Heteroscodra maculata
Pocock 1899

This is Heteroscodra maculata, A beautiful spider that lives in the trees of Togo, this is a country in west-Africa. H. maculata lives in trees, mainly sheltering behind a leaf or in other hollow parts of the trees. This spider has got a very nervous temper, and when she is threntened by an enemy she won't wait with biting. The venom tha't she has got is a dangerous neurotoxin, It couses instabilitys and strong pains at the place where you've been bitten. Before she bites she always runs first, And she's a master at that! Though she has very short legs for an arboreal spider, Compared to the arboreal spiders of the new world ( Psalmopeus en Tapinauchenius a.o. ) who have very long legs., She is very fast!
As you can see they have very well adapted to the colours of the trees, In captivity they almost fade away on a cork log. There are 2 other officially named
Heteroscodra's
Heteroscodra crassipes ( west-Africa )
Heteroscodra crassipes latithorax ( Zaire )
These two look a lot like
H. maculata but they have somewhat longer legs and the main difference is the area they come from.
In captivity they should be kept in a high shaped tank, and quite a lot like
Avicularia's . Very moist, 75-80%. And a lot of climb and shelter possibilities. They make a lot of webbings in their tank and are nightly active.
That they should be kept like Avic's does not mean that you should treat them like that!! They should be treated with a lot of respect and carefulness!
