I have had a wee bit of a History with Honda's in my family. My father
has always been one to buy small and cheap to run cars to get to and
from his work, And it so happened that he bought about 3 of them in his
time. The latest one I still have, though in need of quite some work!!
Dad had a period where he was quite ill , and his 600 was left at
his work, so this was the first time I had taken the time to drive one.
It stayed our house for a few weeks, I used to get to and from work and
the odd trip into town, it had a terrible leaky exhaust, which the
fumes came into the cabin and almost gassed ya!!! :o)
The a couple of weeks later it died... No reason, and nothing could be found, though we had no idea what to look for.
It ended up sitting outside, then into a barn, then back at home again.
I was unsure what to do with it. So thought I would put an add in the
local buy sell exchange paper for Honda parts, to see if I could gather
some parts to maybe fix this wee thing up. My first add, I got a phone
call from a guy that had a N600. He was wanting $400.00 for it, I
offered $300.00 cash and towed it home that day, gee they drive nice
and quiet without the engine going!!!!
I got it home, and this new one was in better condition rust wise, so decided to persevere with this.
What was found, was that the reason that the initial 600 had failed was
due to a failure with the carb, so off the road it had been for so many
years for such a small thing.
Never mind these things happen. I used some of the parts from
the car to get this new one up and runnig, within a week I had it on
the road and using it for work, It was painted primer greay, and in
fact still is. One day it will be painted, but who knows when that will, anyone with the answer is invited to make contact with me!!!!
I have had the odd trouble
with the machine, The first time I toook it for a Warrent of Fitness
(W.O.F) I got to the station and while waiting in line for the test,
the guy jumped in to take the car into another test lane, and put her
in reverse, and that is where the gearbox stayed, in reverese. So this
was the first time that I had removed an engine and pulled one apart to
find and fix the problem, a sure fire experience and a half. I
put another spare engine in in it's place while doing work on it, that
one worked just fine. One time I was cruising very
fast down the road and the motorcycle carb that I had hooked up, came
apart internally and got jammed, I mean like real jammed up and wide
open, the car went nuts, took the foot of the clutch and the motoer
went wild, A huge puff!!! of blue smoke from the rear and I knoew this
was not good. The only thing to do was to turn off the key and shut her down. Out came the tool kit roadside
and put the bitsx inside the carb back into there rightful places. It
still ran for a while after that.
Later the rings failed and where broken into a number of bits on each piston. Had those repaired along with a cylinder hone and new head gasket. Again the engine was going sweet.
Then the coil failed, tried a
couple from a motorcycle store, that worked for a little while, then
went bad. So I thought about what else I could do, so I wired in two 12
volt coils together, one per cyclinder and that fixed that, And is
still runs fine like this, the only down side is that the points pit a
little quicker, but the spark is sure fat!!!
The clutch went wild one time and broke, that was not to much fun.
At this time the car is in good condition and part the way through restoration, with a little way to go.
Hopefully I will get myself into gear and get this baby painted and on the road again.
