April Meeting The next meeting of the NorthWest Civic Association will be held on Monday, April 3, 2000 at 7:30 PM at the Burns Avenue School. Our speaker will be Hicksvilles new postmaster Edward Roggenkamp. Mr. Roggenkamp will update us on current happenings at the post office. In response to civic concerns, about traffic and safety, he will share plans that the postal service has for reconfiguring the building and parking lot fronting on West John Street. Penny Auction The Burns Avenue PTA will hold a penny auction at the school this Friday evening, March 31. The doors will open at 6:30 p.m. Bidding will begin promptly at 7:30 p.m. $5 admission. Grand prizes, gift certificates, all new merchandise. "A Night on the Town" Raffle tickets are available at $1 each or six for $5. Chances are available at our meetings. Give Irene Carlomusto a call if you cant get to a meeting to buy tickets. Anyone can buy the tickets. The drawing will be held at the July 23 civic picnic. Winner need not be present. First Prize l $50 in Gift Certificates to Red Lobster Second Prize l $50 in Gift Certificates to Boulder Creek The prizes were generously donated by our local merchants. Caught Doing Good Member Tommy Carlomusto was recently observed spraying something on a stop sign on Burns Avenue at Windsor Street. Initially it was thought he was up to no good, but it turned out he saw graffiti on the sign. Having a can of graffiti cleaner from work in his car, he stopped and cleaned the sign. Think how many good deeds unnoticed, but help to make our neighborhood a better place. ~ In Sympathy ~ John Ptaceks mother recently passed away. Our sympathies are extended to John, Hazel and their family.

Summer Picnic Mark you calendar for Sunday, July 23, 12 noon to 4 p.m. Bring your family and invite a neighbor from the Northwest. This is a perfect time to introduce them to the Civic. Picnic goers will be able to use the Cantiague Park pool at the resident rate with or without a leisure pass. Head chef, John Russo will demonstrate his culinary talents. There will be drawings and games for the children. A five dollar donation is suggested per family. Prizes are needed for this event. Talk to John for more information. |

Items Needed We need items for a garage sale to be held on Labor Day weekend and for future raffles. We are looking for new items or those in excellent condition. This is the perfect use for those presents you never knew what to do with. |
From the President .. The "Civic" is what the members make it. Its not just an organization for the "over 50" crowd. True - involvement on the part of the younger generation has been lacking in the past. Now thanks to the DeDonas, the Carlomustos, the Granvilles and other parents of school age children. the age barrier has been broken. We are happy to have Irene Carlomusto serving as treasurer and hopefully can look forward to more officers from this age group. The civic also addresses the concerns of the members. For those who havent attended meetings, you should be aware that the membership often votes on whether and how to take action on issues. Recently, I spoke at a Town of Oyster Bay board meeting in favor of the Broadway McDonalds drive-through and exit onto Princess Street. This was position was arrived at by membership vote. If those residents in the Princess Street area who were against the Princes Street exit were members, I might have been speaking against McDonalds application instead of for it. We are also not a one issue organization. While concerns about the asphalt plants tend to take a lot of attention, they do not keep us from addressing other business. We are actively involved in Hicksville beautification and revitalization efforts. The board is currently reviewing the plans for a Pier I store at the Broadway Mall and also a car rental application near the train station. The results of such meetings are reported on to the membership and they can establish a civic a position on these applications by vote if appropriate. The NorthWest Civic Association is a democratic organization and actively promotes the quality of life in the community. If you havent attended a meeting please do. You need the civic and it needs you! Dale Bennett |

An "End of Steam" ceremony was held at the Hicksville Station on an overcast October 8, 1955. LIRR Engines 35 and 39 were on hand for the honors and the late William Hayes recorded the event. We believe this is the first time that these photos have been published. | |
