Govalkot has a prominent Adilshahi and Peshwa fort or Qila which gives a unique aspect to the scene. The village is inhabited by a variety of well known families such as Chogle or Chowghules, Mukaddam (Kolthakars/Hajwane) and Gothe, Ghare, Khatib, Karandikars, Burte,Begg,Parbhulkar,Surve,Pathan, Kuppe,Morey,Parkar, Parbhakar,Dhawan, Kelkar, Pardesi, Mayer, Arkate, Wangde, Nakhuda, Surve, Alware,Patel etc etc. Apart from being an agricultural location, other activities included weaving and tanning. The village also boasted small fishing industries which have unfortunately diminished in scale and importance in recent years. There has been a long-standing tradition of other domestic cooperative activites which included the making of Vermichelli or Senw, Sandge and Papad. Unfortunately, due to ready-made consumer goods revolution, such activities are seen to be dissapearing rapidly. |
