April 19th - Arrival,Our guide is to meet us outside the airport holding a sign with our name on it and will transfer us to our hotel. Once check-in is finished, we will be shown where to change money and after our guide will take us to a good restaurant, so that we can catch our breath and take in the fact that we are finally in Kathmandu. The rest of our time will be just walking around Thamel. April 20th -Today is usually a good day for sightseeing. Our guide will meet us at the hotel after breakfast around 9:00 am and will take us to the most famous of the Kathmandu Hindu and Buddhist Monasteries. The most visited are: Kathmandu Durbar Square, Swayambhu Stupa, Bouddhanath Stupa and Pashupatinath. Most of these are World Heritage Sites and are very well preserved by this organization. Another great place to visit is the walled city of Bhaktapur, which is a 20 minute taxi drive from Thamel. Our guide will not be knowledgeable about each place we visit, but there are professional guides that can be hired at each spot to give details and insight. Our guide will set a fair price with the guide for us to pay. April 21st -Today will be the start of our trek. We will take an early morning bus (6:00) to the city of Besisahar. The night will be spent here at one of the many hotels. If we feel like walking some, we can continue out of Besisahar for a short distance until we see a good place. April 22nd- Besisahar to Bahundanda (7 hours) April 23rd - Bahundanda to Chamje (5 hours) April 24th - Chamje to Bagarchap (6 hours) April 25th - Bagarchap to Chame (4.5 hours) April 26th - Chame to Pisang (5 hours) April 27th - Pisang to Manang (low route 4 hours, high route 6.25 hours) April 28th - Rest day in Manang, altitude is 11,614 ft. We need to acclimatize for one day. It is dangerous to continue on unless you are free from any symptoms of altitude sickness. We will stay here until there are no symptoms of altitude sickness. There is a good health clinic in Manang with helpful information about altitude sickness, along with news about the coming Thorung La (pass) which we will reach 2-3 days. April 30th - Gunsang to Yak Kharka (13,055 ft) 3 hours. Once again this will be another short day. But the walk will be getting interesting as we start to get a glimpse of the pass to come. May 1st - Yak Kharka to Thorung Phedi (14,596 ft) 4 hours. It is important to ask about using the trail across the river. This trail isn't always open because of rock fall and landslides. If in doubt.we will use the trail that stays on the right hand side of the river and beware of snow and ice on the lower part of this trail before crossing the river to the lodges located at the bottom of this pass. May 2nd - Thorung Phedi (14,596 ft) and over Thorung La (17,769 ft) to Muktinath (12, 467 ft). If we have any symptons of altitude sickness or if the weather is not good, we can't go on. If all is well, we must start climbing this pass around 5:30 am to have plenty of time to reach Muktinath before dark. Once we reach the summit a small teahouse is located there. We will then go down to Muktinath. On this day we will have a 2,000 foot altitude gain on the way over the pass and 5,000 foot descend of altitude on the way down the other side. |
