In 1846 the Lewis family arrived in La Crosse County. By 1850, four brothers, a sister and their mother, Margaret, had built their homes, a saw mill and a grist mill on the land that would become known as Lewis Valley in the Town of Farmington.
Other families also came to the Lewis Valley to settle. Although some settlers moved west after only brief stays, the majority stayed until their deaths. It was, therefore, necessary to have an area of land set aside for a cemetery.
The first death to occur in the area was that of Margaret Lewis in 1848. She was given a resting spot on a pleasant section of the family land. As other area pioneers lost their loved ones, additional burials were made near her grave and the area grew into what today is Farmington Cemetery.
In November of 1901, the first expansion of the cemetery land was made. Again in 1949, more land was platted for the cemetery. Farmington Cemetery is now the largest cemetery in the township.
It is said if you are leaving through the west gate, which is on a hill, and you put your car in neutral, your car is mysteriously "pushed" up the hill and out of the gate of the Cemetery.
We had a lot of fun investigating at Farmington Cemetery, unfortunatly no possible paranormal phenomena was experienced nor captured durring this investigation. However, we did notice a slight decline on the west enterence/exit of the cemetery. At a glance it is difficult to see due to the surroundings, which may cause folks to think they are actually being pushed out of the cemetery.
Pretty much it's just an optical illusion. |
