The summer picnic will be at Cantiague Park, Sunday, July 23rd from 12 noon to 4 PM. We will be located in the picnic area near Parking Field 2. A five dollar donation is suggested per family. Bring friends, neighbors and the kids and enjoy the good food, friendship, games and swimming at the pool. There will be door prizes and of course the drawing for the Night on the Town Raffle. Thanks to the Post Office, Federal Express and others there will be prizes for the children. A special surprise for the kids is planned.

John Russo has our appreciation for all of the time and effort he is putting into planning and running this event. He would like to get an idea how many are attending so please give him a call and tell him the number of people in your party. If you can lend a hand with setting up or cleaning up, please let John know that too.

Where can you get a better deal than this. Bring a chair or two for the adults along with your appetite.

From the President…..

I hope you have all been enjoying the efforts of our Beautification Committee. Dolores Sartor has been picking up papers and cans every Saturday morning at Fountain and Kennedy Parks (and other places too). Meanwhile Jane Grella has been busy picking up papers along the sump across from Agway. Marian McNamara fills a several bags of trash each time she walks up or down West John Street. Linda, Jane and I have been working on the traffic island on the West John Street.

The dry spell has meant less mowing but more watering of the flowers. Unfortunately, we lost a couple of the pigmy barberries that County put in for us, but they will be replaced in the fall. The county furnished all of the woody plants (trees and shrubs) and as reported last month the committee put in the annuals and perennials. Since last month two 30’ sections of Belgian block edgings have been installed with about 50’ to go. Red cedar mulch was added last weekend to spruce up the beds. Two local businesses have pledged garbage cans for the area. The smiles, high signs and complements we get while working on the bed are appreciated.

I’m sorry to mention the asphalt problem in this column two months in a row, but a number of times recently the odor has been unbearable here on Schiller Street. Several members have reported problems with logging their complaints at the Nassau County Health Department at 571-3232. I suggest that if no one answers at this number, that you call the air monitoring section at 571-2339. Give them your odor report and let them know of your problems registering your complaint at the main number.

~ Volunteers Needed ~

Volunteers are needed for Labor Day weekend to help staff our table at the garage sale and to collect recyclable cans on Sunday and Monday at the Fireman’s parade and tournament.

We have the cooperation of both the Hicksville Fire Department and the Town of Oyster Bay to make this possible. The Town is loaning SORT pails for this effort and the Fire Department is letting participatiing departments know about our efforts. Contact Dale or Linda at DBenn@Prodigy.Net if you can help.

R.I.C.H. Gets Richer

Editors Note: This article is by Pat Conway, immediate past president of the Hicksville Chamber of Commerce. It is taken from the first issue of the R.I.C.H. newsletter. R.I.C.H. (Revitalization in the Community of Hicksville) was founded in 1998 by the Chamber, the Hicksville Youth Council and the NorthWest Civic Association.

The Hicksville Chamber of Commerce, one of the partners in the R.I.C.H. Collaboration, has been recently granted funds to make further improvements around town. At the Chamber’s June Membership Meeting, Assemblyman Marc Herbst presented Ella Marie Columbo, Chamber President, with a $20,000 check to be used for the construction of a gazebo in Memorial Park.

There is much to look forward to this fall as the Chamber arranges for colorful banners to be placed on lighting poles to welcome visitors. There will be two styles of banners marking Hicksville as "The Community With Time For You" and two styles of banners that will be up during the holiday season. We thank Senator Michael Balboni for his efforts in making this possible.

Look for new signs (similar to the one now at the park by the fountain) welcoming all to Hicksville as they enter several main streets into our community. The signs will let everyone know that Hicksville was founded in 1648 and that Valentine Hicks, the second president of the Long Island Rail Road, is connected with the name. Watch the local papers for dedication dates for the signs. Assemblyman Marc Herbst has continued to support the efforts of revitalization in Hicksville and we are fortunate to have an elected official that works so hard for us.

Senator Carl Marcellino also assisted the Chamber’s Revitalization Committee with a grant to continue work at Memorial Park. Keep your eyes open for some major improvements in the near future.

Connie Clark, President of the Hicksville Kiwanis Club was awarded a grant that will be used to install a new sprinkler system on the north side of the park. Landscape Designer, Tim Conway has offered his services again to plan the area and Geral Associates will be contributing the planting and labor. Wendy’s donated four new trash receptacles (like the one in front of the Chamber) to place in the park. We’re receiving help from all directions to make this a most beautiful town "center".

Organizations and civics will be contacted by the Chamber’s Revitalization Committee, sometime in early September for a first-hand look at the upcoming plans.

We thank all of the many people who have helped the R.I.C.H. program keep Hicksville beautiful. Your interest makes it easier for us to gain the monetary assistance needed to keep improvements coming.

Mower Needed

We’re looking for a donation of a mower to be used by the Beautification Committee. It doesn’t need to be fancy, but it does need to run. Contact Dale ~ DBenn@Prodigy.Net
