Gorilla's Of Cameroon
Conservation of one endangered species population has led to the discovery of another after field researchers from San Diego Zoo's Center for Reproduction of Endangered Species (CRES) and WWF discovered a population of gorillas in a region where they had never been seen before. While tracking drills through the Ebo forest in Cameroon, the team uncovered evidence - including nest sites, dung and a skull - indicating gorillas were present. They have since seen a silverback, some females and young, but the size and distribution of the population remain a mystery.
"Nowadays, it is very unusual to discover new populations of great apes," said CRES director Dr Alan Dixson. "It brings new hope to gorilla conservation to see a troop living virtually undisturbed." Indeed, with so many primate populations throughout Africa in tremendous peril due to human encroachment, the bushmeat trade and, most recently, the Ebola virus epidemic, this discovery is very good news. The Ebo forest is in good shape right now, but loggers have shown an interest in it for the future.
