Albert II is the second son of King Leopold III and Queen Astrid. He was born in Brussels and educated in Geneva and Brussels. During World War II (1939-1945) he and his family were deported to Germany. He entered the Belgian military in 1953 and served with the navy. In 1959 he married the Italian princess Donna Paola Ruffodi Calabria. He has been a member of the nation's senate, president of the Belgian Red Cross, and a member of the International Olympic Committee. After the death of his brother, King Boudewijn, Albert acceded to the throne on August 9, 1993.
