The next meeting of the NorthWest Civic Association will be held on Monday, October 2 at 7:30 PM at the Burns Avenue School. We’ve scheduled a New York State Assembly candidates forum. All three candidates for the assembly have been invited. Gary Burke, the Democratic Party candidate and Barbara Buonagura, the Liberal Party candidate have accepted. The meeting is open to all interested parties, so feel free to invite a friend.

Summer Picnic

A number of members and neighbors enjoyed the picnic at Cantiague Park on Sunday, July 23. Thanks to John Russo and his family for all of their effort in arranging and catering the picnic. We’ve often said it before, John really knows how to throw a party.

~ Nominations and Elections ~

The civic election will be held at the November meeting. We’re looking for candidates to run for any of the offices. Jo-Ann Broska, Sergeant-at-Arms, is heading the nomination committee. If you’re interested in running for an office, or know someone who is, get in touch with Jo-Ann or a board member. To run for office a candidate must be a member in good standing for 3 months, with the exception of the position of president where the time is increased to 6 months.

Garage Sale

The Civic participated in a garage sale held in John Russo’s driveway over Labor Day weekend. Thanks go to John for hosting the event, all of the members who donated items for the sale and Charlotte Krumm, JoAnn and Fran Broska, Greg and Betty Yatzyshyn, Terri Carson, Ricky Jones and Dale Bennett for staffing the table. Several members stated they had a lot of fun and we raised $134 in the process.

We CAN Do It!

As part of the "We CAN Do It" initiative and in cooperation with the Hicksville Fire Department and the Town of Oyster Bay, the Beautification Committee had a "CANTASTIC" Labor Day weekend. The goal of the project was to recycle cans and bottles generated by the Labor Day Parade and Tournament activities, which are held in Northwest Hicksville. Many thanks go to Town Supervisor Venditto for the use of SORT pails which made collection a much simpler task. We are also very grateful for the help of the Hicksville Fire Department, especially Parade Chairman Dennis Mulligan, for their cooperation in coordinating the event.

Armed with determination and yellow rubber gloves, Dolores Sartor, Jane Grella, Marian McNamara and Dale and Linda Bennett circulated amongst the Labor Day revelers collecting cans and bottles from the SORT pails and participating fire companies. The collected cans were then processed. The tabs were removed and are being delivered to University Hospital and Medical Center in Stony Brook for the Camp for Kids Campaign. The money received from recycling the tabs is used to send underprivileged children with renal disease to camp for two weeks, all expenses paid.

As for the monies generated from recycling the cans, the NorthWest Civic Beautification Committee is putting them to good use funding beautification projects in Hicksville. Mums have been purchased and planted and mulch spread at the Burns Avenue School and on the median strip at Wycoff and West John Streets. The areas surrounding the plantings have been seeded and a new barberry bush replaced one that didn’t make it through the summer. Daffodils and crocus bulbs have also been purchased and they will be planted later in the fall. Members may have noticed that cobblestone edging around the garden in the median strip is now complete. We have received many complementary remarks. It is hoped other civics take note and do likewise in their sections of Hicksville. The recycling project is testimony that when we all work together for the common good "We CAN Do It."
