June Meeting

UPCOMING EVENTS

Raffle tickets are still available at $1 each or six for $5.  Chances are available at our meetings.  The drawing will be held at the summer picnic.

The summer picnic will be Sunday, July 23, 12 noon to 4 p.m.  Bring your family and invite a neighbor from the Northwest.  Picnic goers will be able to use the Cantiague Park pool at the resident rate with or without a leisure pass.  There will be drawings and games for the children.  A five dollar donation is suggested per family.  Prizes are needed for this event.  Contact John Russo for more information.

Don't forget we need items for the Labor Day garage sale.  We are looking for new items or those in excellent condition.  This is the perfect use for those presents you never knew what to do with.

Needy Families

It has come to our attention, through the Burns Avenue School, that there are a few families in our area in need of food at times other than the "Holidays." Foods such as peanut butter and jelly, (dry) macaroni or spaghetti and sauce, rice, beans, fruit, cereal, juice and paper goods would be appreciated.  Girls clothing, sizes 10 and 12 is also needed.

Beautification Committee

The beautification committee held a plant sale on May 13 and is pleased to report a total of $112 in receipts.  Thanks to all who made the event a big success including John Russo for the use of his driveway, the Burns Avenue PTA and everyone who donated plant material.  Special thanks to Dolores Sartor and Jane Grella who assisted Dale and me in setting up, sales and cleanup.  We hope the plants thrive and provide their new owners with lots of enjoyment.
Part of the proceeds of the plant sale went to purchasing annuals and perennials for the traffic island on West John Street.  Jane Grella generously donated nine variegated hosta plants from her garden.  Drought tolerant sedums, red and white striped and blue petunias, portulacas, marigolds and daisies were purchased to complete the landscaping.  We're anticipating a dedication of the completed project sometime in late June.

From the President…..

There was an interesting discussion at our April meeting as to how to communicate the unwavering civic position that asphalt plants should not be located next to residences, whether it be our own homes or proposed future housing for seniors.  We do not believe asphalt plants and their associated processes are conducive to the health of anyone living nearby, or to the quiet enjoyment of one's property.  Greg Yatzyshyn reminded us not to get caught up in too much rhetoric - just say "No Asphalt Plants."  We should remember that this is the bottom line concerning this issue.
With warm weather and the asphalt season rapidly descending on us, remember to report asphalt odors promptly to the Nassau County Department of Health at 571-3232 - Mon.-Fri.: 9 am - 4:45 pm.  At other times report problems at 742-6154.  The violations that the health department documents are sent to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and will help in eliminating the asphalt plants from our neighborhood.
