We Proceeded On...
Part II:  The Journey West

We woke up to 2” of snow on the ground this morning – it was so beautiful, and not a total surprise since temperatures in the 20’s had been predicted.  We’ve seen snow on the mountaintops, but that’s about 2000-3000 ft. above where we are.  I felt a little sorry for the tent campers, but it turns out they’re bow hunters, so supposedly, they know how to handle themselves in the woods.  If you’re not prepared for a change in the weather, I guess you shouldn’t go up in the mountains at all (not out of season anyway).  The weather can change so fast.

We took great pride in having our home office up and running at 9100 ft. – computer, printer and fax/copier!  I busied myself making a mount for the GPS unit out of polymer clay, something I’ve been meaning to do for ages.  John installed the two new batteries, so we are in business.

We are thinking of heading out for Montana early next week, before winter shuts us down in the north country.

The weather was glorious yesterday, and after doing some errands in Buffalo, we took a drive down Crazy Woman Canyon.  The gravel road gave our 4WD a bit of a workout, but nothing it couldn’t handle.  The road runs along  Crazy Woman Creek, with woods and canyons on either side.  My wish to see a moose was realized – actually, two moose (mooses?) – a mother and baby.  There are wonderful places to camp along this road, where you can hear the creek and enjoy the canyon views.

We have decided to replace our RV battery with two, more powerful ones, run in parallel.  This will allow us to make it through the night without being waked up by the ‘low battery’ alarm at 3 a.m.  Our current battery is not holding a charge as it should.  The new setup should insure that we have enough power.

We have been wondering about some tent campers in this campground who set up a giant white army-style tent with a pipe sticking up out of it.  We now think that they must be Forest Service, since John saw one of them doctoring a tree this morning.  They have a huge propane tank, so we’re thinking they must have a propane stove in there to keep warm.

We experienced another snowfall in the Bighorns and decided maybe it was time to leave (especially since we don't have chains on the tires.)  We spent last night in Tensleep, and are on the road to Great Falls, Montana.  BTW, those tent campers we thought were Forest Service - they were bowhunters.  None of them got a deer that I know of (hooray!) although a doe and her fawn walked right through camp one day.  One of the first sights we saw in the national forest was a dead doe hanging from a tree - ugh!
