3 June 2002 Woodsmoke Campground Unicoi TN We have been here for nearly a week visiting my old friend Norma Myers, who works at the Archives of Appalachia in Johnson City TN. The campground is probably the nicest we've stayed at on the whole trip -- terraced sites nestled amongest piney woods and a creek. The family who run the camground have owned the land for some 40 years, and when they bought it, it had just been clearcut. You'd never know it today--well, it HAS been 40 years. But they've worked hard to bring back native plants and to heal the environment. It's not very far off the highway, but you'd think that you were way back in the woods. The guidebook said it was supposed to have phone hookups, but turns out that's just for long-term campers. We've seen RVers doing some strange things on this trip--one of the strangest was watching a guy MOW his site! He travels with a non-motorized old push mower. I sold my house and went on the road so I wouldn't HAVE to mow lawns! I also loved the lady who brought along her potted plant and set it outside next to the wire enclosure for her dogs, next to the lava lamp! We've done a lot of exploring of the hill country around here. Check out the pictures on this page. |

And, of course, every few miles, John must stop and check the hitch (perfectionist that he is!) |
