Gabriel Yiu was born and educated in Hong Kong. Before
immigrating to Canada, he was administrator of an arts institution and a
commentator on arts and culture policy. He was awarded a scholarship by
the Asia Cultural Council to go to study in New York and visit cities in the
US. He immigrated to Vancouver in 1991. Together with wife Angela,
he is now owner of a chain of floral retails. He began reporting
and commenting for the Chinese-language media in 1994 and became one of the
hosts of a daily news commentary programme for Fairchild Radio, as well
as a current affairs columnist for Ming Pao. In 1998, he was
invited to become a member of the Community Editorial board of the Vancouver
Sun, and later a freelance opinion columnist. His articles appear in
the Sun regularly. He also writes a column for the weekly publication Business
in Vancouver. His writing crosses cultural boundaries and media; for
that, he received the Cultural Harmony Award from the Vancouver City Council.
In 1999, he won the first runner-up of the Marjorie Nichols Memorial Award
given by the B.C. Newspaper Association for best newspaper columns. In
the same year, he gained first prize in Taiwan's Federation of Overseas
Chinese Association 88th Chinese-language Writing Award (News Commentary
Category). He was featured as one of the "People to Watch" in
a special Vancouver Edition of the Time Magazine in 1997. He is
Chairman of Hong Kong Forum Society and recently elected as director for the
Vancouver Centre for Contemporary Asian Art. Centre A, for short.
