timing, the visual, the execution of it etc., all just fantosstic!  It doesn't come til quite a while into the film, after you've had chance to settle down with the peeps in the house, yet you know something has to happen soon.  You're in a wierd state of relaxed aprehension when you suddenly hear something and large industrial saw blades go flying across your screen so fast your left wondering what the hells happening, is someone hit? Are they dead?  I'll stop there before i start to ruin your viewing pleasure too much, but for those of us that crave a good spilling and sheading of blood, Kolobos certainly provides us with a satisfactory level to satiate our blood cravings.
Theres quite a few nice visual factors in the film that catch your eye and attention.  The main one being the drawings done by one of the house mates, you'll see plenty of them and i find them most intriguing, i wouldn't mind owning a few myself.  The booby traps are brilliant, lovely high-tec and gadgety and the house, Oh my god!  I so want to live there, a pool room, a cool little disco ball that comes out the ceiling, its fabulous!
The soundtrack isn't anything brilliant, its very much your run of the mill stereotypical horror souindtrack with all those staccato, stabbing-esque strings, but it does add to the tension the film creates in places.  It was composed by William Kidd, who has also orchastrated for the films 'Masters of the Universe' and ' Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country'.
The storyline and concept behind this film are really good and a fantosstic job has really been done, but once you hit the end of the film it all seems to collapse upon itself and the more times you watch this film the more evident this problem becomes.  To me it seems the writers were just trying to be too clever and as an ending to this film it just doesn't work, mainly because too much is left unanswered and is just too confusing at the end.  However all this aside its an excellent horror movie, one to watch when you want abit of a brainless scarefest and definately DONT watch it alone!
Kolobos.  It means "mutilated".  Some would say it's what Zeus did when he severed the first creatures who roamed the earth in two, condemning them to wander in search of their better half.  But others believe he created divine beauty, for in severing the beast, he created man and woman.' - words of wisdom or just damn confusing?
