The annual Holiday Party will be held on Monday, December 4 at 7:00 PM at the Burns Avenue School. Note that we will get together one half hour earlier than usual. Newly elected officers will be sworn in at 7 p.m. This should take no more than a few minutes and we are not expecting to conduct any other business.

It’s the holiday season and time to relax and party. Plan on bringing your spouse, the kids and/or grandkids. John Russo is planning the event. A pasta dish, sausage and peppers and a hero will be provided. If you care to bring something, please call John.

Refreshments

Thanks to Anthony & Emily Sorvillo, Millie Jones, John Russo, Jane Grella and Linda Bennett for refreshments at the November meeting. We also appreciate the coffee pot donated by Anthony and Emily.

A Helping Hand for the Holidays

For many years the Civic has given a helping hand to some of our neighbors in need during the Holidays. We are helping two families this year. The membership voted, at the November meeting, to provide gift certificates for food and presents. Donations of money, non-perishable goods and wrapped gifts that are labeled for a child may be brought to the meeting or a drop off can be arranged by calling Millie Jones. We know, from past experience, that we can count on the members to share with those less fortunate.

One family of three consists of two daughters Age 7 (Size 10) and Age 8 (Size 14) and Mom (Size Medium). The other family has two boys Age 10 (Shirt~Lg, 32" Waist) and Age 13 (Shirt XL, 36" Waist) and Mom (Size Medium).

Sharing the Bounty

Thanks to all of the members who contributed food and supplies for the two families that the civic adopted at Thanksgiving. Special thanks go to John Russo who arranged the donation of a turkey for each family and to Millie Jones who coordinated with Nurse Weintraub, stored and then transported the food to the Burns Avenue School.

Special accolades also go to Dolores Sartor. Working with Nurse Weintraub and with Trinity Lutheran Church, where Dolores is a member, she made sure two other needy families in the Northwest enjoyed Thanksgiving. A little birdie told us that she personally donated two turkeys as well as coordinated the collection and delivery of the food.

The annual Tree Lighting Ceremony will be held in Kennedy Park on Friday, December 8 at 7:30 PM. The event is sponsored by the Hicksville-Jericho Rotary and the Hicksville Fire Department. The NW Civic will decorate one of the small trees that surround the large community tree.

On the Mend

Member Bill Sartor recently suffered a mild heart attack. We are happy to report he is on the mend.

Free Eye Exam for Older Diabetics

A major initiative aimed at reducing visual loss among diabetics is being co-sponsored by the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) and the American Optometric Association (AOA), along with the federal health Care Financing Administration. If you’re 65 or older, have diabetes and have not had an eye exam in three years, call the National Eye Care Project Helpline (1-800-222-EYES), 24 hours a day. They’ll put you in touch with an ophthalmologist who – at no cost to you – will provide an eye exam and up to a year of follow-up care for any condition diagnosed at the exam.
