#1 The Story of "Whatamess." About four years ago, a scruffy-looking dog showed up at the edge of our woods. It looked very lonely and frightened. It was covered with burrs and briars. We spoke very quietly and calmly to her (when we got closer to her, we could tell "it" was a "she") and she reacted appropriately by relaxing and trusting us not to hurt her. I cut out the burrs and briars. We gave her some food and water and lots of attention. The next morning, she was still here. We placed a "found" ad in the local paper and had several calls about her, but none turned out to be her owner. So we took her to the vet and the groomer and now she's OUR DOG and we couldn't be happier. She needed a home and we needed her; she's been a wonderful addition to our family. ~Sally Bennett, Ohio |

#2 The Story of Fluffy One day while I was delivering newspapers, I found a tiny Calico Kitten. I asked if anyone knew who it belonged to, but no one did. I decided to take her home in my newspaper bag. My mom wasn't very fond of cats, but she let me keep her. It was fall and getting cold and she woudn't be able to survive the winter. We named her Fluffy and she was a very good cat! ~Jackie Kirker, Ohio |
#3 A Bat Rescue Last winter we had a bat in our house (Twice). Our cat, Scruffy, found it for us. We put it in a box and took it to our neighbor's pool house so it could get back to hibernating. I hope we did the right thing! - Linda and Ed Wagstaff, Ohio |
