Live In Milwaukee

Live in Milwaukee was recorded February 28th, 1968 in, where else, Milwaukee! The 2 sets, both of which were recorded (and presented here), recently surfaced, and copies of this concert began making their way into the hands of tape collectors.

And what do you get on Live In Milwaukee? A good concert, sure. Another couple of discs for your collection? Yup. But take a look at the first track on disc 2. No, that's not a misprint. That's Bold As Love. The *only* known recorded live performance of Bold As Love. In existance. It's easily the highlight of this set. Beginning the second set, Jimi is tuning his guitar, and starts playing the notes for Bold As Love. Mitch and Noel join in, and they just keep going! It is an instrumental version though, Jimi doesn't sing at all during it. But it's just so cool to hear, and a shame that they didn't put it into their set lists. There's only one problem with this set. Whoever recorded it, had the recording levels set too high. So the music tends to distort once it gets loud. Let this be a lesson to you all you wanna-be concert tapers. Keep the mic levels down. In case you didn't know, a concert is loud :)

Good to great performances during this concert; Red House, as always, kicks serious ass and along with Bold As Love, are the standout tracks. I'm Your Hoochie Coochie Man unfortunately gets the ending of it cut off, probably due to the tape running out. There's also good versions of The Wind Cries Mary, Stone Free, Manic Depression, Purple Haze, all the normal set favorites along with a couple of lesser played tracks.

Quality for an audience recording I'd rate as average. It sounds as though the recording levels were set a little too high. Quieter sections of songs sound fine, louder sections begin saturating. Sounds like the bass is the main culprit. A few notches down on the mic input would have turned a good recorded concert into an excellent concert. But overall, this is a decent set, and the rarity of the Bold As Love track makes this a must have for the Hendrix fanatic.
