Band Dictionary N-Z
NATURAL - Band music never sounds this way.
NOTES - 1) Dots and lines with flags sometimes attached to them that represent the pitches trying to be attained by a player. 2) Dollar bills of varying denominations. Obviously not possessed by band geeks.
OBBLIGATO - Band community service. e.g. the parade, the graduation, or pep band.
ON TIME - Unacceptable. (see Early)
OVERTURE - Anywhere except over here.
PAGE TURN - good excuse for not playing the hard parts.
PARALLEL MINOR - A student that is as tall as his/her band director.
PIU - What you say when you finish a piece.
PODIUM - Band director's soap box. Stood on to conduct music and/or lecture students.
POMP AND CIRCUMSTANCE - 1) A painful form of torture. 2) Obligation by every band geek for 3 of their years in high school. 3) An extremely useful and effective form of torture for underclassmen.
POMPOSO - A conductor.
POWER CHORD - It plugs into the wall.
PRACTICE ROOM - 1) A place to store extra equipment not being used. 2) A small room into which you may practice without people hearing that you suck, too much. 3) A place where "other" practicing is taking place.
SCHOOL - Place where bandies must attend only because they must rest during marching practices.
STUDENT BODY - Non-bandies who claim they don't give a crap about the band while we bandies know they secretly wish they were one of us.
TEACHERS - School personel other than the band director that fail to understand the commitment of a band geek to a band.
TEMPO - The rate at which mistakes happen in a song. Doubling the tempo, quadruples the number of mistakes.
TRUTH OR DARE - 1) A game that has the potential to mentally scar you for life. 2) A game that is always played on band busses.
TUNE - 1) What the condition is called when all insturments are within a half step of each other. 2) A piece of music.
TUNING - A period in which one insturment holds a note while everyone else in band tries to match the pitch. The following consequences usually result: all clarinets get in tune with each other, but are almost a half step behind the trumpets, who still aren't as sharp as the flutes, and no one even wants to start talking about the piccolo. Meanwhile the trombonists are playing anything and hoping the band director won't notice, the saxes are doing something all on their own, the french horns still don't know what's going on, and no one can hear a damn thing over the percussionists talking.
