Although I was born in North Dakota, I spent most of my "childhood" in Dillon, Montana where the livestock outnumbed people! Having spent 8 years in the Bitterroot Valley I was determined to get out and see the world. I'd always wanted to be a pilot in the military which ironically led me to the fifth and least known Federal Service Academy. Located in Kings Point, New York the United States Merchant Marine Academy was only a 20 minute train ride from Manhattan. Needless to say, the Big Apple offered many unique experiences for a small town boy like myself! The Academy curriculum required us to sail onboard commerical and Naval ships for a total of 365 days. During this year, I literally travelled all over the world. I graduated four years later with a BS in Logistics, Intermodal Transportation, and a United States Coast Guard Third Mates' License. This license allows me to sail onboard any US flag merchant ship as the third deck officer in charge of Navigation. An interesting fact about the USMMA is that you can graduate and get commisioned into any of the armed services you wish. I had intended on joining the Air Force upon graduation but the Illinois ANG offered me a flight spot and commitment that I couldn't refuse. Therefore, once receiving my wings I'll be stationed at Scott AFB, IL flying KC-135's. It may seem like I followed the scenic route to achieve my goal, but if I had the chance to do it over - nothing would change. |
