John Carlton Higginbotham was a student at Lynchburg College when the War for Southern Independence began. He entered the CSA as Captain in 1861; promoted Major and Lt. Colonel in 1862, Colonel in 1863 and Brigadier-General, May 1864, being one of the youngest officers of these grades in the service. He was wounded seven times, and at last killed at Spotsylvania Court House, May 10, 1864, while commanding the 25th VA Reg., Jones' Brigade, before his commission as Brigadier-General reached him. |

Cobb, Capt. T. R. Buckner 48th VA - Lt. Col. R. H. Dungan, Maj. Oscar White 50th VA - Lt. Col. L. H. N. Salyer Johnson's Division's action was to the east of Cemetery Hill in the battle for Culp's Hill. |
