[Guen]
Stalling that last of her string of mares, the tall desert girl looked longingly at the Inn proper.
*What I'd give for a drink of that
cool fruit juice they serve.*
But the lightness of her pocket sang a different tune.Tomorrow she would be full of pocket. The mares she'd brought were all highly trained and none could ride as well as she , to show their paces to the buyers.
It was hard for the golden skinned girl. Blue eyes glazed as she
thought of the past.Raised as the pampered daughter of a warlord, it
was a desperate strait she 'd landed in since the destruction of the
Hold. Lord Jarg made sure he had killed every male of the Line and
ravished her just for the joy of her humiliation.
Bitter now, Gueny had made a name as a trader and trainer of War steeds.Only
occasionally did the hard shell waver.
Right now the thought of a hot
bath and soft bed made her resolve to survive alone weaken.
Turning her face to the soft smell of Hai'nn's neck she breathed
deep.
*I can do this*
She wrapped herself in her warm cloak and curled
across the stall entrance. Too many men had made the mistake of trying
for her horses. After the first few came minus body parts, the rest
left her and hers alone.A soft nose nuzzled up against her neck-the
great sight hound Raza curled against her and they both fell asleep,
the hound longer than the girl as they slept.
[Kara]
Kara wished she had a horse to ride.
The trail to Mondfort
was longer and harder than she thought. She was hot, tired and her
feet hurt. Sitting down by a rock, and taking her boots off she
pored rocks out onto the ground .
" And once I find a good ,strong
horse, I am going to buy a better pair of boots. Turning, she hears
something in the bushes. Reaching for her staff, she pulls herself up
and waits for whoever or what ever is coming. The bushes move and then
a large black wolf jumps out and stands with his teeth showing. Kara
was startled for a moment, then she saw why the wolf was growling.
Near the rock she was sitting on, layed a stone snake. They were
called stone snakes because their skin looked like stone. They could
hide until thier pray got close enought to strike. They were very
poisonous, and could kill a horse with one bite.
Taking the staff, she placed the end under the snakes body and threw it into the woods. What she did not see was when she touched the staff to the snake, it
turned into real stone and broke when it hit the ground.
Looking back
at the wolf, she said "Thank you Rolf. If it was not for you I might
have been bitten." Sitting back down , she placed the boot back on and
started on her way.
" It is a good thing we found this staff Rolf. It
has came in handy." The wolf looked up at her and waged his tail, his
gray eyes shining.
Over the rise Kara could make out the town. " Well it looks like we
are about there Rolf, so it should not be long now. "Reaching into her
back pack , she found her cloak and placed it over her head. The cloak was made of fine cloth. It hung down to her feet. Her small 5'3"
frame was almost to small for the cloak , but she managed. Walking
down at a faster pace, she found herself near the front gates. She
heard Rolf growl when the dayguard walked up to her, and asked......
[Day guard]
Well, what have we here. A fine young lass with a wolf. Now what brings you here to Mondfort. No good I wager", looking down at the staff. Are you a mage?
[Kara]
" A mage? No, I am not a mage, tho I do have a little power.
Want to see?" Looking up, and seeing the guard step back in fright.
Looking in his eyes, she could see what he saw. He saw a skull with
two flaming red eyes and a white toothy grin.Laughing, she walked
threw the gates with Rolf.
" God I love doing that", and speaking a
few words , the illusion disappears, showing a beautiful young lady
with green eyes and a cute nose. Her ears showed that she was an elf,
but she knew she was only half-elf. Her mother was true elf, while
her father was human. Her mother knew a few good spells, and Kara picked them up rather quick.
Looking around, she asked a few people
where the best place to eat and get a good room. They all pointed to
the Dragons-inn. Thanking them, she headed over there and spotted a
group of mares that were in a the stables. Finding a small boy
sleeping in the hay loft, she asked who they belong too. The boy
yawned and stretched , then pointed to the dark skinned girl that was
sleeping with a strange looking hound.
" I would be careful how you
wake her up. She has been known to take a few hands and fingers from
the last guy that tried", the boy said and then went back to sleep.
Walking over to the dark skinned woman, she tried to think of a way to wake her. Before he had the chance to do any thing, Rolf walked up to
her and started licking her face. " Rolf, quit that!" * I am only
seeing if she might taste good* and he kept on licking her............
[OCC]
Rolf is a timber wolf, and can talk with telapath . So far he only talks to me.. He is harmless, unless he is prevoked....
[OCC/ Raza]
Raza is lean and built much as a racing hound for speed, with a great
long head and large brown eyes .
Given to Guen as a puppy , she has
been her sole companion the last years. Grown now to the point where
she can gaze in the eyes of a tall man if she raises on hind legs, her
long fur is silken soft and gleams chesnut in firelight. Though not a
telepath, she manages to get her messages across-quite well!
[Guen]
Waking to a warm tongue in the ear, Guen rolled over to swat at
Raza-when she heard a deep growling laugh-She looked directly into the
face of a timber wolf-a grinning timber wolf. Raza stirred behind
her-looked at the wolf , at Guen and sat , lolling her long tongue
out, as if she too were laughing. Beyond she saw a small woman with
elven ears. The horses showed no agitation which made her relax-Hai'nn
usually had good judgement.
"Greetings!"
Careful not move , she smiled at the stranger. "Would
you ask your friend here to let me up?-nature calls-rapidly"
[Kara]
Watching Rolf licking the young, dark skinned girl and seeing her swat
the strange looking hound.
" Rolf , I said quit that, you are going to
get us in trouble." About the time she said that the young girl woke
up with a start. Rolf growled-laughed, at her, then set back and
looked over at the hound with a strange look in his eyes.
" Do not
even think about it. You have no time for that right now" and lightly
kicked him.
* Well I was thinking that you should at least introduce
me to her, It would be a proper thing to do*
Laughing, Kara stepped
back and said, " I am sorry about Rolf here, but as you can see, he
has no manners. I am sorry, this is Rolf, my friend and companion, and
I am called Kara, Kara Stonewing."
She watch the young lady eye her
then Rolf. Then she heard the girl say "Greetings!Would you ask your
friend here to let me up?-nature calls-rapidly".
" Oh, I am sorry.
Rolf , step back and let the young lady up.
* She didnt taste to bad. I
think next time I will take a bite instead of licking her first*
"ROLF!! Behave yourself," and she blushed .......
[Gueny]
Tending to her needs , Guen re-entered the stable. Squatting with her
back against a wall, she introduced herself-" I am Guenyvere, a trainer
of
War steeds. These are my companions, Raza-, and Hai'nn, my stallion. You
friend Rolf must have an--ahh -interesting history to be traveling with a
halfelf-you pardon, Miss-hope I didn't offend?"
Turning to Raza, she
said" I
filled the water fresh in the yard , if you'd like some." The lean
sight
hound moved slowly toward the entrance , looking over her shoulder at the
wolf.
" Don't have any klah, but there's a good herb tisane here, if you'd
care to share?" Sending a raised eyebrow at the half-elven girl , she used
a
heat globe to boil a small pot of water on the stone hearth in the
corner.
Guen knew the look-this one needed a horse- and badly from her body
stance.
She settled back as the heat globe started the water boiling.
*I truly
could
use a good meal now-I bargain better from a full stomach*
Knowing she
could
get this one to pay, she started her spiel."Have you tried the meals here
at
the Inn , yet?"She asked, casually. No indications of her hunger on the
surface. With a full stomach she could ride better , show the schooling
that
she had worked months to put on the mares, show them off better. So this
became part of her sale plan. A meal. A BIG meal.
[Kara]
Smiling and watching Rolf following the hound over to the water,
Kara walked over to where Guen was boiling a small pot of water.
" No
offense taken Guenyvere . I have been called a lot worse than that.
You know, I was thinking. The Dragons inn is just up the street. Why
don't we go there and have something nice and hot to eat. What people
have told me, they have great food and the best drinks around. There
we can sit down and relax and I can try to talk you into selling me
one of your horses, and please, Miss is so formal. Call me Kara,
for it sounds better between to ladies than 'Miss'. If you are not
offended, I would like to by the meal and drinks. Who knows , I might
get you drunk and get a great buy for one of your horses, and I will
even let you pick her out". Kara Laughs, and her silver blue ponytail
flashed back and forth across her sholders. Turning and walking out of
he stable, She whistled for Rolf. " Now where did that wolf go".....
[OCC]
Well it looks like wolf has wandered off..Hope he stays out of trouble..I well tell you our story when we get to the inn.. :)
Remember that somewhere in the shadows is the one that was sent to watch over you ...to be with you... you just haven't seen them yet...but soon they will walk out of the shadow to say they have always been there with you..watching over you...
[Guen]
[Kara]
Kara waited while Gueny made sure that the stable-boy knew what to
do, and where she would be. Looking around for Rolf, Kara made her
way, following behind Guen, and headed towards the Dragons-inn.
Kara smiled and then bowed her head. " It was a long time ago. I
can still remember my father telling me ,when I brought Rolf home,
"You can not keep a Wolf as a pet. They are wild animals." I tried to
explain that he was only a pup, that his parants were killed by
hunters, but he said "No, and that is that. I was young then, only
four seasons old , and I did not know why he wanted me to let him go.
I could not say -Wolf- to well, so I said Rolf, and the name stuck".
[ OCC] well thats my story... your turn!!!
[Guen]
Allowing the woman time to gather herself, Guen then laid a gentle
hand
on her arm.She felt a warmth from Rolf in her mind. Withdrawing the
hand,
she ventured-"Turn about is fair play, Kara."
[Kara]
Feeling Guen's hand on her made her feel better. She smiled back and
waited for her story. It sounded about as bad as hers.
[OCC]
I thought my story was bad.. WOW.. And
what about Kaza?? I need to know about her..so does Rolf..
BTW.. where is Diego ??
[OCC]
Raza was given to Guen as a pup-the sight hounds were extremely
valuable -they are from the north wastelands-ice and
tundra -Telepath?-growing into it, I think.It probably wasn't developed
due
to Guen's abilities being blocked by the trauma. Which awakening is a
"coming event" I think- but back to Raza-They are thinking , vicious and
loyal to one only-they also bond for life , once emotions are invested
with
a mate. Raza was a gift-Guen got her shortly before her world fell apart,
and as with all traumatic things , some of her memory around it is
gone.Their hounds were a partner , rather than a servant, as your Rolf
seems
to be.Long -lived, they reach upwards of 100 years, before age begins to
weaken their incredible strength.
[Guen]
Looking around , Guen turned her attention back to Kara. returning
the
smile, she said "Many thanks, Kara. Hugh , you did well by us, that's one
of
my favorite rooms." Mulling over their conversation, she added "Kara,
you've
given me a lot to think about. "
[Kirjath]
He wasn't drunk, but he wished he was.
[Guen]
Settling back to enjoy her drink, there was sudden crash. Following the
glares of other patrons, she noticed a disheveled man, with wild black hair.
Reaching out, she could sense an overwhelming dispair.
[Kara]
[Kirjath]
The voice of a stranger entered his world. It brought him back to
the
present. He looked at the girl before him. "Kirjath," he said
hollowly
due to his parched throat. He brushed a hand over his face as
though
removing imaginary cobwebs. He leaned back and sat straight on the
chair,
hung
down slack around his face but the rest of his hair was tied loosely
into
a
ponytail that reached down a little past the shoulders. Blood-shot
brown
eyes gazed out at her with a sincerity of heart. Aquiline nose led
down
to
a thin-lipped mouth that was parched. A leather hide vest covered
his
torso but it didn't hide the big black and red tattoo of a stylized
bear
encircled by a ring of runes. This tattoo lay in the center of the
man's
chest. His skin was tanned and darkened, the sign of a person who
lived
his days out in the open. He carried no weapon on him, but it was
obvious
from his strong build that he could put up a fight unarmed.
[Guen]
Taking in the pain in this one, Guenn made a decision.
"Kirjath, I'm a terrible, managing woman. Come to our table, and
we'll
find you a meal. Then , perhaps you would share a little of you story
with
us-" Guen caught Kara's movement out of the corner of her eye, and
nodded
toward their table.
"We have plenty. And have walked in your shoes, believe me."
[Kara]
Before she had the chance to hear his reply, she heard Rolf getting up
and stretching.* I am finished with my bone and we are going to head
out to the stables to watch the horses.* With a big yawn , and a smack
of his lips, he turned and looked at Raza. She was still nibbling on
her bone, so he started without her.
[Guen]
Kara rejoined them, and Guen watched as the stranger, Kirjath and Kara
chatted as he ate. She noticed the restraint he used to keep from wolfing
(sorry, Rolf!) it down. Just as he finished , they heard cries of pain
and
horrendous shouts of anger! Looking across the table at Kara , Guen landed
on
on her feet in a dead run. [Kara]
Kara sat back down at the table and started talking to kirjath while he was eating. he was trying to mind his manners , but she could tell he had not eaten very well the past few days.As the young Warrior demolished the food , she was about to ask him something when she heard Rolf say*Kara, you better get out here and bring Guen with you! We have troulble out here and they smell bad. I think they are dead.* [Kirjath] The scene before him was something out of a nightmare. "The living dead,"Kirjath whispered to himself. He saw Kara and Rolf facing off a band of the monsters. With axe inhand now, Kirjath threw it at the closest ghoul. He saw the axe imbed itself into the creatures backand the force of the impact took the creature down to the ground. Wthout a weapon, Kirjath charged one of the ghouls and took it by surprise. they both went down in a mass of flailinf arms and legs. [Guen] Wading her way out of a stinking mass of undead flesh, hands that kept crawling after being lopped off, Guen heard Kara cry out "aim for thier heads! That's the most weakest part!" With the reflexes that had saved her on previous occasions, the tall girl took her great sword in both hands and proceeded to decapitate anything in reach. As the stable filled with noxious dust, she saw the newecomer go down under a pile of the things. She went after them, managing to reduce the mob to a number he would be able to handle. Several blades had grazed her, but none deep enough to stop her. Turning , shifting the great sword from hand to hand, she stood braced, looking around for Kara. [Kara] Kara saw Kirjath go down, with one of the ghouls going down with him, so she yelled"Take his head offf, that's the only way to kill them!" Out of the corner of her eye she saw one trying to sneak up on her.Taking the staff and sticking it in the ground, she puuled herself up and over, kicking the ghoul just under the chin. the ghouls head snapped back and he fell, turning to dust.she watched as others ran , with rolf close behind them.Turning, she saw the one that was trying to ride the horse, go dwon and get trampled on.She watched as one of the horses bbbrought it's hooves down oin the ghouls head and she heard a loud"Crack!" , then dust rose up from the ground. Dusting herself off, she calls for Rolf. [Rolf] *I can never have any fun> Anyway , they tasted bad. Like chewing on dirt. I am still trying to get the taste out of my mouth. I can't wait to get back to the Inn. A good taste of resh water sounds good right now. A bite of bone sounds great too. Maybe I should ask Sara to put a little meat with it too. I wonder if Raza left her bone behind?* [Kara] "Gods, you are spoiled." Shaking her head, they headed back to the Inn. The stable became quiet once more, and Kara knew that if Guen were in trouble, she would be yelling by now. Looking around for Kirjath and not seeing him, she stepped back in and asked Hugh for adrink. [OCC] "Brain Freeze":Crushed Ice, Ice Cream, Fruit Juice. Like aSmoothey, only colder than ice. Like drinking "Dry Ice".... [Kara] "Ohhhhh...What on earth do you call this, Hugh?it tastes great, but by the Goads ,it is so cold." Hugh just stood there, with his hands on the bar and tears falling from his eyes. His face was red, his cheeks were puffed out like a chipmunk, and he was trying not to laugh. Spitting ut a "S..S..Sorry", he finally let go with ahuge belly laugh. Pointing at her, he said"if you could have seen the look on your face when you took that drink..." and fell on the floor. Sara walked up, and looked over the bar at Hugh rolling around. Smiling she asked "did you make another "Brain Freeze again? You know , one of these days, someone will not like you laughing at them, and they are going to make you drink the whole glass at once." [OCC] Did hugh slip on some marbles? There are a few rolling around the threads! Be careful...they could be anywhere LOL. [OCC]Marbles-I don't see any marbles, do you see marbles? Nah, i don't see marbles, I just-aarrgghhhhh!!!!!Splat! Kerthunk! @#$%^&*&^^$#@!!!!!! [Guen] Setting the Elf child down, she gave a hand signal to raz-"Youngling, Raz will keep you company a moment. I want to be sure none of these horses are hurt."
[Kara]
Kara waited by the fire, sipping her brain freeze, trying not to get
any more headaches. "Wow, these things are powerful" She said, while
shaking her head.
[Guen]
Guen leveled the woman with a steady gaze. "Kara," she drawled " Tho
down right attractive, if I walked on three legs. " Big grin smeared
across her face , the horse trader laughed aloud. Then her face
sobered.
[Kara]
Kara laughed when Guen explained what she meant about Mounting. She
took another drink of her brain freeze, and watched Raza sneaking down
from Guen's room, and laid down by her feet. She thought " The young
elf boy must be sleeping, that's why she came back down. She is making
sure Guen is all right.
[Rolf]
Looking into Razzes eyes, he said "If you like, you can share my bone
withme. Sara made sure that there was some meat on it this time. I am
only doing
this is because..well..ah..I ate your bone you left behind. Why are
you looking at me that way? It was just laying there.......
[OCC]
Raza must have felt her pain ,because she let out a mournful howl, and
Rolfpiped in as well.
[kara]
" I would be honored to have one of the mares,
But I can not just take her. I know how much trouble it took to
capture and break these Mares. I will pay an "offering" for our trip.
This well help us gather the supplies we will need for the quest that
we are about to take".
" That should teach him", and looked around for a tack or tape to
place the note on the board. Not finding any, she licks the back of
the note, and slaps it in the middle of the board. Turning and
stumbling back to the table, after almost falling over Rolf, she
catches herself and plops in the chair.
[Rolf]
"Hey!! watch where you place those big feet. Gee, can't a guy chew on
bone without getting stepped on around here"?
[Raza]
After howling in response to the grief in her lady's heart, Raza turned
her attention back to Rolf. She glided over there, towering over him ,
as he made excuses about her bone. Rumbling in her chest, she snapped
up the proffered replacement, with a deliberate cold shoulder. Rolf
caught her eyes again , and her temper softened. *IF YOU don't snore.*
brushing his face with her plumed tail, she settled in to work on the
bone. *Actually--* she speculated to herself.
[Guen ]
Smiling to herself at the pluck the little woman displayed, she
took a pillow off the hearth and put it under the woman's head. *Rolf,
You and Raz , look out for her.*
[Kara]
" No.. no mom, I dont want to go to school". Kara felt the shaking of
someone and in her dream state, she thought it was her mom. With a
sudden shock, she woke with a start."NO!! she yelled and threw up her
arms, almost knocking Guen down. The glass went flying over Guen and
into the fireplace. With fuzzy eyes she looked around the inn.
[Rolf]
The way it looks, I am going to take you up on your offer , and no, I
do not snore. I might ask you the same question, but I will be a
gracious and not ask someone
as beautiful as you.
[OCC]
[Raza]
*Wolves!* Looking at the big Alpha sideways-she takes inventory-*Well,
takes about 2 days for the "hor"mones to kick in-but he is very
enticing-mmm*
[Guen]
[At a nearby stream]
Blood poured out profusely out of several wounds on
the arms of Kirjath. His left arm was quickly becoming
numb. Bending down by the stream, he undid a small
pouch tied to his belt with his good arm. He poured
its contents, dried herbs of a reddish color, onto
some wet dirt and mixed them with his fingers into a
soft clay. This done, he began to put the clay onto
the wounds on his arms, wincing in pain. In the span
of a few moments, feeling began to return to his
numbed left arm.
[After a good nights sleep]
Morning light struck Guens face. Waking instantly, a habit that
most desert people had, she saw that Sara had already collected the
Elf child.
[Kara]
Kara woke with a startled look on her face. Her mouth felt like
cotton was stuffed down it . She had a bad headache and her eyes were
blood shot. Throwing the covers off, she sat up in bed and almost fell
over. " Please, quit making the room move so fast". standing up was
not that easy. Looking around, she sees a small bowl with a pitcher
full of water. stumbling over to the bowl, she pores a little water in
the bowl. Placing the pitcher down, she takes both hands, cups
them, and brings the water to her face. The cold water hits her face
and she shivers." Damn, that waters cold, but it feels better than
before. I need a good hot bath . A good soak in a big tub with bubbles
and beads full of perfume so I can smell better than Rolf".
[Rolf]
"Now you look alot better". Taking his nose, he sniffs her around the
leg." You smell a lot better too", and he laughs. "Would it be to much
to ask , but why are you running around with a towel wrapped around
you? And why is your hair wet? Did you get caught in a rain storm in
your room? Where was I all night? Hmm..... Well lets say I was with
Raza , watching the star.... stables and the horses. Why? Were you
worried about me? You could hardly get up the stairs last night. I had
to carry your pack , and pull off your boots. You were felling no
pain last night", and he turned and started to head back down to the
lobby. Turning, Rolf said " I am going to get a little breakfast . I
will see you down there IF you can find some clothes".
[Kara]
"Smell better huh. Well you just wait my little furry friend.
You will get your turn later. Lets see if Raza likes the smell of
roses on you".Looking in her back pack, she found a nice pair of jeans
and a soft white shirt. Looking deeper, she brings out a black vest
with silver buttons and a white pair of socks. "Damn thing, still no
boots" and she digs even deeper. "Well , it looks like I am going to
have to walk down stares with just my socks on."
Putting it on, she noticed that it only had enough button to go
halfway up. It was V cut and very tight around her small waist.
Throwing the vest on made it look better, but the vest was cut in a V
shape as well. Looking in the mirror, she said "Boy do I look good.
Now all I need is a nice pair of boots".
[Leather smith]
Kara. Sara has sent this boy over to repair your boots. I am sorry
to inform you that they are to far gone. He has left and came back,
telling me now that Sara wants him to pick out the best I have. What
you see, is the best I have in the shop. If you do not like the cut,
or anything about the boots, please follow the boy, and I will fix
them up while you wait. The price I have on them are twelve steel. If
that is to much, send the boy back with them, and I will do my
best to find you a pair, at a cheaper price. Thank you.
The leather smith.
[Kara]
Wow only twelve steel for these"? Taking the boys hand, she spun
around the room , all the while holding onto the boy. "Weeeee, this is
great. Oh, I am sorry". Letting go of the boys hand , she reaches in
her coin bag, and pulls out twelve steel coins. Looking up at the boy,
she pulls out a five more steel coins and places the twelve coins on
one hand and closes his fingers around them." Now do not lose any of
those, and tell the Leather smith Thank You". The boy was about
to run out of the room, when Kara stopped him. "Hey, I think you are
forgetting something". the boy turns with a puzzled look and says "
Miss? I don't understand. You have the boots. What did I forget"?
Taking the five silver coins, she placed them in his other hand and
closed his fingers around them. "This is for your trouble", and she
smiled. The boy slowly opened his hands an started counting one..
two.... three.. four.. FIVE.. Five silver?? For me? Kara
laughed and said Yes, for you and you only. Now get, before the smithy
thinks you ran away with his boots". She watched as the young boy
placed the coins in his pocket, and ran out the door.
[Guen]
Looking at the bathed version of Kara, Guen realized she would be
fending the men off right and left as they traveled. With a mental sigh ,
she offered *Yes. Told Sara we'd be fairly hungry. " With a mental slap on
her hand , she added " She makes a great Pork Fat Gravy for her biscuits."Watching Kara 's green shade deepen slightly, she supreesed a grin.
[Tigra] "Two miles . By the gods , I can't wait". Pulling her cap tightly over her head, she starts to run. Her skin started getting cooler, and things started to look like a blur around her. "Ahhh it feels great to run again . It has been so long". [Doug- Sargent at Arms] Doug stood by the gates leading into Montfort, when he sees a long figure running up fast . "Halt!! You must stop before you are able to enter Montfort". He watches as the figure gets closer and stops in front of him. Looking up, with a sparkle in her green eyes and a smile. He hears her say in a soft voice " Hello Doug". [Doug],p> "Tigra? Is that really you? My God , How long has it been since you were here last? God, your just as beautiful as the last time I saw you. Do you remember the last time you were here ? It took almost half the garasson to hold you down and throw you in jail. Ahh those were the days. I hope that we do not have to do that again. I am getting to old for that any more. Tell me, what brings you to Montort? [Tigra] Smiling up at the guard that stopped her, she said "Hello Doug. Yes , its me. It has been close to eleven years since I was here last. I see that they have made you a Master Sargent. Its about time they saw talent . I always thought the council was blind". [ Day Guard] " Wow Doug , who in the hell was that. She`s beautiful. Did you get a look at that tail ? I bet shes a beast in bed! I would love to take a ball of string to her.... [Doug] Turning to walk back to his post, he heard one of the lesser guards say something about taking a ball of string to her. Reaching out, and taking the guard by his throat , Doug starts to squeeze the breath out of him. "You listen, and you listen good, you Son of a Bitch. IF I ever hear you say anything...anything bad about her , I will personly take you out in the woods and strip every bit of skin off of your hide and let the ants eat you alive. That young lady has seen more battles, fought more wars, than you,or your kids grandkids will ever see. She is to be respected around here", and throwing him down, he look at the rest of the guards that came close to watch what was going on. " And that goes for the rest of you. Her name is Tigra..Tigra Swift, and If I was you, I would remember that name" . [Tigra] It was not hard to find the inn. A few things had changed over the years, but the Inn looked the same as it did so many years ago. Walking up , she felt the wooden door with her hand . "Hello there girl. It looks like I am home once again". The sound from the Inn made her feel alive again. Glasses being hit together, people talking all at once, the smell of Hugh's wife's cooking lingering in the air. It brought back so meny memories. [Guen] Once back at the Inn,Guen unloaded the parcels she had picked up at the market. Maps and scrolls covered the table, rolling to the floor. She made a production of picking them up and securing them. Raz sent *Not planning on keeping this a secret are you?* [Raza] *Think about it Little One. You have a Wolf* this with a definite grin , Raz continued*a Hound , a striking Woman and at least one Man-Is this CAT agood idea?* [Guen] *You're right, Razmataz, as always. we really do NOT need contention on this trip.* [Raza] Giving Guen an extremely annoyed look,Raz strolled outsidde looking for Rolf. Stopping in the stable yard to visit Hai'nn a minute, she stretched and thought*Last night -ahh - that was worth the Time. I wonder where that Dog is now?* [Guen] *Now if Kara will just get back we can review this route. I would like to know what Kirjath knows of the area, too. I hope that he is faring well.* Guen was beginning to worry that the warrior might have been more damaged than he seemed. [Tigra Swift] Walking up to the bar,she asked Hugh who the young girl was, studying the maps. "Well , that's Guen ,the Desert girl. I know her quite well. About every Season she brings in a group of mares to the market to sell to the very best buyers. She will only sell to a buyer that she knows will take care of her horses. I can tell you this, she had a strange second sight , when it comes to the buyers. Why, I have seen a buyer outbid everyone in the market for one of her mares. She took one look at him and refused the bid.". [Guen] Leaning back in her chair , with a welcoming grin, Guen spoke-"Tigra, I am glad to have you join us. Hugh spoke well of you." Setting forward over the maps again, guen told the catgirl a little of Kara and Kirjath. [Kirjath] Kirjath walked into the Inn with bits of hay still clinging to his clothes.Recognizing Guen amdst the pile of maps, he walked up to her and the catgirl. "Um,hello. I'm glad to find you safe and unscathed from last night's attack. " [Tigra] "Well, hello there. i am called Tigra. tigra Swift, and you must be Kirjath. It is nice to meet you." Taking a drink f*om her ale, she let her green eyes look Kirjath up and down. "Not bad , for a human* she thought and sat back down, all the while letting her tail dance. "A fight? And I was not here to help...so is life..." [Sandanamous] Outside the Dragon's Inn, one of it's name-sake landed, sillouetted by the sun, which was presently balancing on the tip of a distant mountain, as the day waned. Fanning broad, five-fingered wings, sixty feet from tip-to-tip, with cream membranes, the creature kicked up quite a bit of dust. Freezing for a moment, in an unconcious pose, one might almost of mistaken it for a statue. The horse like head narrowed down to a sleek snout, tipped between the arched nostrile ridges with a short , cream colored rhino style horn. The tips of a pair of fangs protruded from beneath the creatures' lips. The were only one of two white places on the whole beast. Back in the space between it's eye ridges, the row of cream colored one-to-two foot long spine-spikes began, and followed the length of the beast , down it's long supple neck, over broad back, to a few feet past it's tail base.
[Kara]
Kara watched as Guen put her horses threw the paces. She
looked around and saw so meny shops, so many buyers. There were people
everywhere , selling, buying or just shopping. Kara had never been to
a festival before, and there were so meny things to see and do. There were street preformers, dancers, firebreathers, and all type of small
booths. Some were selling food, while others were seling fine cloth,
or jewlery . A few were selling weapons that were told to carry
magical powers, but after a few were sold, and found to be fake, the
people were ran out of town.
[Tigra]
Wiping ale off of her fur, Tigra stood up and said " Hi there Kara. I am called Tigra..Tigra Swift. You must be Guens companion.
This must be Rolf. Guen was right when she said that he was quite
a handsome wolf. Guen has asked me to join your little group. With
nothing else to do, I thought I might follow you, and see what kind of
trouble we can get into. It sounds like fun". [Kara]
Well it is very nice to meet you Tigra. It looks like we are gathering
ourselfs a good group".
[Rolf]
" Did you hear Tigra called me? Handsum. She thinks I am Handsum.
Raz has never said that to me.Cute , yes, but never handsum. By the
way.Where is Raz? I think I wil go out and look for her. See if she
needs any company" . With that thought, Rolf started to walk out when
he all most bumped into a golden skinned young boy walking into the
inn.
[Guen]
"Kirjath! you're all right!"
[Kara]
Kara watches as Guen welcomes Kirjath back to the group. Sipping on
her fruit
juice
she looks at the young man as he introduces him self to the Group. He
never
spoke his name , but he looked to be from the desert as well. "A
warrior? He
looks to young to have been a warrior for very long. No scars, his
stance is a
little off, and he looks to be a little frightened by the group", she
thought.
[Guen]
The company was gathered at last. Guen looked around at their faces. It
stuck her that this would become her family over the next Seasons, until
they either destroyed Jarg, or he killed them. Not willing to speculate on
those odds, Guen cleared her throat.
And so she made a beginning:
Guenyvere's mother called her to sit beside her on the window seat.Drawing
her up in an embrace, she began: "Dearest, I want to you to understand about
your father's friend, Lord Jarg. You know that once he and your father, Lady
Melana and I were best of friends. Jarg has changed, dear, and I want you to
understand some of what has happened. " Joanna, Guen's mother began softly
speaking.
Tears started to fall down Guens cheek ." Are you alright"?, Kara asked.
Looking up, she shook her head "yes", wiping away the tears, she cleared her
throat and said "Sorry". Then she went on....
One night , he finally turned on Reen, drawing his sword on his friend.
Reen disarmed him and dumped him in the horse trough. The episode made him
realize he couldn't reach Jarg now. After Reen left, Jarg's life feel apart.
The once great mind began to twist-always looking for a way to defeat death.
He spent months seeking out wizards, sorcerer's and mighty mages, following
obsure clues to gain any knowledge. Then , as the King's spring Call to Arms
went out, Jarg appeared again,
seemingly normal. The Sword Brothers did not renew their friendship, however.
Taking a drink of ale that Hugh brought to the group, Guen took a
deep
drink, and wiping her mouth with the back of her hand, she went on.
"Autumn council drew all the great Lords and their families to Court.
Taking advantage of the opportunity, Jarg spent hours convincing all and a
sundry that he had reformed. He became his old gay, charming self. He even
made overtures of friendship to Reen, who remainded politely distant. With a voice choked in emotion, Guen
tried to continue. stepping outside herself and the memories , she went on, as
an outsider telling the tale:
Little was heard of Jarg , as life went blithely on at WaReen Hold. The
twins were sprouting their first beards-Joanna could now keep Gueny in skirts
for a short while, rather in her brother's hand - me - down hunting gear and
year old Ranald was bravely venturing from bench to bench on his
own.
Guen took a deep breath and looked around the group. They were sitting,
standing there holding on to every word she said. She felt like it was someone
else telling her tale as she spoke once more. Small bumps ran up her arm and
down her leg, making her shiver.
" Do you not think I did a most excellent job of acting, My Lord?'" He
Taunted Reen. "Even You believed me!" With a scornful laugh, Jarg walked over
to Reen. "Now, my "friend" you will spend tonight paying for my humiliation."
Rocler handed Jarg his great sword. "Now, the pain begins ."
Jarg stood before me. Tipping my chin with a hand, as I tried to fight, he
told the men "Take her upstairs." He stood looking at Reen a moment. "Do you
hurt yet , Reen? It's not yet over.I will have my pleasure, then my men will
have theirs here, where you
can watch!" Heartless laughter hung in the air as he went slowly up the
stairs. Reen heard no sound, until a sudden sharp scream rent the air.
Guen shook, sitting at the table. Deathly cold, even with the heat from the
fire, she struggled to go on. Kara saw her shake and taking her robe off, she
threw it over her shoulders.
Hours later, Gueny lying in a bloody heap on the floor-her father's bonds
cut deep into his arms and throat, Jarg , saitieted finally, spoke."I will
not kill her , Reen. She can earn her way as only tarnished goods can. The
pride of your Great House is done , my friend. But your time, is finally at an
end." He signalled to his men to take Gueny out. Lighting a brand from the
fire , Jarg walked aroung the hall, igniting any thing that would burn. Walking away, Jard said "And so goodnite my friend."
Reen said nothing, only fixed golden eyes on Jarg as he left.
Guen's words stopped . The voice of a Bard left her, and her body
slumped over the table. Her head buryed in her arms that were crossed on
the
table.Everyone could tell she was crying, but no one moved. A few tears
were
wipped away, a few prayers were said under someones breath. Some looked
away, afraid that they might say something wrong. A few held their
breath,
while white nuckles could be seen holding the hilts and staffs tightly.
Not a glass was lifted, nor a sound was made, until Guen lifted her
head.................
[Kara]
Kara sat there listening to what Guen had to say. It was heart
breaking to hear about the things she went through, but she had to tell
the group, to make them understand why she was seeking revenge.
[Tigra]
Not wanting to be outdone, Tigra places her hand-paw on top of
Karas, and Said " I too will follow you, until I am no longer needed
or my fate meets me eye to eye."
[Sandanamous]
He had listened, heart and soul, to her story. Too many people,
creatures, -beings-, had he known, that had went through the same horrid
things. Finally, he was being given a chance to do something about it.
[Kirjath]
Out of the mire of confusion, purpose knocked on Kirjath.
[Guen]
Warmth washed through Guen at the intensity of the Oath the Fellowship
had taken. Standing , she slid the Sword of her once Great House from it's
worn sheath on her back. Holding it to the light that caused the ancient
hilt to gleam and send forth sparkles of gems, she spoke , in slow and
solomn cadence. ON TO "SEEKING REVENGE"
© 1997 herbhome@jasper.yournet.com
Walking into the inn, Kara was a bit taken back by it all . Looking
around, she saw all types of people. Some like her , while others
were
a bit hard to explain. She followed Guen to a table by a very large
fireplace. Sitting down , she heard a "yip" at the doorway and saw a
group of people trying to keep Raza from coming in .
" Brave people",
Kara thought, and wondered if Rolf was close behind. Watching the
WHOOPS her, or her reputation for not backing down". Guen came back with
Raza
after talking to the barkeep.
She smiled and looked past the people
to
see if Rolf was there , but he wasnt. Sending out a mental-voice ,
She
said " Rolf, where are you this time? I have told you before that you
can get in trouble if I am not with you. Remember the last time you
snuck away?" And then she waited.
The bar maid came up and asked
" What will it be today ladies? Everything we have here is good, but
I
would stay away from the gruel", and gave a litle wink and a soft
smile.
" I am sara, and I will take your order and return in a bit.
Would you like to get a drink first, or will you order the meal"
Remembering what her mother told her about the desert people,
she said " If it will be no trouble, I would like some fresh fruit
juice for me and my friend , and a plate of your best meat and sweet
bread . Oh, and if you have it, a bowl of fruit to go along with the
meal. What ever is in season is alright, If thats is ok with you
Guenyvere?"
About that time, she
Looking up at Sara, she
added
" And two large boars bones,if you have any?" Sara smiled and winked.
"I think I will be able to fill that order. I will return with your
drinks, and then I will place your order", and she left.
Turning to
Guen, she said " Rolf is outside waiting for the door to open. He is
going to sneak in", and she laughed. Turning , she heard Guen say
"Now, tell me your story-and Rolf's-I am MOST curious about that
one-it was almost as if he spoke."
Looking around the room , she saw Rolf sneaking in, and hid under the
table. reaching down and scratching one of his ears, she went back to
telling her tale. " I kept him out in and old shed that was out back,
and fed him scraps left over from the table. It always seemed that my
mother made more food that we could ever eat. She would keep all the
bones and place them by the back door. They would alway be gone the
next morning. I did not know until I was seven seasons old, that my
mother was feeding Rolf too. Even my farther made sure he was fed
when
I was out with my schooling, or doing chores. They both loved him, as
much as they loved me."
Turning away, and wiping a tear away, she
went
on. " One night , they came. We did not know why they came or who
they
were. My father hid me in the shed with Rolf, telling him to protect
me no matter what. I watched him kiss me, and then Rolf.
After
closing the door, I heard him run back into the house. I heard the
horses first, then the men yelling. At first I thought they were
celebrating something, but when I looked through a crack in the door,
I saw that they were holding torches. One yelled out " Human, and an
elf. why dont you breed with your own kind". My farther ran up and
tried to pull the man off, but the man had a sword , and he ran my
farther threw, and then kicked him to the side. Rolf tried to pull
away from me, to try and save him, but he stopped and looked into my
eyes. He said * Turn away Kara, for you do not need to see this.*
That
was the first time he -spoke- to me. I was shocked at first, But then
I heard my mother scream. I closed my eyes tight, and covered my
ears,
trying to keep from hearing the screams and the laughter". Rolf
placed
his head on Kara`s lap and looked up.
* Do you wish to go on?*
Looking
down, she smiled a weak smile, and thought * Yes, I think it is time.
I have held this back for to long.*
Looking up, she went on. " I woke
up to the horses galloping away, and saw something red between the
cracks in the door. slowly opening the door, I felt the heat and
tasted the smoke. They had set my home on fire, and placed my dad in
with my mom. I tried to run in to try and save them, but Rolf kept me
back". He kept saying to me that there was nothing I or he could do".
I fell asleep and awoke the next day . We have been walking around
ever since".
Tears fell and Rolf started to whine. Kara looked around the
room
and saw no one paying any mind to her crying. Reaching in her back
pack, she pulled out a small piece of cloth and blew her nose and
wiped her eyes. The staff she was carrying was standing straight up,
as if it was stuck to the floor.
Sara brought over the drinks, and
asked " Are you alright my dear? Is there anything I can get you"?
Looking up , Kara said " No, thank you Sara, I was just telling
Guenyvere a sad story, thats all", and took a big drink of the juice.
The drink calmed her down a bit, and she saw Sara place two very
large
bones below the table, and then she said "Your welcome Rolf and
Raza",
and went to gather the rest of the meal. With a surprized look on her
face, Kara said to Rolf *Did you thank Sara?* and scratched his ear
once more.
* Well I was being polite, and how was I to know she could
hear me.* And he went back to chewing on his bone. Sara brought back a large plate , full of meat, cheeses and sweetbread.Reaching down, Kara took out a small blue bag and dropped three steel coins on the table.
" Is that enough for the meal? I have more if need be". Taking the
coins, Sara smiled and said " Yes that is more than enought. Thank
you", And off she went to serve another table.
As for this staff that seems to have a mind of its own, I found it
to the south of here. We were walking through a deep forest, and
found
it sticking out of the ground. It was standing by a skelaton that had
long since been dead. All that was left , was the staff and this back
pack. I did not think he, or she would need it, so I ahhh, borrowed
it
for the time being. It is a strange back pack tho, being what ever I
need, it is always in there".
Looking down at her boots, she
commented,
"Anything but boots", and kicked the back pack lightly. Then reaching
for the meat and bread, she started to make a sandwich . "Please dig
in, because I am very hungry and I might eat it all. Oh, I hope you
do
not mind ordering, but since I am paying for it, I thought I would
order something I like", And she laughed .............
Wearily , she lifted
a
glass to look at the firelight through the sweet juice.
" My story is similar. My sire was a Warlord in the northern desert
lands. While engaged in battle he crossed his Lord-Jarg. The mighty
Jarg.
Father didn't feel it was necessary to wipe out all life in an area,
just
because a troop of soldiers had challenged them and lost. Jarg had no
choice
Passing a hand over her eyes the girl continued. "The following
Winter,
after Father had sent the soldiers home to their families, Jarg
attacked.
He
came in the dead of night, entering by treachery-as a FRIEND. He
decimated
our Line, killing all my brothers, even year old Ranald. He-" with a
deep
breath, she went on-" He smashed Ranald's head in against the wall. He
turned his soldiers loose on the younger boys and cut my two older
brothers
to pieces a part at a time while I watched. Then he turned to me. Thank
the
Gods that my Mother had died first He ...Enjoyed
my
humilation-throwing me out, tarnished goods, into the dead of winter.
It's
not an easy world on the High Desert at any time, but the Steppes in
the
dead of winter-well, they can kill. I survived. I snuck back and stole
Hai'nn back and two of the best mares. I have made my own way ever
since.
Jarg will die by my hand in due time."
With a smile that bode evil for Jarg, she shook her head to empty
the
memories.
"But for what purpose do you enter Montfort.?"
At least she
did not see what they did to her mother. Rolf would not let her, and
in a way she was glad. But the pain was still there and it hurt her to
her soul. Reaching out and touching her hand , she saw her shake her
head, trying to remove the memories.
" It doesn't help Gueny. Nothing
helps but to see the one`s head, hanging from a pole".
Kara took
another bit of her sandwitch and looked into Guenys eyes. She could
see the hurt, and touching her hand she could feel it as well. She saw
everything that Gueny said, from the raiders killing her brothers, to
the things they did to her. She saw Jargs face, and heard his evil
laugh. The laugh was older, but she knew that laugh well. It was the
same laugh she heard when her parents died.Pulling her hand back ,
like she was shocked by the touch of her skin, she looked away and
into the fire.
"Could it be the same person that killed my parants?
Why could I see what she told? Something is not right", she thought
and started to get up. Thats when she -heard- Rolf.
* It was not you,
Kara. It was me looking into her. Somehow you are able to -channel-
my thoughts when I do that. I am sorry, but I had to know.*
Kara sat
back down and looked at Gueny. "Sorry, I thought I saw someone I
knew". It was a lie, but a small one. She did not want Gueny to know
that Rolf was able to do that. At least not right now.
She took a sip
of her drink, and heard Gueny say "But for what purpose do you enter
Montfort.?" Placing the drink back on the table , she said " Well for
one thing , I need a new pair of boots, or have these repaired. Second
thing is I need a good, strong, and fast horse. I am tired of
walking", and she laughs again. bringing her foot up and nipping Rolfs ear, she turns her boot up and looks at the bottom of her boot. There
in the center of her boot, was a very large hole, and she could see
her socks sticking out and thread bare.
" It looks like I need some
socks as well", and sticks her finger in the hole.
* Hey, watch where
you throw that big foot around. You almost took my head off.* Rolf
-spoke- and went back to chewing on what was left of his bone.
With a wink of her green eyes, Kara said " As I said before, I am
looking for a good horse and I am willing to pay a good price for her"
and shook her little blue bag that was full of coins."I hope that the horse comes with a saddle and bridle? Bit-less if you please. I hate
to see a horse harmed that way. I will pay extra if I have too. ".
I have been meaning to ask you, where did you find Raza ??
She is a strange breed of dog. I have never seen one like her before.
Is she Telepathic like Rolf"?
Rolf looks up from his now eaten bone,
and looks over at Raza . He watches her nibbling on the bone that Sara
gave her and his mouth started to water. Edging over to Raza , he
started to take a bit out of her bone. Kara looked down in time to see
Rolf jumping back from the bone. Looking over to Raza, she could see
her giving him a strange look.
,br> Shaking her head Kara said * are you
afraid of a little dog ?* Rolf looked up and said * I was only trying
to be friendly, and did you see that look she gave me?* Kara laughed
and scratched his ear, * I told you to behave , now didn't I ?* about
that time Sara came by and dropped another bone by Rolf. While walking
away, she said " You better listen to her. I have seen that look on
Raza before, and It was not nice", and she laughed and went behind the
bar. Kara looked at Sara and saw her wink . " Well it is nice to have
a friend in a strange place, she said and looked at Gueny.
" Do you
think we should turn in before it gets to late? If you like I can send
Rolf out to watch over the mares. He will let me know if there is any
trouble".
Standing up, she walked over to the bar. " Excuse me sir,
but would you have a room for the night . I need one that has a
window, that faces the stables, and one that faces the forest. Hugh
looks up from wiping a glass, and smiles. " Please,Sir is to formal. I
am called Hugh around here. Sir makes me feel old", and he smiles up
at her. "Let me look and see what I have left". Walking to the back
room, Kara has the chance to look around. She sees all Kinds of
pictures on the wall. One of hugh, one of Sara, and one of a beautiful
young girl. She heard a little giggle, and turning, saw no one close
enought for her to hear the giggle. Hugh came back with two keys
in his hand, and said " I have two rooms like you asked for. This key
goes to the door with two dragons on the door. The other key is for
the door that has a Shield on it. The shield faces the forest, and the
other faces the stables". Thanking Hugh, she reaches in the bag, then
asks "How much for one night ? I think that is all we need it for".
Hugh looked at her , then over at Gueny. " For one night , it should
cost you both about three sparrows".
Looking in her bag, she brought
out six coins and threw them on the bar. " This should do, and thank
you Hugh for the rooms". Walking back to the table, she layed one key
infront of Gueny, and said The door that has a shield on it faces the
stables. Mine faces the forest. I will take the room out of the price
of the horse", and laughed.........
" Looking at Raza , she waved her
hand-Raz-wil you and Rolf watch Hai'n and the mares? Rolf, my advice is
not
to tease the mares. Hai'nn is as edgy as I am"With a smile at the two
large
beasts, she looked back at Kara.
"Kara, I think I'll stay for a night cap-I'm not quite ready to settle
down yet. There's a sense that someone is in need , too. Is Rolf picking
up
on it?"
Calling Sara over , she asked for a small glass of elder blossom wine.
"You , Kara?"
Leaning her chair against the corner by the great fireplace
she settled in to watch the crowd. To herself she thought *If I make the
sale tomorrow, this is the year. I will hunt down the Lord Jarg, and tear
his world down around his ears!* Brooding, she watched the guests as they
ate and drank.
At least while drunk, he wouldn't
be able to remember his failure. His people had depended on him to bring
help from the towns and castles. He had enlisted the help of adventurers
and returned home only to find that there was no home anymore. Only
corpses and burned tents had welcomed him. Any survivors had been
scattered to the four winds.
Now Kirjath sat at a table by himself, contemplating his options. Unkempt
black hair hung down in front of his face hiding blood-shot brown eyes.
Moments passed. Suddenly, in a fit of rage and despair, Kirjath lifted his
fist high and pounded down hard on the wooden table. Some patrons nearby
looked at him with sour looks on their faces, but quickly returned to their
own business and conversations. Blood began to ooze slowly out of his
fist, but Kirjath paid no heed to his hand. For the first time in his
life, he was truly alone without a people and deserted by his god.
*Another.If not Jarg,
then one like him has wounded the Spirit of this one, too.*
Inhaling deeply, she stood, then wove her way to that table. Pulling out
a chair she straddled it, tossing black hair out of her eyes."I am called
Guen" the desert girl said in a soothing voice."And you?" She sent as much
compassion his way as she could. Making sure it read as compassion, not
pity.
"I have a feeling that you have need of a friend at this
moment.Sometimes it's easier to talk to a stranger , than ones we are close
to."
Guen immediately realized that she had touched a nerve..*He's lost
family, then.Gods-how many more of us are there?*
Looking up she saw Kara-lifting a hand she signed for her to join them
" I think she was only kidding Rolf, but I think you should behave.
Now remember, if anything goes wrong tonight, do not be afraid to to
wake me, and if you can, wake Gueny as well. Now go and watch her
horses like she asked".
* Can I finish my bone first?*
"Yes but hurry
up.By the gods I think you are spoiled". Looking up at Guen , Kara
asks " Are you ready to head up to the rooms?" and looked to see where
the stairs lead to.
"Kara, I think I'll stay for a night cap-I'm not quite ready to
settle down yet. There's a sense that someone is in need, too. Is Rolf
picking up on it?" Rolf ears picked up when she asked that and started
looking around the room.
* For what I can sence, there are a lot of
people in need, for one thing or another. There is one thats stronger,
but I can not cut him/her out of the crowd. If we were out in the
open, it would be easier. Sorry..*
Calling Sara over, Guen asked for
a small glass of elder blossom wine. "You, Kara?" Looking back at
Guen , Kara said "Well I have never tried it, but if you like it, it
can not be that bad . Sara , we will take two glasses of your best".
"Thank you ladies. I will have your drinks out in a bit",Sara said and
went back to the bar. Thinking about what Guen said about someone in
need , she looked about the room. Sara brought back the wine and told
her that the coins she gave earlier was enought to cover the drinks,
and then she was gone.
Reaching for the glass, and starting to put
her lips to the glass , she heard a sudden crash. Startled, she almost
spilled the wine on her shirt. She saw Rolf stand, with his back hairs
standing straight up. A low growl came from him , and she reached
under the table to hold him still- It is ok Rolf- looking over to
where the noise came from - It is someone that is upset , nothing
more. She started to get up , but Guen was already up and walking to
the strangers table
" She must be brave to just pull up a chair and
start talking to him. Kara could not hear what Guen was saying, but>she saw and felt the sadness in the strangers soul. She was about to
ask Rolf to look and see what he could find out , when she saw Guen,
waving her hand , motioning her to come over to the strangers table.
Taking the staff in one hand and both drinks in the other, she made
her way to the strangers table. Dropping the drinks on the table and
letting the staff stand where she stopped, she said "Hello, I am Kara
Stonewing, and I guess you have meet Gueny?
This is..." looking around the room and seeing Rolf still under the
other table finishing his bone and watching Kaza with one eye.
Well I was going to introduce Rolf, but it seems he has MORE
important things to do at the moment". Shaking her head and sitting
down, she took a sip of the wine and asked the dark haired stranger
" And you are...........
Kirjath
didn't
know how to respond to Guen. There were no more kinsmen, so
everyone
a
stranger to him. He swallowed back some saliva.
"I'm sorry that I disturbed you with my behavior... I've damaged
this
table." He looked down at the crack and splinters on the wood where
his
fist had landed on the table. The blood was still oozing out slowly
from
his fist where the splinters had rent the skin.
"I've no home and no kinsmen." He didn't know why he said this to
the
girl, and yet she already seemed to know.
Face
grim ,
the Wareen girl controlled her fury . Anger and bitterness were not
what
the
man needed at this point!
*Later. I will yet have vengence on Jarg and
all
his kind.*
Sara was quickly making her way toward Guen and Kara. "Sara, bring
Kirjath? here a stout meal and a pitcher of cold juice-he seems
parched.
In an aside, she murmured"Sara, I'll have to pay you from my sales
tomorrow.
You know I wouldn't ask for myself, but you can see---?"

"Of course , young Kirjath!' Sara beamed out her special
smile-"We'll
have you a full plate in no time. Now, sit you down and listen to the
Lady
Guen, she's a true Healer!" With that parting shot Sara bustled off.
Guen
growled after her.
Pouring a glass of juice for the weary man, she handed it to him.
"Now
rest, eat and all will come to pass, in time."
Kara got up and taking her glass
with her, she went over to the door and opened it for him. " Now
remember, if anything happens, call me before you get into any
trouble".
walking back to the table, she sees that they have moved
back by the fire place. Taking her drink back to the table, she grabs
the staff and walks over to their table. She sees that Sara has
brought more food for the stranger. That was good, he looked like he
needed a good meal. Sitting back down , she waits.........
* Raza! Rolf! Are you all right? What in gods
name
is happenening?" the women covered the short few blaocks in record time.
Almost bowled down by figures running from the stable and paddock , Guen heard Hai'nn in full Battle mode. Thunderous snorts and neighing , the
crash
of heavy hooves on the rails and walls -screams echoing. Then too, Raza
was
baying for all she was worth! Rounding the corner she saw...
Guen must have heard all the noise that was going on, because she bolted out the door and was headed for the stables. Kara reached for her staff and followed right behind her.
Running as fast as she could , she caught up with gueny adn was almost knocked down by two strange looking creatures that were flying through the air, after being kicked by one of the horse
At first Kara thought they were gully dwarves, but the smell from them almost made her sick. Taking a good look at them , she saw men in old raggedy clothes that were gray. The color had bled out of the cloth years ago. Their skin was brownish colored and it looked to be mummified. She could see every bone , the skin was drawn so tight across it. The beings face was drawn in, and she saw that they had no eyes, yet they could see. What was left of their hair was stuck in places all over their skull. She turned intime to see one of them running toward her with a very large sword.
Standing at a stance , she ducked, and brought the staff up and over her head. Just as the Ghoul was about to run his sword through her,she pivoted and brought the staff down on it's arm, breaking it off at the shoulder. Turning as the ghoul passed her, she noticed thatit did not scream , or even yellout in opain. "They are Undead." she yelled over at Guen and Rolf.
"Someone has sent them for the horse."
She saw Rolf take a bite out iof one of the ghouls leg and watch it fall.It was trying to get a good swing at Rolf, but he was staying away from the blade. Kara ran toward the stables in time to see one of the horses kicking a ghoul in the chest. It fell back , looked down at the hole that had once been it's chest adn got back up and tried to ride one of the horses.
"Rolf, try to keep them away from the gate. if they get that open, we will lose the whole herd!" She yelled and doged another one. "Where are they all coming from?"Kara said and looked to see where guen went.
She heard Hai'nn snorting and saw boards in the stable being blown apart by the beasts hooves. Reaching the gate along with rolf, she kept them away by swinging the staff. At first they were just standing there , testing the staff. One or two of them tried to get close, but Rolf kept them at bay.
Finally, the ghouls started to come at her , two or three at a time.Kara was able to keep them from reaching the stable, but the one trying to ride the horse inside was giving her trouble. All the other horses were trying to get away and were slamming intooo the fence and the gate. She was not sure how long the fence and the gate would hold.A few of the boards were already splintering from the hooves slamming into them. Striking out at one that got too close, she took his head off and watched in amazement as the ghoul dropped and turned to dust. Yelling a t Guen, and hoping she would hear her, she yelled, "Aim for thier heads! That is the most weakest part!" and she hoped that Gueny had heard her.
Suddenly she heard a whimper from within the stable. Running for it she heard soft sobs from behind a pile of feed sacks. there was a small elf child hidden-curled up tight in a ball, sobbing fearfully inot Raz's silky side.
Gently she knelt in front of the child. "come out , little one, they are gone now, -we are here." it took much coaxing to get him to release his death grip on Raza.It took much coaxing but finally the small being was cuddled in the crook of her arm.
"They-they- foloowed me! I tried to hide, but they found me again!" the child sobbed. Guen wrapped the small elf in a horse blanket and carried it outside, Sword in the other hand and Raz at her heels. Looking at Raza, she saw dust around the great hound's muzzle. "Looks like you figured out how to take a head or two, mutt!" She grinned at the dog. "let's see where Kara and Kirjath are.Have you seen Rolf?"
Hai'nn suddenly let out a loud snort.
"Yes, My Hero! I know how well you did ! You saved this child's life. you are worthy of the great name you bear!" Hai'nn calmed a little as Guen continued talking in a soft voice, calming both the great war stallion and the frightened child, while she walked toward the corral to see to the mares. "Kara?" It seemed quiet. all the animals were accounted for, and save for minor things were unharmed.
"Hugh, if it's no trouble, could you pour me something ice cold and sweet? Nothing with alcohol, if you please. I need to get this-this-Dust out of my throat." She did not want to say dead skin. Hugh smiled and went in back. She heard a strange sound in back, like something was being crushed very fine. Looking around she saw more people enjoying the Inn. Some were playing a game of cards , while others were throwing darts. The table they were seated at before was stillopen. Turning in time, she saw Hugh bringing out atall glass filled with what looked to be crushed, red and blue ice. Taking the glass from Hugh, she took a big drink before Hugh could say antything.
Sara said"If you drink it slow, it will not be so bad",then winked and walked away. Kara took the glass and walkedover to the table.she felt chilled and the fireplace was starting to warm her up.She felt tired after the fight and thought about going to bed,but she wanted to wait untiol guen and kirjath came back. Sara had alreadylaid another bone under the table, and Rolf was already working on it.Next to him was a large bowl of fresh water , which was half empty. T here were drops of water all around the bowl, so she knew Rolf had found it while hugh was having his fun. Sitting back with two feet of the chair off the floor, she sipped her brain Freeze and waitied...
Hai'nn gently stepped around the child and followed Guen into the corral. Waking slowly from horse to horse , the golden skinned girl ran hands over legs, smoothing terrified feelings and in general making sure that none were hurt and all were comforted.
LeavingHai'nn with them for the night, she moved to the corral gate. Leaning on it, she glanced at the Elf. He was talking to Raz!Small balck head against large chesnut skull. Talking! no fear. *this gets more and more curious.* Moving on through the gate , she picked the boy up again and headed for the Inn.
Shehad seen Kara nd Rolf go on ahead, but there was stillno signof Kirjath.
*He'll be along, Guen. I believe he belongs with us.*Raza said in one ofher rare sendings. "True, he has much work to do, though." Dropping her freehand too the head of her great compnaion,Guen went into the Inn.
Kara, as seemed to be her gift, was extremely comfortable by the fire, with one of hugh's infamous Brain Freezes in her hand.Chortling, Gune wondered if kara knew thw results of a few of those. Signalling Sara toi take the boy and get him cleaned up and settled in, she sank gratefully into a chair, propping her long legs on the fender, letting the fire draw the numbness out of her cold feet. They sat quietly for a while letting the adrenilin calm out.
Finally Guen stirred. "Thanks, Kara." She smiled at the other woman. "between the three of us, withour companions , we seem to have handled that pretty well. Kirjath knew what he was doing, too. He's been through a few fights in his lifetime!"
Sara interrrupted just then, "Guen ,I gave that child abath and settled him on a pallet in you r room. He was out like a light as soon as Raz laid down by him." Stratled Guen realized that Raza had followed sara when she took the boy upstairs.
"Thak you , sara, I knew you could comfort him well." As teh barmaid moved off, Guen hestitantly turned to Kara, "Kara , you did me a great service tonight. I would have you accept one of the mares as a token of my thanks. You may chose in the morning before the sale."Gazing into the firelight, she added "If you are to be a part of my fellowship, you will need to be well mounted." Smiling to herself , she waited to see Kara's reaction. It wasn't qiute what she expected!
She heard the sound of the Inn's door open and turned
to see Guen carrying a small bundle of what looked to be a small elf with black hair.
Raza was right beside her , making sure that the boy was alright. Guen signed
Sara to take the boy to her room and Kara watched as Guen sat down and took a deep breath.
" She must have had a time with ghouls, and the boy", she thought. She watched Sara take the boy upstairs
with Raza close behind.Guen spoke for a moment and then
Kara, in surprise ,heard Guen say "Kara, you did me a great service tonight. I would have you
accept one of the mares as a token of my thanks. You may choose in the
morning before the sale." Gazing in the fire, she said "If you are to
be a part of my Fellowship, you will need to be well mounted.
Kara looked at her like she was crazy. She was not sure if it was the
drink or she did not hear what Guen say. " Mounted? What do you mean
mounted . The only thing I know about mounting is"....... Kara`s face
became real red and she blushed from her head to what looked like her
toes. " OH my"...and she drew her hand to her lips. Your not talking
about.......
" But in all honesty, my friend, I was inviting you to join me
on a different sort of quest. I have reached a decision. This TenDay I
have seen too many victims of Jarg or his like! I and any I alone can
gather him out to bring him down. Woman , I may be, weak-not these last
turns!! I am a survivor, as are you and the others. We go-the Vengence
begins."
Pausing to gather her composure, Guen watched the face of the
half elf. "I would have you join me in this,Kara. You too know this
one-I heard him in you mind. I well sell the mares tomorrow -they will
provide us with means to travel and perhaps a few
warriors to help us fight. I hope that you will accept the mare-she
is ours regardless of your decision."
" Kara, Jarg is deadly. He will
cause your death to be long and painful, if we are caught. Know this,
going into the quest.Thou are free to refuse. I am bound. My belly is
full to the gorge with what this creature has done, simply because
none will stop him. I must try."
With a grim look on her face, The Wareen girl stopped talking and
gazed into the flames. Raza raised her muzzle and howled-a grief
stricken, bone chilling sound that frozen the entire in in quiet ,
before voices resumed much more quietly around them.
Looking down at her boots, she took a deep
drink from her glass and held her head. "I don't know if its the
drink, or the chance of getting my hands on the man that killed my
parents, but I am willing to follow you until the time we catch up
with Jarg or we find or heads sticking on one of his poles.
I was thinking of a trying to find others to help us in our quest. We
are going to need a mage, be it male or female. Also it might not hurt
to have someone that is a tracker or warrior, or both. The road to
finding Jarg, will be long and perilous with meny dangers along the
way. I have heard things about the desert and the meny deadly
creatures that live out there. I have watched others walking
over by the bar. There is a bulletin board where one can place and
read ads forhelp. Wait here and I will go and see if anything is up
there that might help us".
Getting up and finding that she was a little dizzy, Kara stagers over
to the bars and start reading a few of the ads. " Here is one for a
dancer. No that will not help. Here is another for a mages help but
its over a year old. Hugh, you need to clean this thing off once in a
while. Some of these have dates back to the first wars". Hugh smiles
and says "I know, but I can never find time to
do that. I am afraid I might pull one down, and the one that placed it
there might still need help or still seeking help. I will get to it
soon", and he goes back to wiping a glass. Kara laughs," there is
enough paper here to keep the inn warm for years.
Finding paper and a pen, she stuck her tongue out and
placed the tip on her tongue."Yucky", and started to write:
" Damn, I told
Hugh no alcohol in my drink", and her head drops and hits the table
with a smack. She was still holding her glass, and didn't spill a
drop. If anyone would have walk by, they would think Rolf was growling
at them. Rolf knew better.....
Hearing Kara snoring,
he looked into Raza`s eyes and said "Ahh.. Can I stay in your room? I
will not get any sleep with all that snoring going on", and he thought
to himself, "and no one else will either.
Standing she moved to the kitchen
door-"Sara? There you are. I must check on the Mares and Hai'nn. Can
you keep a eye out for my friend , she is ahhh-singing? a little now. "
With an understanding pat on the back Sara pushed Gueny on out the
door.
The chill night air helped clear Guen's head as she walked the
short steps to the corral. The horses were all fine. Leaning on the
rails of the corral, listening to the soft whuffling and snorts , she
reviewed the days events. *Seem to have made a friend* The lonely girl
thought.* Haven't done that in a span of seasons. But this woman,
there is a bond there -almost as if we had a history. Yet I can't seem
to recall meeting her before.Ah,
time will test all. And this Kirjath, I wish he would reappear-he
seemed one of heart-worth the knowing. He came to the aid of two
strangers, without the asking. * Returning to the Inn , she shook
Kara, to waken herand send her to bed.
"Oh..Where am I..God, I have a headace and a half. The
last thing I remember was writing something on a piece of paper, and
then walking back to the table." Stumbling is more like it", she heard
a patron say.Pulling back her hair and giving the man a dirty look,
she said in a quite voice, " I would be careful what you have to say
about me", and she bent down and rubbed Rolf neck. "Come on boy, lets
get away from this so called man".
Reaching over the table, she grabs the staff, and started stagering to
her room. With the help of Guen, and the staff , she was able to get to
herroom. Rolf was by her side, carrying the satchel that she left
behind." Good boy. I would'nt know what to do without you. "
Reaching in
her pocket ,she brought out the room key, and tried to open the door.
After the third try, it went in,and she turned the key, and heard the
click.
The door swang open, and she saw a very soft bed, sitting in the
middle of the room and a window over looking the forest. " Just like
Hugh said it would look like. Walking in and dropping the staff , she
falls into bed and started snoring once more. Rolf pulled her boots
off, and waited for Guen to roll her the rest of the way on the bed.
After Guen covers her up, Rolf follows her out the door. Looking
over at Raza, he smiles.
Guen caught the thought and sent *Raz, if you don't take that OUTside,
I'll make you very sorry !*
Looking totally innocent , Raz curls around
Rolf
a few times, *MM-Rolf , shall we check on the horses?* Hound grin over her
shoulder, as she opens the latch with a paw, Raz glided out the door.
Weary beyond belief, Guen undressed and climbed into bed.* Would that
tomorrow goes well, Lady. Bring Your Blessings on us.Watch over our friend
Kirjath.* With that prayer , the girl of the desert slipped into the realm
of sleep.
Kirjath sat there with his back leaning against a
tree, letting the medicine take full effect. He wasn't
sure what to make out of all that had transpired
tonight. Guen and Kara had reached out to him. They
provided him with a meal and then they had fought
against the ghouls. As he remembered the fight, a
surge of satisfaction rose up within him. Battle gave
him a sense of purpose and brought him out of his
self-pity.
Walking back toward the Inn, Kirjath wondered whether
the women would still be there. As he passed by the
stable, he realized that the horses were still there
and unharmed.
Kirjath sneaked silently into the stable. One of the
horses snorted in disapproval, but Kirjath paid no
heed. Finding an empty stall, he laid down on the hay,
closed his eyes, and the images of his broken homeland
returned to him in his dreams.
*Thank the Gods for big hearted women!*
No Raz yet- *Must
have been a good night for her to sleep in * Guen thought with a
smile. One steaming , luxurious Bath later, dressed in her market
clothes, Guen sat at her favorite table by the fire waiting for a huge
breakfast. Desert metabolism allowed her to eat almost as much as
Hai'nn and sat rib thin. She watched as the wealthier buyers drifted
in, making sure they saw her. Bran, the stable boy had already let her
know which had been admiring her string.
Guen had picked out a young
mare for Kara , a Silver line back with white mane, tail and four
white stockings. The mare was flashy , but sound, and
trail wise. It was a horse she wouldn't hesitate to ride into
danger. She saved back a gelding , too. For some reason , she felt that
Kirjath would rejoin them. Other than that her mental inventory left
ten mares for sale.
Trained war horses all, they would bring top dollar at the
market today, in fact ,if she worked it right she might make her sale
here.
*No. that would not give the buyers a chance to bid up the
price. Best go on to market after breakfast*
Fingering the rich
material of her gown and cloak, she enjoyed feeling well dressed
again. Looking like a defenseless woman , often gave her a sharp edge
in trading. Men tended to assume a lot , when they focus
a on a pretty face and figure. Guen caught the traders speculative
glances from the corner of her eye.
*Good , they like the mares.*
Sara brought in her food and one small lad. The elven child had
brightened with food and sleep. He still wouldn't talk to any but Raz. Guen told
him to eat, and then they would talk. Glancing around, she looked for
Kara.Grinning to herself, she thought*I imagine she'll be very
enlightening to be around THIS morning.*
Thinking
about Rolf, she looked under the bed and around the room. " Now where
did he get off to now"? Shaking her head, she walked out of the room
and bumped into Sara bringing some towels up. " Well good morning,
sleepy head. How are you feeling today". Kara looked up at Sara and
while holding her head, she asked " Would you have time to run me a
nice hot bath with lots of bubbles and perfume beads, would you? I
would be willing to pay for it". Sara laughed and looked at her. "Guen
is already downstairs and waiting on you . She has ordered breakfast
and is in her "selling clothes". I have already drawn you a nice hot
bath, and here are some towels. Now get freshened up and I will tell
Guen that you will be down in a bit. Now go on scoot",and Sara pushed
Kara into a small room.
Looking around, she saw a large brass tub with clawed feet holding
it up. After locking the door, she undressed and slid in. The hot
water yielded from her touch, but finally gave in and she lays back,
letting the water caress her skin. " That feel so good". Taking a
small bottle that was laying near the tub, she pored a little fluid in
the water, and stirred it around. "Smells like rose petals". Closing
her eyes she slip up past her hair and goes under water. Coming
back up, she finds a wash rag and started scrubbing herself real hard.
" I can not believe it has been so long". The water started turning
from clear to a little dirty. Laughing, Kara said, "I cant believe I
was so dirty, But I guess it has been a while. Getting caught in the
rain doesn't count I would guess". Finding another bottle marked
shampoo, she took a little out and placed a small amount in her
hand. Rubbing her hands together, she started washing her hair. Her
hair started to change from a dirty brown color to a rich bronze
color.
After she was all clean, she got out and dried off. The towels
were warm to the touch and big enough for two people to use. Looking
around for her clothes, she noticed that they were gone. " Great, now
what am I suppose to do? I cant very well run down and ask Sara for my
clothes back". Wrapping on of the big towels around her, she unlocks
the door and peeks out." Good no one is out there. With her hair wet
and only a towel, she ran out of the bath room and down to her room.
She was about to go in when she saw Rolf coming up with a silly grin
on his face. " Where have you been all night"?
Chuckling under
his breath, he headed down, with his tail wagging. She could hear him
say" Hope Raza is there"........
Closing the
door to her room and locking it, she pulls the towel off and finishes
drying her hair. Taking a brush out of the pack, she went about
combing her hair. At first the brush was not working to well." Wind
blown look", Kara said and laughed. "God I needed that bath. It felt
so good". Finally getting her hair combed, she started putting her
pants on. They were a little tight, but she was able to get them tied.
They were black leather, and they showed her muscled legs. "Not
to bad for a half elf" and she reached for the shirt. The shirt was
soft, and warm.
She turned and heard someone
knocking at the door. Opening it, she saw a small boy with freckles
over his nose and under his big brown eyes. He was standing there
holding a pair of brand new black boots. Looking up, the small boy
said "Ahhhh..ahh.. Miss, Sara sent me to gather your boots and take
them to the leather shop, but you see...ahh.. that is.." Kara looked
down at him and saw he was nervous. Bending down on one knee ,
she smiled and looked into his big brown eyes. "Its ok boy, I will not bit you". What is it you are trying to say"?
The boy took a big
gulp of breath and said " Miss. The boots Sara told me to get have
fixed..well..The man at the shop..well..he told me that they were to
bad to be re..re..fixed up. I ran back as fast as I could and told
Sara.well..ah..she told me to go back..ah..to the shop, and ah.. pick
out a pair of boots that would fit you..I .. I asked the man at the
shop.. and he..he.. gave me these", and he held up a pair of black
boots that were beautiful. The soles were hand stitched . The leather
was softened by hand . The heel was set up low, and plated with steel,
to keep them from wearing out so fast. Taking the boots from the boy,
she sat at the end of the bed and pulled them on. "They fit like a
glove, and they are so soft". They reached up to her knee and formed
around her calf .
Standing up and moving around, she could tell that
these were the best boots the leather smith had. Turning to the boy,
she asked "How much"? and saw the boy reach into his pocket. Pulling
out a piece of paper, she read the note!
On her way down stairs , she met up with Sara. "Kara, you did a good
thing back there. The boy doesn't have much, with his parents gone. I
use him for errands and things around the inn. He doesn't get to many
tips, but when he does, he helps all the other children that are like
him. Those five coins will feed him and the others for a long time.
Thanks again", and she places her hand on Kara's shoulders. Kara
thought she saw a tear, but Sara turned away.
Walking over to the
table, Kara looked down at Guen, and said " Thank you for
helping me last night. I am not use to the spirits.
Have you ordered breakfast yet? I am hungry"...........
br>
Breakfast finished, she asked Kara " Are you ready for Market? I must take
care of my business, before we leave." The pair gathered the horses that
Bran had ready and Guen ran her finger down the front of the specially
designed skirt. She showed the Silver Mare to Kara and said "Ready? Let's
show them what MY horses can do."
Mounting Hai'nn, she cued the mares and the entire herd danced down the
main throughfare, not a step off beat. Proud carriage, gentle manners and
bright hides shining, they were the focus of the entire Faire. "Not another
horse to compare! " Guen thought ,with sheer joy feeding her body. This was
the one true happiness left her -the feel of power in the horse she rode.
Halting in the square she proceeded to put the stallion thru his paces ,
then signalled each of the mares in turn.
By the time the first hour was over each mare was sold to greedy buyers
and she had many offers for Hai'nn. The desert girl felt htat she had placed
her mares well. Each of the buyers eemed to be one who would care for the
horse. Inwardly, she was estatic about the prices they had brought.
Turning to Kara, she said "Let us return to the Inn and see what or who
we can hire to help us."
Every muscle felt stronger, every breath felt lighter, every heart beat felt like she was alive once again. It did not take her very long to reach Montfort.
Laughing , her eyes all aglow, she says " Yes, I remember. I also remember the nights we had as well", and she winks at him. " You don't look to old to do the things we use to do". Laughing she added "I will be staying at the Dragons -inn for a few days. If you find time from your busy schedule, why don't you drop by and we can ahh... talk... about the old days", and her tail curled up around Dougs neck. She watched him blush, and it made her laugh again. "My..my. Doug. You didn't use to blush when I did that" , and she gave him a kiss. Turning, she pulled her tail off from around his neck and went in. Without turning she called back "The Dragons-Inn. I will be in the old room " and she slinked away.
Spitting near the guard that was laying on the ground, trying to catch his breath, Doug said " I am thursty. Take this so called Guard and place him up in the tower facing the west.I do not want to see his face ever again". Walking away, he heard some of the other guards say, "The west tower? That has to be the lonliest place to be. No one sees anyone up at the west tower". On guard said "Well? You heard the Sargent. Get this man up to the west tower, OR would you rather have him come back and tell you again"? About four guards picked up the man that was still trying to catch his breath and headed towards the west tower. As the group was walking out of sight, one could here a weak plea " No..no..not the west tower...noooo............
Opening the door, with it familiar squeek, she steps in, and watches as all the patrons heads turn to the door. Smiling, with her tail dancing behind her, she walks up to the bar and waits. She didnt have long to wait. Hugh came from out back, carrying an arm load of glasses. With a soft velvet voice , she said " Hello there handsome. Would you have a sauser of milk for this little kitten"? She tried not to laugh when Hugh dropped the glasses on the floor and watched as he slowly turned, to see Tigra sitting by the bar , with her tail in her hand , spinning it around between her fingers.
"Hugh , what did you do this time"? She heard Sara say."It was nothing, just a glass is all", and he ran over to where Tigra was sitting. With a big grin, and both arm open, he pulled Tigra close, and with a big hug, said " Tigra, you little brat, you scared the life out of me. My girl, it has been a long time since I last saw you. You look great". Trying to breath, Tigra let out a little "thanks" before Hugh noticed she couldnt breath.
"Oh, sorry, Its just I am so happy to see you. What brings you back to Montfort. Last time you were here we had "..... Laughing, Tigra said, "I know, and I do apolagize for the last time I was here . If it wasn't for your "Magic bubble" the guards would never have caught me. I still think that elf was cheating at cards. Oh speaking of cards, do you still have "The Widow". I have missed him for to long now. I can pay this time". Hugh laughed, " You could pay last time, but you were to drunk to remember how much you owed. Yes I still have the Widow. It in the back near the rest of the stuff you left behind". Running back into the storage room, he yells at Sara. "Can you clean up the glass I dropped while I am in here"?, He asked sara, while heading to the back .
Sara looks at him , and shaking her head, she brings out a broom, and pan. " One glass he said. One glass. It looks more like all the glasses we have are here". Sweeping the glass she sees Tigra sitting at the bar, watching her. "Did you do this"? Tigra looked up from watching her tail and said "Me? All I did was say hello to Hugh. Its not my fault he's so jumpy", and she smiles a cats smile. "Jumpy huh. I have never seen Hugh jump before now". Shaking her head, she cleaned up the glass and steps out back. Tigra could hear Sara yell to Hugh, " Since when have you been jumpy"? She was not sure what Hugh said, but it brought a laugh from Sara.
Hugh came back from the store room with something that was wrapped in a old oily rag . It was about three feet long and heavy. Laying it on the counter, Tigra unwraped the cloth to see a beautifuly made sword and sleeve. It was made out of the finest steel, Dragon forged, and folded over twenty times, to make the edge razor sharp. The hilt was carver with a Dragons claw, and the claw was holding a deep black globe. The sleeve looked to be made from Dragon skin, and ordained in silver inlay. Tigra picked the sword and shook it around, making figure eights in the air, and swiping the air. One could almost see the air split around the sword, like butter to a hot knife.
"Hello there . I have missed you by my side for to long. It still sings to me Hugh. It has not forgotten the song of death". Placing the sword back in the sleeve, she asks Hugh for a good drink, and some of his wifes favorite meals. Placing The Widows sleeve on her belt, She walked over to the fireplace and finding a table that was unocupied , she pulled out a chair that had no backing -for her tail- and sat down. Placing her feet near the the fire, she felt at home once again. She watched Sara bringing a plate of fresh meat and a large glass of dwarfen ale . Taking a deep drink, and finding it to her taste, she smiles at Sara, and adds " Put it on my tab along with the glasses Hugh broke. I will gather the rest of my things, and pay Hugh tommorrow. I have a few things I have to do first".
She watched Sara walking away, laughing and wispering in Hughs ear. Hugh looks over at Tigra, and smiles, trying not to laugh out loud. Unknown to Tigra, the dwarfen brew left a foamy mustache under her little nose. It made her look like she had whiskers. Reaching out with one fingernail, she started etching a picture of a forest with a beautiful sunset, dipping down into a large body of water into the wood of the table. She didnt pay much attention to the patrons. She would feel if there was going to be trouble. With her feet up, and one hand on her glass, she etched and waited.......
Guen grinned *no . the idea is to draw a few hardy warriorsor a mage or two our way! This is bait.*
With that guen settled down to plan out thier route and supply needs. *Where is Bittea when i need her?* Guen's old friend, a Trail master , bittea would have been a great deal of help.
Just then she heard glasses breaking. Hugh rushed by , running like a hound with it's tail between it's legs.Gazing around to find the cause of Hugh's discombobulation, she speculated when she saw who had caused it...*Mmmmm, I wonder...?
Gazing at her companion with love, Raz let a mental chuckle escape. She knew Guen only too well.
With a sigh, the girl returned to the paperwork in front of her.
*I wish Kara would return from the market. she's going to wear out those new boots before she goes anywhere!*
A candle later, Guen sat back rubbing her neck. Looking up she saw the catgirl again. *raz, this one belongs with us.*
Raz lolled a tongue *well, on yourhead be it!*
Pushing back her chair with a decide air, Guen stode over to the other table. "Miss? Excuse me , but would by chance be interested in a job? We are beginning a long journey and have need of several companions to assist in protecting the group and in hunting for provisions. The pay is minimum, but it is steady work."
Guen smiled at the girl, adding "Then too, you'd have the great pleasure of annoying my Companion Raz over there. " Chuckling, Guen indicated Raza, sitting with her back very clearly turned on them.
"My name is Guen WaReen, and I am well known in Mont fort as a tradere of horses. Please inquire and then let us know. We will be leaving before dawn tomorrow. " With a short bow, Guen left the girl to think it over and returned to her table.
Laughing at Raz's insulted attitude, she sputtered "Settle down Raz, After all you can always tree her , if she gets to be too much trouble!"
Laughing, Hugh went on "The buyer was not happy so he tried to take the mare. He threw Guen a sack of coins, and reached for the mare. Before anyone knew it , the bag was split open and so were the man's pants. Let's just say he will not be standing to relieve himself anymore. She cut off his 'thing ' before the coins hit the ground. It was a sight. They took the buyer to the healing tower, and the coins were passed around to those in need. She has always looked out for the needy. Be it young or old, I have seen her go hungry, but she always made sure that a child would have something in his belly for the night. As for the hound? That is Raza, Guen's Companion. She goes where ever Guen goes. She has a friend as well-her name is Kara Stonewing."
"Now Kara is another thing. She is new around here. As you saw she is half Elf. I do not know too much about her, but from what sara tells me , she is a lot like Guen. She is very pretty, and I think she is about eighteen or nineteen summers old. She has an old staff she carries everywhere , and when she let's go of it,it just stands there, I mean it doesn't fall over. It's like it's stuck to the floor. Sara told me she bumped into it and it didn't even move. It was like hitting a wall, she said. The wolf she has is called 'Rolf' of all things.
Laughing, Hugh asked "Is there anything else you need?"
Tigra said "another glass of your dwarven ale, please?"Hugh pored another glass and she took it back to her table and waited. *I wonder if they need any help?* she thought to herself.
It was getting late in the day and Tigra was getting bored. No one bothered to say anything to her or even smile. "Do I smell that bad" and lifted a hand to her her nose. "Nope, not me.". Taking a drink of her ale, she couldn't help but notice the young girl Hugh called Guen, studying a table full of maps. She saw Guen look up from the maps from time to time and look over at her. Tigra was about to get up , when she noticed Guen talking to her hound, and saw the hound turn her back on Guen. *Raz looks mad* she thought to herself and took another drink.
Etching a few more lines on the table, she didn't know anyone was standing beside her until she heard Guen say "Miss? Excuse me, but would you by chance be interested in a job? We are beginning a long journey and have need of several companions to assist in protecting the troup and in hunting for provisions. The pay is minimal, but it is steady work. " Tigra saw Guen smile. "then too, you'd have the pleasure of annoying my companion, Raz, over there." Chuckling, Guen indicated Raz, sitting with her back turned on them.
Guen finished speaking a few moments later and left. Tigra was sitting there , thinking it over. Tigra heard Guen laughing at Raz and saying"settle down Raz. After all, you can alwasy tree her if she's too much trouble!"
*Too much trouble , huh? We will see who trees who*,and she started walking over to the table to sit down. She watched Raza get up and leave. Dragging her chair with her, she she sat down at guen's table, and with her tail holding the drink, she said "Hello Guen WaReen. I am Tigra Swift.I am interested in your little job, but I think Raza has other thoughts. " Smiling, she asked " Is there not more to your little band? I thought Hugh told me that you have a young half elf with you . He said her name was Kara...Kara Something... Oh, well, it will come to me in a bit", and reaching for her drink , she took asip and waited for a reply.
Kirjath felt he might of made an error in bringing that up into Guen's conversation."I would join your quest against whoever attacked you...and my thanks to you ...for the meal last night" he quickly added.
> There, the slim, cone-like spikes dwindled gradually down as short as
four inches. The tail was two-thirds the length of the -twenty five foot
long- body, and tipped with a razor sharp, spade shaped tail blade.
Powerful hind legs rippled with thy and calf muscles. The huge, thick,
cream-colored talons dug into hard packed earth. Hugely strengthened
chest
held forearms that were just as strong, though more slender, with narrower
talons, built for slicing appart prey. Three front toes and one back,
were
for each limb. Marbelized browns and golds swirrled up its scales, giving
the impression of a stone carving. The only hint of life was the bright
gold eyes, with startlingly red pupil slits, taking in everything about
its surroundings.
This great beast had no gender, it could be either male or female,
dragon or dune. It was the only one of its type.
Sandanamous . . . the
Sand Dragon.
Finally, it employed its chief power, begining to ripple like a mini
sand storm. Body parts melted away, a sand castle under high tide.
Melding
and shifting until, finally, what stood before the Inn, instead of a Sand
Dragon, was a sandy haired youth. All of eighteen was he, bronze skinned,
sleek and muscled. Six feet tall, he was clothed in a simple, cream
colored
tunic, belted with a cord of woven gold. A sword hung at his side.
Copper
blade, with a hilt of carved, petrified mohogany, it was an unusual
artifact. Stepping forward on leather sandles, the straps lacing up his
calf Greek fasion, the transformed Sandanamous entered Dragon's Inn.
Sounds and sights, bombarded his eyes and ears, startling to the
dragon
who was used to silent stone cliffs and deserts devoid of large, noisy
life.
>He crossed quickly, and selfcontiously, hand straying to hilt as this
> creature or that human moved past him, or made a loud noise. Finally, he
was at the message board. Would the name be here? Would they have even
thought to come to this place? No. It wasn't, and they didn't. Blinking
rapidly, Sandanamous turned from the board. Curiously bright eyes stared
sadly at the wood floor. Jessica . . . Michael . . . little Fen . . . all
gone . . . no telling where . . . With a deep sigh, his gaze returned to
the
plorethera of sygnatures and writing. One note caught his eye, for no
particular reason. Touching it with a finger, he drew its scent to his
nostrils. Carefully sniffing, he turned to regard the room. Picking up
a
faint trail, leading from the Inn's rooms, he followed it until he came to
a
table with a woman, tiger-woman,a grim warrior and pile of maps.
"Hello," hesitantly he spoke, unaware that he had a soft voice,
musical
and pleasant to the ear. "Would you like a warrior for your company? I am
skilled at fighting, and know some types of magic-working." His shoulders
were held back, in a strong posture, though he felt very insecure as a
human.
It wasnt to long before Kara found herself buying things she might
need for the trip. Some rope, a few sharp knives for cutting, and nice
bridle and saddle for her Mare. She made sure that the bridle was
bitless. She hated hurting anything. Rolf was right by her side most of
the time, when he wasnt wondering off a stealing bits of food from the
venders.
Stealing was not really the word . It was more like enticing
the venders. Rolf would walk up to one of the venders and give them
his starved , sorry look, and they would give him scraps of food . If
he found something to his liking, he would drop it on the ground and
stick his tongue out , making them think it was not good enough. They
would offer him something better, and he would eat it and lick his
lips. Then when they were not looking, he would bend down a pick up
what he dropped , then go to the next vender and do the same.
" Rolf, Quit that. All that rich food is going to make you sick. And I am not going to hold your head this time. Rolf looked up at her and
smiled.
** If I remember right, who was not feeling to well this
morning** .
"Well thats because of that Brain freze Hugh gave me.
I told him , no alcohol . Thats why I was so sick".
** I tasted that
drink . All there was in there was fruit juice and crushed ice, ** and
she saw him shake his head and walk over to another vender.
Finding her way around, she happened apon a small shop . At first she
did`nt see the door way. But as she turned to go back, there it was.
The small faded sign, that hung above the door said " odds and ends"
and below that "things of magic". Walking in, she heard a small bell
ring. Looking up she said , "Strange, no bell . Looking around the
little shop, she saw a few swords on the wall and shields. There was a
shelf full of books. Walking over, and picking one up, she dusted the cover off and started reading. " The Book of spellbinding". Reaching
for another , it simply read "Spells". Placing the book down, she
looked to see if anyone wa there to help.
"Hello..Excuse me, but is
there anyone here? She heard a strange noise and turned to see a very
strange man looking her up and down .
The old man stood about four foot three. He had very big ears, a long
nose, and a sharp chin. Gold wire rimmed glasses stuck down near the
tip of his nose, and his golden eyes shone brightly.
"Yes, do you need
my help? Why, I could not know, for everything is marked what it is
and priced . All you have to do it look at the label and see that".
Looking at one of the books and not seeing any label, the old man said
"Those damn scamps , they went and placed a spell on my lables again.
Just wait until I catch them, I am going to turn them into frogs.
Thats what I will do, frogs..with big warts . Damn scamps"...
Kara heard him say something, and waved his hand around the room.
Before her eyes , small white labels started poping up, telling what
each thing was, and the price. He looked at her , and then at the
staff that she was carrying.
" Are you going to buy that, or just
carry it around"? he asked.
" What? The staff? Oh thats mine. I carried
it in with me". The old man looked up threw his glasses and smiled a
toothless smile. " Ya..ya.. thats what they all say. Now are you going
to pay the price, or should I call a Tower guard and have him throw
you in jail for theft".
Kara was getting mad at the old man, and Rolf
was not very happy as well. Rolf started to growl, but with a swipe of
his hand, Rolf shut up.
** What did he do? I cant open my mouth** and
Rolf started pawing his mouth ,trying to get it open.
"Old Man.." She
started to say, but he stopped her." I am called Morfadon Grunch, not
old man. It says so on the sign out front. Now then, If the staff is
yours , then you will have to prove it, or put it back from where
you got it"!
"Prove it? Prove it? Why you old"... and she stopped and
took a breath. "Listen to me very careful Mister Morfadon Grunch.
First, this is MY staff. I brought it in with me. Second, if you look
real close , you will see that there is no label on it. I am sure that
you have cast a binding spell to the label so no on can pull them off.
Third, I want you to take the binding spell off of my Wolf, Or I will
use this staff to beat on top of your head".
Morfadon backed up and
looked through his glasses once more, and saw that the staff was not
one of his.
" My apoligies, but one can never tell for sure these now
a days".
" I have a few brats that are just studying spells, they are
driving me crazy. I thought that you might have been one of them . I
am sorry, really. Look around, and if you see anything you like, let
me know. I will give you a discount for your troubles. Oh my friends
call me Morf". Waving his hand once more, Rolf found he could open his
mouth again. He tried to bit Morf, but only bit air when he disappeared.
There was a bit of noise in the back room, and a little cursing as
well, and she heard Morf say " never could get that spell right".
She laughed, and looked about the shop some more. At last
she picked up the spellbinding book and yelled back to the back room.
Ah..Morf. I found what I want".
From the back room, she heard him say,
"Well place it on the counter, and wait . "Gasp with be with you in a
few minites". Kara thought "Gasp? now who is Gasp"?, And before she
could get an answer, she saw a soft glow of a blue orb floating near
the book. She waited for the orb to move or say something, when a
ghostly hand reached out and took the book. She let out a "gasp" and
her heart started beating faster.
** Well. Now you know why its called
Gasp** Rolf said, then turned and walked to the door. It would not
open . **Kara, would you tell this Gasp, to open the door**. Kara turned and
gave Rolf a deep look and said "You can wait for me". The book came
back from the orb, and Kara saw the label was now gone. Calling back
to the room, she yellled " How should I pay for the book?". Morf
called back " You must be new in town. Its been taken care of", and
then more cursing. Damn scamps". Kara took the book and headed out the
door and back to the inn to show Guen what she found.
Turning to look
at the shop she came out of, she noticed that the little sign was
gone. Walking back, she noticed the door was missing as well. All that
stood there was a brick wall, and no marking that a shop was there at
all.
Turning back and heading out to the town square, she noticed that her
coin bag was a little light. Opening it she noticed she was two steel
coins short. In its place were three copper coins . "Well at least he
gave my change back". Running back to the inn Kara burst in the Inn
with Rolf right behind her, and ran up to Guen. Look what I found" and
showed her the book ."Its a book of spells. My mother had one of
these". Turning and almost sitting in Tigras lap, Kara jumped up and
looked at her. "Oh.. I am sorry. I was not watching where I was
sitting. I didnt know Guen had company. I am Kara..Kara Stonewing, and
you are..."?
Sitting back down again,
she started looking over the maps. "I know a little about this country
that you are about to embark to, and I can tell you , its very
dangerous. I have seen meny a person go there and never return. Let us
hope that we are not one of them. So. When are we going to head out?
What I have with me , is all I need" . Taking a drink of her ale, she
leaned back in the chair and waited...
Looking around the table and seeing that Guen
has found maps, she says " I know a little about this part over here",
Pointing to a place to the east, "But thats all I know. God, I am so
thirsty. Excuse me , I will be right back".
Walking over to the bar ,
Kara looks at Hugh, and says "Hugh, I am asking for something to
drink, and nothing like you gave me last night. A glass of juice is
all I want. Nothing but fruit juice". Hugh looked up from wiping a
glass, smiled and said " Ok Kara, one glass of fruit juice coming up".
Reaching behind the bar, he pores her a tall glass of juice. "Now if
you can not handle this, then start drinking water".
Kara gave him a
hard look and sipped the drink. " Orange juice. Thanks". She sat by
the bar and watched Rolf wanting to go out. She started to reach over
and open the door , when a golden skinned boy walks in, and Rolf
sneaks out before the door closed. She watched him look around the Inn, then walk over to the board. Turning back , to see where Rolf was
going, she heard the boy say "Hello, Would you like a warrior for
your company? I am skilled at fighting, and know some types of
magic-working." Kara turned back to see that he was talking to Guen.
"Wow. One more to add the the group", and she went bact to sipping on
her drink..........
"Strange looking boy, and he smells funny too... Hmmm"..
Turning,
he catches the door before it closes and heads to the stables to find
Raz...........
Guen almost lost her reputation for
calm
when the tattered man walked in. She clasped his hand, gladly and
gestured
him to join them , waving his apologies away as unnecessary between
Companions.
Glancing around, Guen was pleased. She told Kirjath to pull
up a
chair
and turning to the gold skinned boy, offered her hand. "I am Guen
Wareen.
Please, be seated. We are all just now gathering, but I feel we have
our
company, if all are agreed?" Looking around for acceptance , she
continued.
"Well frightened might not be the word, more like a worried look. When he
first
walked in, he headed for the bulletin board, and not straight to our
group. It
was like he was searching for someone, or something. He even sniffed the
note."
Strange".
Walking over, Kara offered her hand, and said " It is good to
see you
again Kirjath . The last time I saw you, you was at the stables ,
fighting those
Ghouls. I hope that everything is ok with you". Looking at the bronzed
skin boy,
she said Hello, I am Kara Stonewing, and you are? ........
"I thank you all for agreeing to accompany me on my Quest. I think I
have spoken to you each individually about my reasons, but feel that you
should hear them as a group. If you then decide not to go, it will be
understood. But, once committed, there will be no turning back. By
associating with me, you will be marked as the walking dead, by any of
Jarg's ilk".
Drawing a breath, the Guen continues, "I am sworn to the
destruction of Jarg. He killed my family , and ravished our land, making it
uninhabitable for many seasons. Many of our folk, have been killed, more yet
mutilated and tortured and many starved in winters past , due to his cruelty.
He has taken a large grip on the Northland. My will is to break his hold
there. I cannot do it by strength, therefore I seek to do it by sabeotoge and
gueruilla warfare.Magic if that becomes available to us!"
Looking around at the group, she lowered her head into her hands for a
moment, then steeling herself, she continued.
"I owe you the why of my
personal vengence. Listen, then, while I tell the tale , as I learned it
from my Mother before her death, and then on my own. It is a tale to chill
the bones, but tells much of who and what Jarg is."
Melana walked up behind Jarg and wrapped her arms around his chest. Her
warmth filled his soul with happiness. Jarg could feel the slight bulge that
their child gave her graceful body. Turning to hold her, he gazed out over the
Forest. "Are you happy , My Love?" he murmured against her soft chesnut hair.
She laid her cheek against his chest. " I am full with the wonder of it My
Lord." With a slight smile,
she continued. " Never in all my childhood fantasies did I imagine that "THE
GREAT LORD JARG" whom I was to be forced to marry, would turn into the Prince
of my dreams! You have fufilled me, given me a child, built these beautiful
twin towers to please me and created the walled gardens -all for me? And,
greatest of all wonders , you love me! Jarg, how precious our life is to me."
Her arms tightened around him.
Jarg often thought of that night , when a few years later Melana fell ill.
She was dying. Through helping a local woman who was bespelled with an old
Evil, she broke the spell which had been killing the woman. Unfortunately it
backlashed, claiming Melana. Melana was spelled -with none close enough with
the strength to break
it. She aged at an astronomical rate. Jarg watched as his beloved wife aged
daily, failing before his eyes. He began to fear her Death, then as her time
grew short, he came to have a terror of Death itself. Melana, despite her own
pain, tried to comfort him, but to no avail.
Melana died. All their friends gathered to see her Honored to the tomb.
Jarg's
Sword Brother, Reen, a desert Lord, my father, was the one to force him away
from the tomb and into the Hall. In the great round hall the two men sat in
front of the fire. Reen had waved the others away, giving Jarg privacy.Reen
gazed at his dear friend. Sword Brothers since their first Cadet year, Jarg
was of all people , most near. What he saw was shocking. Jarg , normally a man
from whom joy and life radiated, was now sallow and grim. His swarthy desert
profile had gone from handsome well fleshed features, to a dark, hard- beaked
profile, mouth a cold slash across the bitter face.
As Jarg leaned back in the great carven chair, Reen could see the veins
through
his skin as Jarg's hands hooked like claws where they clutched the arms of
the chair. His once great muscled frame had become whipcord thin and drawn
tight. Reen could only grieve with him. He stayed a full Moon with Jarg, but
to no
effect. Jarg shut out everyone, even Reen. He sent the twin boys to be
fostered at the High Kings court, dismissing all the servants, doing his best
to empty the towers that had once been filled with happy voices. He drove
friends away with fits of anger, Reen restraining him and apologizing for
him.
Reen watched Jarg all spring , his thoughts ever more concerned. Something was
different. Jarg smiled again, but the smile never quiet reached his eyes. He
progressively became more vicious at practice. The troops began whispering
about the violence of his punishment for minor infractions. The summer
campaigns passed. Jarg won battles with an amazing regularity. He returned to
the Court, feted by all as the conqouring Hero.
As Autumn council approached , the Lords began to speak uneasily to Reen.Their
concern about Jarg's behavior echoed Reen's own. Many were gathered at Court
for Council.
One night Reen was enjoying a quiet time , feet being toasted by the fire,
a good book in his hands, when there was a knock on the heavy door of his
suite at the castle. Samah, his valet , answered the door and showed Jung and
Nichols in, two of the Council members. Rising , Reen said "Welcome, my
friends! Will join me by the fire?
Samah, something to drink!" Once Samah had provided the libations Reen sent
him to bed for the night.
After a few minutes of polite chit chat, Nichols
cleared his throat-"Reen,do you trust us?" he quierd in a worried tone. Jung
leaned forward, hovering on the answer.
Reen steepled his fingers, tapping
his mouth. Golden eyes
gazed steadily at the two men. "You are here concerning Jarg, are you not?"
Leaning back, Jung smiled grimly at Nichols. "I told you he knew what has been
happening."
Reen talked to them for over a candle about the cruelty Jarg was
displaying. "So, it is deeper than we thought." Shaking his head, Reen leaned
against the mantle.
Turning back, he said "Lords, you must needs understand
- Jarg and I grew up together. We married Ladies who were strong friends, had
our children in the same years, our wives even had twins at he same time we-we-were Sword Brothers, by the Gods!" Sweeping the
books off the study table, Reen paced angrily. "How can I be the one go to the
King about this?-No- someone else must do this thing."
Nichols came up,
carefully placing a hand on the tall desert lord's shoulder. "Reen , there is
none else that will be believed. The King trusts you, beyond all others. You
are known to all as an honest man. His Majesty will believe you, We MUST
prevent Jarg from gaining power, he wil..."
Jung interrupted-"There are
stories making the rounds , Reen , of traffic with the Dark. Jarg has bene
grievious wounded , yet has not bled.Servants disappear. Strange lights are
seen at the Towers. The people are
afraid."
Nichols took up where Jung left off.
"We must convince the King. Jarg
doesn't just win a battle, he razes the entire countryside to the ground."
Fear and repugnance quivered in Nichols voice. "Reen, Jarg is no longer the
honorable worrior we knew. He has changed. he belongs to the Dark now. We have
to stop him."
Reen thought for a few minutes. "Jung, my friend Nichols- we go
in to the winter. There will be no battles now, until spring. Give it that
time to prove true. I can do no more. If he continues his course then I will
speak to the High King. I give you my Word." The two Councilors weren't happy,
but were forced to conceed if they were to have Reens backing in their plan.
Reen returned home to his family for the winter.
Safe in the Keep with
Joanna and the children, life was good. He watched the children grow and
mature. What a joy they were! Ferrin and Schererhorne were young, but had seen
two seasons of battle. They were both tall, true desert stock, with golden
skin and eyes, shocks of thick black hair worn in their warrior braids. Hearty
laughter filled the halls when the boys were home. And young Guenyvere!
The laughter at the board each night in the great Hall , brought much joy
. The new baby Randall was passed from lap to lap, never being put down long
enough to cry, even. Reen and Joanna were truly blest.
The spring Call came
again. As time passed stories of Jarg's atrocities grew. Reen and the others
spoke to the King, but he was too pleased with the new territories Jarg was
gaining for him to be willing to listen. Finally in
a fit of pique, he ordered Reen out with Jarg "If you think he's so full of
Dark, then go control him!"
Keeping uneasy boundaries, Reen traveled with Jarg as the campaign moved
forward. Much there was to turn the stomach of the noble Reen.
But he forbear
speaking until the attack on Zamara. The small militia that faced them fought
well and bravely. They surrendered with dignity , asking only that their
families be spared. Jarg, high and black on his stallion, smiled at the
Captain."Yes, my fine Warrior, "He answered, "They will receive the same kind
treatment as you and your men." Turning his back on the man, he screamed at
his troops- " Destroy them all! Lay waste to this
land! Kill all, men , women and children. Leave me not one standing to tell of
a life without Jarg in power!"
Reen , soul shattered with horror at what his friend had become,
screamed out, "NO! By all that's Holy, No! You will not do this , Jarg! I am
your friend and Sword Brother and I say you will not do this Evil!"
Wheeling
his great War horse around with his knee, he spoke to the men. "This is evil.
We fight for Right-not like this. I call upon you to lay down your arms. You
know what is right-do it- in the name of the High King- Lay down you swords."
Reen's pleas touched the souls of even the most
hardened soldier. The sound of swords clattering to the ground or being
sheathed reverbrated over the battle field.Turning back to Jarg, Reen pleaded
"My friend, I beg you, turn from this path you have chosen. Come back to us!"
Jarg, with a dead gaze, replied "It seems the tide has turned , Reen. You
remember this day Reen, For I will right it."
Jarg
stayed for the final ball before all scattered to their individual holds for
the winter. Jarg publicly sought out Reen, and going down on one knee,
apologized, begging forgiveness.
Finally accepting the change in his old friend wholeheartedly, Reen forgave
him. "You will come to spend the Yule with us, Brother? You know Joanna, will
greet you with open arms!" They parted on the best of terms and the rest of
Court , following Reen's lead, forgave him as well.
Here, Guen's mother stopped. Little was Guen to know that her Mother's
part in the story would soon be over.
Excitement sparked the Hall. Yule was approaching and all the small
secrets were flying from mouth to ear and out again. There were expeditions to
find the mistletoe, and gather the greens - holly and ivy- to dress all the
Keep. While the cooks--Ahhh-the smells that wafted up from below the
stairswere heavenly!
Gueny was in a constant of excitement, and Now, best of all, her
cousin, whom she had yet to meet was coming! Kara would be staying the
season.
Finally! Another girl to share gossip and finery with! She had friends, but a
cousin? It would be almost as good as a sister! Let the boys beware!
It was a
busy time. One stormy evening as the family gathered around the huge fire,
Lord Jarg was announced. Joanna exploded into a flurry of welcome-throwing her
arms around his neck, then bustling to get him settled."Now ,Jarg!" She
admonished. "you will be staying the Yule with us. If you think I shall let
you escape again , you do not remember me well!"
Welcoming his man Rocler also, she showed them to chambers upstairs"Shake
off the dust and then join us downstairs, I'll have cook prepare dinner for
you".
Half a candle later, Jarg came down to join them. In answer to Joanna's
enquiry about Rocler, he said "He was weary and would rest awhile. I hope that
does not offend , My Dear?"
"No, no. I hope he rests well." Little Joanna was truly happy to see her
husband and his best friend on good terms again. The man made her uneasy tho.
She didn't like the hidden look in his eyes. It some how seemed cold and
dead.
The storm continued outside. The guards all huddled within the small
shelters on the battlements, staying as warm as possible in heavy weather like
this. It made it very easy for Rocler to open the postern gate , allowing
Jarg's men to slip through. Within moments the walls and battlements
were theirs.
Meanwhile Jarg, at his most charming, was regaling the family with tales
of Court. Young Gueny hanging on his every word. She was fast becoming
enamoured of this handsome Lord. it almost made up for the weather holding up the arrival of her cousin
Rocler stepped through the arch of the Hall
with sword drawn. Seeing this, the men reached for swords already racked for
the night along the far wall."Ah-ah-ah!" Jarg shook a finger at the group. "Do
not move if you value your women folk." Signing to his men, who had followed
Rocler in, he said "Bind them."
Indicating the
twins, he had the soldiers hold them with arms extended, then hacked off first
their legs then arms. As the lifeblood gushed from their veins and their
screams echoed in the great hall, he took their heads. Then reaching, tearing
open the chest of the bodies , he clutched their hearts and devoured each in
turn.Tears rolled down Reen's face. "Jarg, they were yet children in their
first beards!"Anguish reverberated in Reen's voice.
"All the better pleasure , my friend." Next he took young Ranald from
Joanna's arms. Joanna glanced at her Lord, then set her features."Yet another
angel of good." Jarg sneered. "Let me change that, then you , my dear Joanna
will be next." Holding the child by his feet he battered it's head against
the rocks of the wall, throwing the broken baby aside like a doll. Joanna ,
power surging through her muscles in her grief, broke free and lunged at Jarg,
when suddenly a crossbow bolt bloomed in her chest. "Noo-ooo!!"The word was
torn from Reen as he watched the lifeblood drain from his
beloved's body. Jarg cursed , striking the soldier who loosed the Arrow. "You
, Fool! She was to be mine,a long slow death, now she has died cleanly. You
shall not!"
The next
spring, high on a hill, Jarg was gloating. "Destroyed . This is the end of our
enemies, Rocler. We have searched out and destroyed all of Reens' line. None
have survived." Rocler asked "What of the girl, Milord"? "Bah, she can't
have survived a week in this-those pampered castle women are helpless to care
for themselves." With that they rode down from the hill.
Over the next years, Jarg no longer served the King Over the Montains., but
took the Steppe and Forest for his own. His name became a horror-It was
confirmed that he was dedicated to the dark He seemed invincible. Then
came a time of Revenge.
Finally Kara spoke.
" As I see it, we have only one option. We are
going to follow Guen to where she can find this Lord Jarg and let her
take her revenge on him. I have heard a few things about This Jarg,
and all of it wasn't very good. I also belive he was the one that
murdered my parents as well".
Placing her hand in the middle of the table, Kara said "Guen, I am
taking an oath. I will follow you to the ends of time, or until we
meet our fates. This is a promise that I place on my mothers and
farthers grave. You may do with it as you wish."
Her tail danced behind her. A small
thing it did when she was very excited about something. "I place my
hand in good fate, and let no one say that I do not keep my promise,"
and her other hand holds the hilt of the widow, with the blade showing
enought , meaning she meant what she said. " Will anyone else place
their hand on ours to show their fate to Guens Quest?" Standing there
with her hand on Kara, she could feel the young girls hand
shaking........
Standing, he locked eyes with Guen. "Now, I think, is the time to tell my
nature."
His soft voice took on a deep, grave tone. "Guen, you have a
dragon on your side. One that will follow you to the ends of Iffrean, and
beyond. I am yours to command, powers, skills and knowledge. Please
accept
this offer, in the hopes that I can, in some small way, help you reach
your goal." He added, almost to himself, "Far too often have I seen -good-
people suffer." Bowing gracefully, he added his hand to the three womens,
pressing gently, golden eyes still staring into Kara's.
Here and now
he
could help someone take revenge on a killer. He wished he could do the same
but had no clue as to what had happened to his people. It was frustrating.
Gritting his teeth with resolve, Kirjath joined the company.
"I will be there for you, too."
"I , Guenyvere Maharreea N' Wa Reen, do accept your Oathes of Loyalty
unto the Death. I , in turn, do Swear upon the Honor of my House, that I
will
serve you to the best of my ability. I will seek always the
best interests of the Fellowship, so long as it does not interfer with the
accomplishment of Jarg NoirCour's destruction. I will give Life for Life,
Blood for Blood, for each of you here Sworn. YOU are now my House. You are
now my Blood, and you have all the Rights that declares." She gazed deep
into the eyes of each one of the beings gathered. Even Rolf and Raz, who
laid
quiet at her feet.
"I further swear this Company to the Destruction of Jarg Noir Cour and
all that he stands for. We will pursue him until our dying breath and reach
for his throat, even as we lay dying!"
With that she laid her hand upon the others, then was silent.
Stepping back, she broke the spell of the moment. "Now-we need to leave,
as quietly and stealthily as possible-after our display just now. Kirjath,
I have a mount for you-I need you mobile. Have any others need for mounts-?"
Smiling grimly , she went on-"Don't worry ,it will come out of your salary."
" We go North-through the pass by Mysthaven, then Northeast through the
Badlands to Arrowind Abbey. It's a hard path, but one we are less likely to
attacked on. At the Abbey , there is a cleric who has been researching
Jarg -hoping to find the Source of his power. Where we go from there depends
on what has been found."
"Kara , you are so goooo-dd at the Bazzaar," Guen smiled at the small
woman" would you and Kirjath pick
up supplies?-We need camp food for the first seven day, and then pack
rations
beyond that." She handed the half-elf a sack of coins.
" Kirjath, we
especially need salt , to handle any meat we may need to carry. Gather any
tools you deem necessary for your work, also. You need to gather
what back packs and gear we might need should we lose the horses."
Turning to Tigra, she asked, "Tigra , would you mind seeing to grain and
a repair kit for tack?-We will have to carry grain through the badlands. You
will all find the mules in the stable yard. I want to leave 3 or 4 hours
before daybreak-Bran will let us out a small postern he knows, that is
seldom watched." Placing another bag in Tigra's care. She laid a hand in
thanks on the girls shoulder.

Guen finally leveled her gaze on Sandanamous. "May I call you Sand,
Sirrah?" One must always be polite to a Dragon. " Your name is great and
beautiful , but my poor tongue twists and stumbles on it. I am truly glad of
your company. Kara here, has aquired a book of Spells and I hoped that you
would know of a shop in which you might pick up any supplies that she would
need and any you might think of. ?" She bowed respectfully in his direction
, then placed a final bag of coins in his hands.,br>
"We meet here at dusk , to rest and eat. I need to see to the horses and
consult with an old friend about Jarg. Take care, my Friends." With a sign
to Raz, she headed for the door.
