ACTIVITIES

As may be known there is an embargo on importing goods into Iraq by the U.S. and Europe. For that reason only financial support is possible at this moment. Besides it is cheaper to purchase the necessary materials locally, and it benefits the local economy as well. By offering financial assistance HEWAR aims to improve the conditions of the following population groups:

 1.  The school pupils
The schools have a shortage of everything; there is hardly any teaching material, the buildings and class-rooms are badly damaged, energy and water supply is rare or absent. Often there is a lack of money for transport to school for children who live far away, even for clothing and food. Where the buildings have been destroyed, they have to be taught in tents.

 2.  The war widows
In the fight against the Iraqi army countless Kurdish men died, disappeared or were murdered. Their widows are not able to support themselves and their children due to a lack of facilities. HEWAR helps them by establishing and furnishing workshops for sewing and carpet weaving . This provides a better future for their children.

 3.  The disabled children
For these children there is virtually no treatment or aftercare and no means of providing suitable equipment. Their great need is for a centre which can offer physiotherapy treatment and provide equipment such as wheel-chairs and crutches, and which has a workshop where prostheses or adapted shoes could be made.
