Kenneth Branner I

ESTATE BLUE ---(*)---

When I first heard about Sidacious' plan for a "Plant-human", I nearly flipped my fucking lid (excuse my language). I know that man. He's a heartless bastard that only does things to further his fame and widen his wallet. I think I'm the only one in this damned group that might actually care about the sake of the Plants (I retract that statement, I know Sugara cares). They've got emotions, just like any human does. When Hedresion cut into Tre (the third Plant, a beautiful girl), she cried. I saw it. She was in pain. I begged for him to stop, yet he ignored me. He looked at me as if he'd spit on me if he wasn't in a place where he could screw up a precious experiment.

Rem... Why am I doing this? God help me...

At the birth, Dodici died... Her son was beautiful. Rem, let's have a kid that looks like him, okay? He had Dodici's eyes and'll probably have her hair too. His eyes... I recognize them.... Why was he cursed from the start?

With Sugara, the only one in the project with a shred of a soul, spoke to me privately outside the lab after the birth of the cross-breed. Like myself, he was a younger scientist. Maybe only a year or two ahead of me...

"Kenny," he said in his quiverring voice. He's a handsome guy, but obviously a geek. "What shall we name him?" We had started to name the plants, instead of resorting to Sidacious' "Number and Barcode" method.

"Well... He's the first of his kind. Hopefully, he'll lead the way for a greater cause," I said, half-thinking, half-mourning Dodici.

"We like Italian names, don't we? How about we give him an English name?" said Sugara. "And from your suggestion, 'Legacy' seems like a great name for him."

"Legacy? Hmph... Sound effeminate. He'll get a complex or something over it... I just know it. But it fits him, I think," I said. "Legacy it is."

"Good," Sugara said. His features turned dark and he pulled me to the side. "Kenny, we have to do something. About Legacy... And you know it. Sidacious likes you, and you're mostly incharge of him. Legacy, I mean."

Man... Sugara's good. Thinking what I'm thinking. "You think we can do anything this time..?"

"I'm positive. Kenny... I'm being transferred out of this project. I want you to save Legacy."

"WHAT!?"

"Shh...shh... I know. You've heard reports about the Calamity, correct?"

"Holy shit....yes....I have...." The Calamity is what the Science Department dubbed a giant astroid. Not just any astroid, either. This one was thought to be able to punch a hole through Earth as if it were a sheet of paper. It couldn't be true...

"I'm on the SEEDS project. I'm helping with the systems," he said. "I can secure a spot for Legacy on the main ship... I know it. You just have to get him out of there."

"I will... I don't want to see another die."

"Good," Sugara said, with his kind smile. "See you later, and tell Rem hello." Sugara sauntered off, and I realized where I'd seen Legacy's eyes... He looked back at me from over his shoulder, and with a small smile that was his trademark, said nothing. He left me in the hall alone.

Oh, Rem... My life has gone to hell in a handbasket, hasn't it? At least you're my ray of sunshine.
