March Meeting

The March meeting of the NorthWest Civic Association will be held on Monday, March 5, 2001 at 7:30 PM at the Burns Avenue School.

Our guest speaker is Glen Cove’s Mayor Tom Suozzi. He will speak on Glen Cove’s revitalization and advise us on identifying and accomplishing goals to help create a better Hicksville.

From the President

The February 5 civic meeting was cancelled due to a snow storm. Representatives of United Vanguard Homes were scheduled to speak on the company’s application for a special use permit from the Town of Oyster Bay to construct and operate a 150-unit assisted living facility in downtown Hicksville. Several board members were able to attend the Hicksville Southwest Civic Association’s meeting the next week to hear and see United Vanguard’s presentation. Officers from five Hicksville civics were at the meeting. Interest in the assisted care facility was expressed, but there was also considerable concern about five stories, possible parking problems and lack of a sufficient park-like setting in the area for residents of the units to enjoy. With only a 1.55 acre plot and 150 units, there would be little space left for a landscaped sanctuary.

As this issue of the newsletter goes to press, several board members will attend the Tuesday, February 27 hearing on the application at Town Hall.

Street Light Out?

If you want to get it fixed, but don’t know who to call, phone 677-5915. This number will get you the unit in the Town of Oyster Bay Department of Public Works that handles street light outages. Call them and they will see that the light gets replaced.
