AUDITION TIPS

(Thanks to my jazz teacher Robin again for great tips!)

Know the facts: Where, when, what?  If you can, talk to someone who has been through this audition before.  Get any information you can.  The more you know, the more prepared you can be.

Arrive early: Avoid being late at all costs!  You never know when there might be traffic or have trouble finding the address.  Not only does being early make a good impression on the judges, it also gives you time to warm up and prepare yourself.

Take care of your body: Avoid sugar and caffiene in the hours before the audition- it might make you hyper and nervous.  Eat a well balanced meal for lots of energy- but don't eat to much because it will slow you down.  Protien(peanut butter, milk, etc.) will stay with you longer and you should eat it about an hour before your audition.  It's always a good idea to bring something with carohydrates(like a granola bar) with you to eat before for extra energy.  And as always, drink lots of water!  Get rest the night before, but don't change your sleeping habits so much that you can't get any rest.  If it's a morning audition, wake up a fewa hours before so you can get your mind and body going.

Appearance: Auditions are based on first impressions.  Make it a good one!  Dress neatly.  If you can wear a tank top, make sure you wear a one-piece leotard underneath.  Bare stomachs are distracting.  Also, make sure your hair is securely pulled back.  If you are constantly fixing your hair and outfit you will make a bad impression.  Bright colors are great- they make you stand out and be noticed, but try and make them solid, designs are to busy.  Basic is good!

Be alert: Don't be afraid to ask questions!  This will help you understand what you are expected of and it will show your willingness to learn.

Confidence and Enthusiasm: I can not stress the importance of these two things!  Make eye contact with the judges! Smile at them, show them that you are focused, determined, and glad to be there.  Be calm- even if you have no clue what you are oding!  Alot of times the judges don't know the combination either, but they are looking for people who believe in themselves and are comfortable with new situations.  If you make a mistake, it's okay.  We are al human!  The judges are not expecting you to be perfect. They assume that you'll make mistakes.  what they want is to know how you will react to them.

Have fun!: Whether you make it or not, realize your accomplishments.  Make the audition process a learning experience.  The more you allow yourself to enjoy the process, the more calm you'll be and the better you'll do.  Make the most out of your exoeriences, yo might miss them someday.
