The BBC Sessions

The BBC Sessions, featuring probably some of the Experience's most fun and exciting performances, came out finally (was supposed to be out nearly 2 months ago, but was pushed back). Was it worth the wait? You betcha!! Featuring the complete Radio One CD, plus an additional 13 previously unavailable tracks, this is a must have for your collection, even if you already have Radio One. And for those of you who have Radio One, you know the great performances you can expect on this release.

And if you are a Radio One owner already, you'll notice that the person in charge of it's release, Alan Douglas, yet again hacked and slashed his way through what I thought was a complete CD. The Radio One jingle, was edited by almost half, songs were missing opening notes, etc. This release corrects all this and more. The previously issued songs sound better than before, the new songs are great, including two in which Jimi and Noel jam with Stevie Wonder sitting in on drums (yes *that* Stevie Wonder), a couple alternate versions of the kickass Driving South, and what is probably the nicest treat, Jimi's infamous Lulu Show performances. Jimi plays a great version of Voodoo Child (Slight Return), and then Lulu (a variety show host in the 60's) introduces Jimi and the band. She goes on to say how it was Hey Joe that made the band big, and how they're gonna play it now. Jimi and the band play an extended jam intro to the song before finally coming in with the well known song. The producers of the show were growing aggitated until they heard Hey Joe begin. However, Jimi had other intentions, interrupting the song midway to give a small tribute to the band Cream, who had just broken up. The band then break into a small section of Sunshine Of Your Love, ignoring the floor manager's sign to stop playing. This would lead to the banning of the Experience from BBC television! Unbeleivable! A (yet another!) fantastic package from Experience Hendrix, it's amazing the quality of the music that you see when people truly care about it and the listeners, and not the money involved.
