17 June 2002 Babler State Park Near St. Louis MO We've been here since Thursday, and Babler is the nicest state park we've stayed at. All the RV sites are level and paved, which is a relief after some of the campgrounds we've been at. When I was growing up in St. Louis, Babler was considered to be 'way out' in the country - now the west county suburbs border it. It is absolutely mind-blowing to come back to the city of your birth and barely recognize it. |
We've gotten our Verizon situation sorted out now, and have two new cell phones, and wireless internet access. Yay! For the last six weeks, we've had to depend on the public libraries for our internet fix. Now we can plug the laptop into the cell phone and get access anywhere (there's digital service, that is). The unlimited night and weekend minutes tipped the balance for us, and I love the fact that I can text message and get email on my wireless phone! Too cool! After a little more R&R, and taking care of business here in the big city, we'll be heading back to Farmington to refit for our new big trip. It's definitely getting too hot in Missouri; it's time to head north and west, and we'll be getting ready to follow the Lewis and Clark trail in July. |
30 June 2002 Home Base Farmington MO We've been back at home base for a week, catching up with mail and working the bugs out of our wireless internet setup. Despite all our maps and guidebooks, we still managed to get lost and had to turn around the rig a number of times. We decided that a GPS unit is the answer to our problems and will help avoid disagreements over who ordered that wrong turn that took us 5 miles out of the way before we could turn around. This way we can get mad at the GPS instead of each other. Our other major purchase will probably be a super-quiet generator, so that we can do more bookdocking. We've also decided to go on the Caveman Diet (AKA Atkins Diet). Wish us luck! We'll probably be departing northwards soon after the 4th. |

5 July 2002 Farmington MO We went to the fireworks display at the water park last night. It wasn't exactly Boston harbor, but pretty good for a small town. We've also been doing a little exploring close to home. We checked out St. Joe State Park, which is a couple of miles from Farmington, and discovered that it's a haven for ATV's. Surprisingly, a flock of deer coexist with the noisy machines - we saw half a dozen fawns grazing over the sand dunes, totally unafraid. I don't think we'll be staying there, all the same. The weather here is unbelievably hot and humid -- at least there's no smog! |
Sign in Farmington - Look busy! Just after we took this picture, the sign mysteriously disappeared! |
I saw one of these right next to a Coke machine--you gotta be careful where you put your quarters in a small town. Never assume! |
