We are finally here, in east central Colorado, ensconced in what may turn out to be our base camp for the next few weeks.  I hope so, because we are both exhausted from the constant breaking and setting up camp.  Haven’t seen much yet, but our internet setup works and John is firing up the satellite dish, so life is good.

Dodge City KS

We arrived here last night, after sitting two days in Halstead KS waiting to get our RV fixed.  Lucky for us, though, there was a welder living in the trailer park who agreed to bring his tools to the site and do the work there – much easier for us than having it towed heck knows where.  We’re not sure whether the repair in KC actually caused this problem but it is an odd coincidence.

We visited the remains of the Santa Fe trail, just west of Dodge, this afternoon.  Thousands of covered wagons, traveling 4 abreast, created deep depressions in the land, which can still be seen today in places such as this where they have been preserved.  It’s always windy up on these high plains – they say that the wind drove some of the settlers mad – but on a hot day like today, it was refreshing.  John & I have remarked on the fact that western Kansas has little or no shade, so the wind is very welcome!

If you focus your vision between US-50 on the left and the fenceline of the nearest farm on the right, and use your imagination, you can almost believe that you’re looking upon a limitless shortgrass prairie, lonely and beautiful.

We have been exploring around Canon City, and have found a beautiful valley that has real possibilities for relocation.  It's high - around 8000 ft. - a broad green valley with a mountain range on each side.  Truly gorgeous - and the people who live there appear to be committed to keeping it that way.  How refreshing!  It's the Wet Mountain Valley, and I will post some pictures as soon as I can.

I am updating the web page at the Canon City Library, and it is very noisy and full of kids let out of the summer reading program, so this will be short.
