Sara (Sallie) Vera Michael Born: June 1879, Walton Co., GA. 1 2 Parents: STARNES M. MICHAEL AND MARTHA C. ELDER 1 Married: 7 Jan. 1894, Walton Co., GA. 1 Death: 18 Feb. 1957, Baldwin Co., GA. 1 5 Burial: unmarked graves in the McElroy-Sims Cemetery, Oconee Co., GA. 1 Notes: Husband Thomas listed as a farmer in the 1900 Federal Census, Scull Shoals, Oconee, GA; indicates one child born, one surviving; both Thomas and Sara could read and write. Thomas listed as a farmer in the 1910 Federal Census, Chandler, Jackson, GA; indicates three children born, three surviving. As of 12 Sep. 1918, Thomas was a carpenter for the US Government at Fr. McPherson in Atlanta, GA; he lived with his family at RFD 2, Fulton Co., GA; he was tall, of medium build, with blue eyes and dark brown hair. 6 Thomas listed as a house carpenter in the 1920 Federal Census, South Bend, Fulton, GA. Thomas listed as a farmer in the 1930 Federal Census, Buncombe, Oconee, GA (indexed Tom J. Thompson); this census listed a Thomas Jefferson Thompson, Jr., but no such person existed -- apparently a mistake by the census taker. 1 Note from Linda Louise Thompson-Cook: Sallie's mother was Martha C. Elder, daughter of David Reade Elder and Minerva Calendar Clarke. Dad (Augustus Lamar Thompson) remembers nothing about an Edward, though he does remember the rest of them. There's a family story that Sallie took in a boy at some time, don't know just when, who gave most of the family tuberculosis. I'm thinking this Edward may have been the boy (you may have noticed he didn't attend school and couldn't read or write at the age of 12.) Granddaddy (William Jefferson Thompson) missed it because he'd gotten married and moved out earlier.Starnes, Ellis, and Charlie died from TB I think sometime in the '30's. Thomas somehow lived longer, though there's a story that they built a 2nd house for him to live in that had spaces between the wall boards to allow him to breathe better. (Dad saw the house.) Etta & Grace survived because they were sent to a sanitorium. Etta was the only sibling Granddaddy had contact with later; she moved to Texas and married a man named Maggard. Grace seems to have disappeared off the face of the earth.
