January Meeting The next meeting of the NorthWest Civic Association will be held on Monday, January 8, 2001 at 7:30 PM at the Burns Avenue School. Our guest speaker will be Pat Conway, who coordinates revitalization efforts for the Hicksville Chamber of Commerce. You may recall, as president of that organization, she was the driving force in the renovation of Fountain Park with its attractive plantings and charming clock. She will be discussing plans for redvamping the adjacent Kennedy Park. A proposed landscape plan will be available for members to peruse at the meeting. Following Pats talk, the civic will discuss plans for the new year. What speakers or subjects would you like presented at the monthly meetings? Various fundraisers and member benefits such as the "Night on the Town" raffle, the summer picnic, participation in the Russos Labor Day garage sale and a booster club have been initiated in the last two years. What other service projects and membership benefits should the civic engage in or offer? This is an opportunity for members to suggest new ideas for 2001. Bring your thinking caps and a friend! From the President The NorthWest Civic Association enters the year 2001 as a strong and vital organization that involves its membership in issues and concerns impacting the quality of life of the community. Two active committees ~ Beautification chaired by Linda Bennett and Health and Safety chaired by Greg Yatzyshyn ~ keep us on our toes. There are several areas where we should maintain our vigilance and devote our energies:
Remember that the civic needs you and you need the civic. I wish you all a Happy and Healthy New Year! Dale Bennett Holiday Party Thank You Thanks go to all those who helped make the December Holiday Party a success. John Russo did an outstanding job of planning and catering this merry event. Members provided paper goods, beverages and oodles of scrumptious deserts. Everyone enjoyed the company, food and left with full stomachs and happy hearts. It was wonderful to see so many people ~ young and old and in between ~ enjoying themselves. Beautification Hicksville Agway donated two wreaths which were mounted back to back on our Adopt-A-Spot sign at West John and Wycoff Streets. We hope that they have been enjoyed by all. We have also installed a litter can at the northeast corner of the intersection, complements of the Broadway Mall. Litter pickups will be made by the Town of Oyster Bay. We appreciate the donations from these businesses and trust that the new year will bring continued cooperative efforts between residents, businesses and government to make Hicksville a better place. Illegal Parking The civic membership has expressed their concern over the rash of illegal on and off street parking. Residents are cautioned that overnight parking of commercial vehicles is prohibited on our neighborhood streets. In addition boats, uncoupled trailers and unregistered vehicles may not be left on the street at anytime. We anticipate the ticketing of inappropriate vehicles in our neighborhood in the future. In Sympathy Member Martin Smith passed away in December. Our sympathies are extended to Martins wife, Patricia, and their family. Officers Installed Len Ober, past president of the civic swore in the officers for the upcoming 2001-2003 term at the December meeting. We welcome Anthony Sorvillo to the board as trustee and the return of Greg Yatzyshyn as trustee. We also thank outgoing trustee Linda Bennett for her two terms of service. Winter Storm 2000 Residents of northwest Hicksville, and much of Long Island, woke up to a winter wonderland on Saturday, December 30, 2000. The photo on the left was taken about 7:30 a.m.. This was just the beginning. The snow kept falling until there was an accumulation of 8 to 12 inches. Its likely we will have several snow storms this winter and members are cautioned to pace themselves and not overdo it when shoveling the white stuff. |
