Power Of Soul

Power Of Soul presents the first concert of the four legendary Band Of Gypsys concerts at the Filmore East. Recorded at the December 31st, 1969 early show, the band was in fine form. The BOG project was put together with Billy Cox and Buddy Miles coming in to help Jimi record an album which was owed to Capitol Records over a long-standing contract dispute. Jimi also used the Filmore concerts to debut new material he was working on, to see how his fans reacted to it. Most would not make it onto official records, either due to Jimi's untimely death, or Jimi wanting to define the song into a better form and not wanting an inferior version released. Most Hendrix fans would find little to complain about in anything Jimi did musically however. So what we're left with are live recordings, and the occasional studio demos or takes of this new material. And with all apologies to Jimi, it's all fucking great!

For an audience tape, the quality of this is quite good. The crowd tends to keep quiet during songs, which is a blessing. Vocals and music are a bit distant and hollow, but just a little. If you're a fan of the Band Of Gypsys Filmore concerts, this makes for a good addition to completing the set of four Filmore concerts.
