Historic Photos ~ Under Construction!
Our first colonel, James Cameron, the brother of the US Secretary of War, Simon Cameron, and unfortunately killed in the first battle of Bull Run.
The gallant regiment that marched in the grand review before the battle of Bull Run was immortalized here by Winslow Homer in the Harper's Weekly newspaper.
Contrary to the caption, William McKnight identifies this chappy as Cpl. James Berry.
This gorgeous recruiting envelope from 1861 unfortunately shows no real components of the 79th's uniform. Gotta love the get-up, though.
Cameron's replacement was the then Colonel Issac Stevens, pictured left after his promotion to Brigader General, and above in a lithograph mourning his death in 1862.
The enlistment poster from Steven's era in 1861.
This fuzzy pic from 1864 was taken at the top of Lookout Mountain. From the date, we know it's not a 79th fellow, but the glengarry shows that Scotch served in more than one regiment!
