"Admiral Benden, sir," said Sean, rider of bronze
Carenath, "may I present the Dragonriders of Pern?"

After eight Passes of Thread, the people of Pern grow lax. Over the past four hundred years, the Weyrs had dwindled until only one remained - Benden. Then, about twenty turns before the start of the Present Pass, disaster struck in the form of an earthquake. The resulting chaos destroyed half of the Weyr, and left the other half unstable for living. Down to less than fifty dragons and only one queen, the survivors move west to inhabit High Reaches Weyr.

The local Holders are disgusted to see dragons in their skies, and tithe only when forced to, and then only the dregs. Dragon population grows but little, although the slowly increasing amount of eggs warns that Thread once again approaches. When Thread appears once more, there is less than a hundred dragons to meet it. Understrengthed and unaware of the time-travelling capabilities of dragons, Pern is attacked again and again. Fields of crops are destroyed in the blink of an eye. Whole herds fall prey to the disasters of Thread. Tithes are given grudgingly out of fear, yet many Holders protest that dragons are doing no good.

In addition to fighting Thread, the dragonriders of High Reaches Weyr find themselves arguing almost constantly with the local Holds. What tithes they get are poor, almost to the point of being inedible. The Holds fare little better, for Thread has been brutal on everything it touches. Crafters find themselves on the short end of the stick, for while they earn money those marks can not buy what is not available for sale. Those people who support dragonriders, and who yearn to be one, are few and far between. New dragonriders come from the Weyrbowl, or occasionally taken from a Hold.

Pern is no longer the perfect place it once was. There is no Lessa or F'lar to safely lead Pern through the Pass. No dragonriders have come from time long ago to help. There is no AIVAS to teach how to forever defeat the Red Planet. There is only High Reaches, and their understrengthed wings.
