My story
I am Vishwesh Menon, and I am a dyslexic myself. At present I am in the final year of Junior college. As a child I was always curious about gadgets and gizmos. I always wanted to know more about those; then mysterious objects which never seemed to make much sense to me. I would play around with electric motors, trying to put them to use on the cardboard boats or cars I had constructed. Though I never succeeded, the will and desire to create never sublimed. As far back as I can remember, I have always been fascinated by the concept of flight. Today I am an amateur : web designer, cartoonist, animator and aero modeler (Aero modeling - Building and flying radio controlled model aircrafts) and I nurture an ambition of becoming and Aeronautical Designer someday. It all started when I was a wee lad. I was slow from the start, I began to speak only when I was 3and a half yrs old. Till then it was frantic gaa gaas and goog googs, which no one could apprehend. At school too, I was a slow learner. I was and am till today terrible at spelling. I could never spell 'eight' for some reason. This was the case till my mother began to stick flash cards that read 'EIGHT', all over the house. They were everywhere, on the walls, mirrors even under the dinning table where I used to spend time drawing. But mom's evasive action was in vein, so I ended up with a spanking. I was in the 4th standard when we moved back to India. My elder sister and I were enrolled in a reputed C.B.S.E (Central Board of Secondary Education) school, not too far from home. It was here, where my life completely changed. In the 5th standard my scores began to drop. In the 6th and 7th standards, failing in at least 3 subjects in each examination had become a part of my academic performance. I began to fall in the sight of my teachers. I lost all confidence in myself. Somehow I managed to get through to the 8th standard. It was at this point that the school authorities stepped in and asked to meet my parents. My parents were required to take an undertaking, if I were to perform badly in any of the forthcoming examinations I would be detained. Life once again took a drastic turn. My 8th standard class teacher was an angel in disguise. She spotted the fact, that I had difficulty spelling. Though I didn't speak too often in class, she knew there was something different about me. She approached my parents, and informed them about this learning disability 'Dyslexia' she had learned about in a seminar. We were then directed to the MDA (Maharashtra Dyslexic Association). Assessment was carried out and I proved to be Dyslexic, Dyscalculia and Dysgraphic along with having a very high I.Q. . To avail of the provisions provided by the Maharshtra government for Dyslexic students, my parents admitted me to a State board school. It was here where I completed my final year of high school. As a result of my mothers determination I was granted exemption from the third language and half an hour extra in the Board examination. 77.6 % was my board result, which wasn't to bad considering the fact that, I still occasionally screw up while spelling 'eight'. In an Academic oriented society like ours in India, there is no place for the 'slow learner'. But place can be found or created only through awareness. This is the soul purpose of Helplearning.
