Health Issues in Irish Setters...
The Irish Setter Club of America has sponsored studies and surveys on epilepsy, bloat, and other health issues for Irish Setters. I encourage any owner or breeder of a registered Irish Setter with ideopathic epilepsy to participate in the current DNA/pedigree research project being conducted for the Irish Setter Club of America by the University of Missouri. There is also an independent DNA research study of epilepsy in Irish Setter families underway at VetGen. Pedigree information and DNA samples from epileptic Irish Setters and their unaffected family members are needed for both of these projects, so please help if you can. All submissions are confidential. While this research may not be able to directly help your own epilepsy-affected Irish Setter, the information and DNA samples you can provide, may go a long way in helping to determine whether there is a genetic basis to epilepsy, and how best to eradicate this horrible illness from future generations of puppies. Anyone who has had the misfortune of living with a pet with this illness will fully apppreciate the importance of this goal.
