Episode One

A Hotel Room
Heaven Falls, Wyoming

Jamie Bowen groaned in pain as he slowly came awake. His entire body felt like it was on fire, and everytime he moved it was worse. He slowly pushed himself into a seated position and blearily looked around, not sure where he was. It took a moment for the fact that he was naked to work it's way to his brain.

When Jamie tried to stand, his legs gave out and cried out in pain as he sat down. He let out a whimper as tried to stand again, but couldn't. He looked back at the bed, then down at himself, unable to comprehend where he was or what had happened.

All too suddenly, a few memories of the night before came rushing back.

Hands on him, pushing him onto the bed, pulling at his clothes...

Jamie suddenly got a burst of strength and made it to the toilet before he started throwing up. He could feel the man's hands on him again, hear the man's whispered voice. Soon his near empty stomach had emptied itself completely and he was dry heaving. When the stomach cramps finally receded, he grabbed the edge of the sink and pulled himself to his feet.

He stumbled back into the main room and looked around for his clothes. Slowly, he began dressing, looking everywhere but at the mirror that stood along one wall over a dresser. When he was dressed, Jamie slowly stood again, and finally looked at his reflection. He stared at himself for a long moment, then sank down to sit on the end of the bed, doubling over as he sobbed.

KTVN News Station

Hannah Barrett headed for the coffee machine at KTVN, and growled when she saw the pot was empty. "Don't they know the rule?" she muttered under her breath as she started a fresh pot. "If you have the last cup, you start more. It's common courtesy. Especially when it's the mega-early shift that has to get ready for the morning news," she continued to grumble

"Has anyone ever informed you that talking to yourself is a sure sign of insanity?" Richard Grant, the station owner, said as he walked up.

"Did anyone ever inform you that making fun of me before I have my coffee is a sign of stupidity?" Hannah replied.

"And insulting the boss, another sure sign of..." Richard started then stopped when he realized he was about to get hit, station owner or not. "Why don't you have a cup from my private coffee machine in my office, hmm? Before you kill a hapless intern."

Hannah smiled. "Why, could it be? Are you asking little 'ole me, a lowly camerawoman, to enter your office for coffee?"

"No, I'm asking you to have a cup of coffee with me," Richard replied with a smile. "I understand you had a few suggestions that Rhonda wouldn't listen to. I'd like to hear them."

Hannah beamed. "Let me go get my notes and I'll be right there."

Richard nodded. "Don't be too long."

Hannah nodded and then let out a small squeal of excitement. She had been trying to get someone, anyone, to listen to her ideas for months. And now the station owner was. "I could kiss whoever finished the coffee!" she declared as she hurried to grab her notes.

Heaven Falls Medical Center

At this early hour, Med Center was nearly empty. A few doctors getting ready to go off shift and a few miscellaneous patients with minor injuries were the only ones there.

Which meant that Dr. Sarah Reed, Dr. Andrew Sanchez, and Nurse Lily Jackson were all fairly bored.

"As soon as the sun's up, I'm heading over to the golf course," Drew said with a grin. "As long as you can handle the run over to get me if there's an emergency, Lily."

Lily laughed. "You've got a beeper, Drew. I'll beep you if we need you."

"And break tradition?" Drew said, putting a hand to his chest in mock surprise. "I'm shocked!"

Sarah rolled her eyes. "You two are ridiculous! When are you just gonna get on with it and make out in an empty trauma room?"

Lily made a face. "I am a happily married woman!"

"So? Everyone needs a little fun on occasion," Sarah said.

"So why haven't you had a 'make out session' with him?"

"Drew could never compare to my Julian."

Drew leaned against the check-in desk, a dejected look on his face. "Nobody loves me."

"Finally, he gets it!" Sarah teased.

Lily chuckled then patted Drew's shoulder. "There, there. We don't love you, but we do like you. You're always good for a laugh."

Drew humphed at them. "Well, if you won't be nice, I'll just go do some rounds!" he said, pretending to be upset.

Lily chuckled as she watched Drew leave. "That man... we need to find him a woman."

"Yes, we do," Sarah echoed.

The Bowen Apartment

Mike Bowen paced the livingroom of the apartment he and his son shared, looking at either his watch or the wall clock every few minutes. "Where the hell is he?" Mike demanded, even though there was no one else there. "He knows his curfew is 1:00 when he goes to parties with Laura and David, damn it. There is no excuse for being over 5 hours late."

He paused and stared at a photo sitting on a small shelf near the door. The photo featured Mike, a young Jamie, and a beautiful woman with dark hair, Elizabeth. "He better get home soon so I can yell at him for making me worry. He's too much like you, Lizzie. Gets caught up in what he's doing and forgets everything and everybody else."

Mike resumed his pacing, only to be stopped by the door opening. He spun towards the sound and watched Jamie walk in. "Where the hell have you been?" he demanded.

Jamie jumped and dropped his jacket at the yell. He looked up at his dad. "Dad, I..." he started, then stopped. He couldn't tell his dad what happened. "I got mugged. My wallet, my cell, everything. And the guy kinda hit me a few times, so I spaced the obvious thing of calling collect..." he said. It wasn't entirely a lie. After dressing he had discovered his wallet and cell phone were missing, and he had been hit a few times.

Mike's expression softened slightly. "Are you okay, kiddo? Are you bleeding? Hurting anywhere?"

Jamie forced a smile. "You're a cop, not a doctor, Dad, stop impersonating one," he joked. "I'm fine. Really. Just a little... you know, out of it. The cop's kid never expects to get mugged."

Mike forced himself to calm down. "You had me worried," he said as he walked over and pulled Jamie into a hug, not noticing how his son winced painfully.

"Sorry, I just completely spaced out," Jamie replied. He pulled back. "Can I just go to my room and sleep? I'm really exhausted."

"Sure. I'll even let you sleep late, since you had such a late night."

Jamie forced another smile and headed for his room. "If only you knew," he whispered as he shut the door. He moved across the small room and slowly eased himself down onto his bed, wincing as he sat down. Not even bothering to undress, Jamie curled up on his side and cried again. He had never once, in his entire16 years of life, lied to his father. Until now, that is. He was anything but fine.

Med Center

Sarah was doing some paper work and Lily was doing some filing when two men burst into the ER. One of them was bleeding heavily from a wound in his shoulder.

"Lily, go get Drew!" Sarah called as she went to the men. "What happened?" she asked as she guided them to Trauma 1.

"Doesn't matter," the un-injured one said, glancing up at the TV just as a reporter interupted with a breaking story.

"A shoot out with Police on Drummond Drive left one officer dead and 2 wounded. One of the two suspects, described as a man in his late twenties or early thirties, was wounded, but both suspects escaped," the anchorwoman, Rhonda Corbin, said.

Sarah jerked in shock as she realized who she was working on. She looked out of the corner of her eye as the barrell of a gun was pressed to her forehead.

"That's right," the uninjured man said. "We killed a cop. I won't hesitate to kill you."
