| After the death of Rudolph II, Kepler found his position at the court in Prague increasingly uncertain and the payment of his salary even more irregular. He therefore obtained permission from the new monarch, Matthias, to accept temporarily a post as provincial mathematician at Linz, in Upper Austria - where, in fact, he was to spend the next 15 years. |
